I'm working on a Mega Dragonite knight costume for Halloween.
Starting with someone else's knight helmet pattern, I tried customizing the visor to look like Dragonite's mouth. But I think I'm rustier than I thought at pattern-making 😅

I just had another idea for an easy to use, con-safe locking mechanism for the transformable gunblade. Quick test (I love having so many different small parts available, springs this time) looks promising. I need to get my 3D printer ready again, this idea involves some parts that need to withstand a lot of force and are non-trivial to manufacture, so I'd rather not experiment with my wooden parts for tests.

Lightning, you do realize that strap can be adjusted, right? There's a buckle there that is meant for that. You don't have to carry your weapon like a bassist.

Unedited and I want to experiment more, since I enjoy studying the effects of different lighting, but here's a snippet of a photo I like. This is from the series taken in direct sunlight. I like the amount of detail it captures, even though you can also see all my flaws in the paint job. Ah well. Gotta stop somewhere.

I was scared I might get bored, overwhelmed or annoyed by making 6 pockets for the runner bag, but today I remembered that repeating things justifies automating things, making templates etc and THAT I enjoy a lot. So now I made a template for where the velcro straps should go and wow that was a good idea, I just measured once and now I can hold it, follow the cardboard cutout edges with a magic pen, pin velcro and immediately sew it on. That's 1x measuring, 11x copying.

Oh no, I just had a new idea for a locking mechanism for the transformable gunblade. (Or rather: Hell yeah, I just had a new idea for a gunblade locking mechanism?)
...this must be how it went for the guy who spent 11 years on his gunblade and still does not call it done.

Progress! Four of six small pockets for the runner bag are prepared (cut, folded and top-stitched for edge stiffness). Will cut the remaining two tonight and make a pattern for the lids. Still unsure what material to use for the lids though, also, the largest part of the work besides planning is still left, as all remaining seams need to be done by hand. This will go with the Faith Connors cosplay.

Prepared 2/6 outer pockets for the runner bag. As always with #sewing, it took 3x the time I estimated. I only got half the seams straight and dimensions vary by up to 3 mm, but that also means I at least got half the seams straight and everything is accurate enough to actually fit. Most importantly though, I'm enjoying the process. The sewing pattern (huge term for something so simple) I use now is the 3rd or 4th iteration, but it works really well and I like the material.

I'm making the small bags that go on the outside of Faith's runner bag from a sheet of truck tarpaulin that I looted from the inside of the original bag which is entirely made from truck tarpaulin. Took me half a dozen paper prototypes and help from @brezeldrache until I figured out the geometry in my brain, but now it's satisfying to cut the sheet, construct all the lines and sew. And apparently my track clamp works well to create sharp kinks / edges in this stiff material.

I figured out something new with the gunblade: I don't actually need the safety pins to be metal nails. A piece of ABS filament is enough. It's not as stiff, but it prevents the thing from falling apart or out of position, at least in sword form. Hmm. I will think about this. Maybe this opens up new options so I can have a more elegant lock after all. (Either way, this is good, because nails are usually forbidden at cons.)

The gamepad is charging for Lightning Returns later, the 3D printer is printing a part for the portal gun and I am making a paper mock-up for Faith's runner bag because I have exactly the amount of material I need which is nice because no leftovers of weird plastic material but also stressful because all mistakes will be visible.

I printed the first part for the Portal Gun yesterday! I used the 1 mm nozzle because speeeed and it looks surprisingly good. There are two spots with random holes in the print though. Both are where Cura wanted to place the z seam, so I guess that's related. r/fixMyPrint had no idea so far, so today I am experimenting with z seam placement. I'll just cover the holes with tape and paint though. No need to waste 60 grams of PLA to fix a minor defect on the inside.

There's an (unofficial) aftermovie for Crafting Com, the convention with focus on actually working on cosplays and props. While it does not proportionally represent how I spent my time there, it does give a good overview. It also showed me something I didn't immediately realize: I cared about the people there. I recognized a couple people I talked to or worked with. It was lovely to meet so many people all sharing the same spirit. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pKqZvIuIMjA

Disassembled the runner bag and made a paper template / prototype for the outer pockets. Searched my stuff for matching buckles and materials for the pocket lids. Satisfying results! Sewing and photos tomorrow.
I also analyzed the swing bag, which is Faith's main bag (the runner bag is more like a quest item). I have matching straps, zippers and buckles already and will make a template for the pockets later just like I did for the runner bag. Good progress :)

Researching Rikku cosplayers, boot covers, materials, thinking about replaying FFX...
Meanwhile my brain: Ok but you could use repulsing magnets to have the parts of Fragile's navigator actually levitate
#cosplay #propMaking -
I thought it might be funny to put a not-AirTag in Faith's runner bag since these bags are kinda trackable in-game.
1. Apple's system has cm precision nearby tracking.
2. Android's system doesn't have that.
3. There are much less tags for Android and they are more expensive.
4. I have an Android phone.
5. Not sure about the "show yourself" sounds. The runner bags have a constantly repated sound in Catalyst.Might build something myself instead.
#cosplay #propMaking #MirrorsEdge -
Painting over an unwanted logo and planning pockets for Faith's runner bag. I got lucky and got a used, very robust yellow bicycle / swing bag that I think fits the setting really well. The runner bags in OG Mirror's Edge are more like hardshell briefcases, but I think in Catalyst they've introduced more variability in those bags and there is also an official merchandise bag that looks similar to mine. I hope I have enough of the fabric for the pockets.
#cosplay #MirrorsEdge #propMaking #sewing -
Looking at my umbrella, I fear umbrellas might actually be fairly complex. That's quite a few joints and movable thin metal parts there. Good thing Fragile's navigator just uses magic to have all the parts floating! Who needs joints!

Finding the right angle for the elevated part of the MagRope bracer and adjusting the lengths of the three segments. Faith seems to have super long arms in some of the artwork but actually, her proportions are very similar to mine (just that I am taller overall), so the close-up concept drawings of the MagRope where just part of the arm is visible are probably a bit off.
#cosplay #propMaking #MirrorsEdge -
You have Cloudflare problems, I have half-baked salt dough which has the consistency of marzipan, which is super satisfying to cut. So... more experiments! I have settled on a design for Faith's MagRope, mostly a mix of two concept art versions, so I'm now trying to actually create the shape I want.
#cosplay #propMaking #MirrorsEdge -
I wrote a new blog post! If you like overly detailed descriptions of very specific problems in building an unnecessarily accurate prop for a cosplay, this is for you. Here's how I came up with my design for the base for my transformable version of Lightning's gunblade from Final Fantasy XIII. https://bikanel.de/gunblade-build-the-base
#blog #cosplay #propMaking #FinalFantasy #woodworking -
I may have accidentally baked salt dough with a heat gun... but I have also successfully tested forming Worbla with salt dough. For curvy, not too steep shapes, just placing the Worbla on the shaped dough and heating it is sufficient, the Worbla will kind of melt into position. For sharper shapes, I'll probably bake the salt dough intentionally, so I can press the Worbla onto it. The dough is very soft. (I used 2 volumetric parts wheat flour, 1 salt and 1 water.)
#cosplay #crafting #propMaking -
A fully retractable light up replica light saber prop. Well done.
-
Diving further into the construction of Faith's MagRope, figuring out joints and comparing artwork to figure out what's complex and what is simply fake. So far, the arm attachment does seem to make sense physically.
I love this phase of every project, be it coming with an own mechanism or analyzing another one. I'm jumping between projects heavily lately, but who cares, it's my free time and I'm making loads of progress overall.
#cosplay #propMaking #MirrorsEdge -
So I got an almost full sheet of Black Worbla... that's almost exactly the size of my workbench. I also have a tripod that can extend above my head (and I am TALL). Looks like I still should use my 18 mm lens instead of the 28 mm one, the f1.8 does me no good here anyway. Also, I guess I should prop up the gunblade at an angle, you can barely see the details I added last. Might use my EVA foam roll as backdrop lol
#cosplay #propMaking #photography -
DONE! Damn, this was a LONG FUN project. What started as "yeah, I could build this thing" turned into a whole new crazy hobby, teaching myself a couple of new skills, entering what feels like a whole new universe. As is expected with a project I already spent 2.5 years on, there are more things I would have liked to do but couldn't, but I am super proud of: Lightning's gunblade from Final Fantasy XIII, transformable without parts that are not original.
#cosplay #propMaking #FinalFantasy #FFXIII -
omg this cost me a lot more nerves than I would like, mostly because the official software for the laser unit on Creality 3D printers is so bad. It was also obviously a bit of work to partly disassemble the blade and position it inside the 3D printer frame so that the laser could work and nothing would move or crash into the frame. Now as soon as my neighbors will tolerate it I will vacuum the ash out and paint and re-assemble it to new glory!

Oh look the gunblade is about one WildRikku* thigh big. Didn't expect it to fit, I just wanted to try if it slides in easily (yes). Maybe I don't even need to open the leg. Balance might be tricky though, it needs to tilt towards the tip, but in gun form, it tends to tilt towards the hilt.
