Oh! I love this! In most fiction carrier pigeons get treated like they fly anywhere on command. IRL they're one way birds; they return to their nest from anywhere you release them - that they carry a message is a minor detail for them. This character is using a whistle to call in the messenger bird, and it doesn't look like a dove once it arrives. Not a perfect improvment, but better than a lot of others.

Do I need that big shelving/storage thingy in the background? No. Do I crave it? Yes! I mean; _look at it_! It's elegantly made! It has a cupboard! It has little compartments for trinkets, and larger shelves for thingamabobs! It may even have potted plants! What's not to like???

Dang it! I keep getting distracted during this scene by automatically converting li to kilometers and then into Swedish miles! 😅 (The reason being I understand vastness through Swedish miles.) For anyone who want to try; 1 li ~0.5km, 1 Swedish mile = 10km.

When I was in Beijing 1998 I learned that the price of one perfect round pearl the size of a pea, was 400 yuan. Given the evenness and shapes of the pearls on the princess' collar we shouldn't even calculate. I don't think we can afford the answer. It's magnificent though.

Yes! I caught it on picture! This season has levelled up the fight choreography too, not just in flow but in creative weird tricks. Here Lu Lingfeng has just made a master archer turn his bow backwards and shoot. I'm not sure if the script gave the choreographer a headache, but they really pulled it off!

On one hand: this woman is a walking internet popup ad. OTH it's weirdly refreshing to see a kinda' stereotypical dealmaking ~middle age woman who isn't a matchmaker, she is _actually_ in business. She may not be successful (the scene is set up that way), but at least she isn't cordoned off to the narrow field of marriage.

It feels like the franchise Strange Tales of Tang Dynasty has found its ~form with s3. The moments my inner editor finds cloddy are few to non-existant*, and there are a lot of scenes where the actors seem to be really enjoying their work. This is cosy crime on so many levels!
(*I don't think I've ever seen a drama where my inner editor has been silent, so this is high praise)

Aaaand Strange Tales of Tang Dynasty is finally back at being the potted plants drama - mystery 4 (5?) is set at a florist. Do you remember that this is set at the same time as the beginning of the Viking Age in Europe? Imagine a couple of vikings walking in and go

I wonder how much it registers that one of the women is not like the others? Ms Red Skirt has a different profile - she's wearing the classical Tang dress with the "belt" hanging on the breasts, while the others have marked waists - more makeup, and a large hairdo. She's not alone in wearing complementary colors, but hers are harsher.
She may be a red herring (ahaha) or the slut that sold them out. Only time will tell.

To be precise about scaly creatures in Strange Tales of Tang Dynasty there are earlier encounters than ep20, though they are so brief they didn't register on my squickdar. If your reaction is strong you may want to skip the entire mystery 3 since it has snakes in its sub-vignette, and the emperor dreams about them around ep18. The big vignette also hints at scaly stuff - apparently this production löööööves them.

It wouldn't be a season of Strange Tales of Tang Dynasty if it didn't include at least one episode with a scaly creature, ie lizard, snake etc. If that's your squick or trigger season 3 has its first appearance in ep 20. It's mentioned throughout, and is on screen at ~18min ff. The pic is of Su Wuming fighting one of them.

There are at least two wall hangers with pockets in this home. Both are used for storing books (ie the Chinese scroll kind), maybe also sorting them. Apart for giving me even more DIY ideas, I kinda' wonder how historically correct they are. This production has a rather high base line for this, so I assume there was a Tang equivalent, but I want to see the documentation... _for fun_.

The costume designars have upped their game for this season! One can discuss how that was possible since they've always been precise in recreating Tang style clothes - and the fabric patterns have been *chef's kiss* awesome! But it's not just the magnificent Princess hanfu here - take a look at the prints on the shawls the palace mades are wearing.

Good looking fella'! That's why I remember his looks*. But he's either extremely typecast or really enjoys playing villains, because every time I see him his character has a streak of sleazyness. Much like Sean Bean he's a walking spoiler.

AFAIK this actor doesn't have idol status, but I've seen him in several dramas in _wildly_ different roles. He was the super smart eunuch in The Ming Detective, the extremely stupid crownprince in Back From The Brink, and a normal servant in The Ancient Detective. But I think this role may be his most challenging to date; he plays at least four out 19 weird brothers (potentially all of them).

Strange Tales Of Tang Dynasty is still at it! Historical accuracy, that is. I'm not familiar with Tang food handling, but I _have_ read Apicius*, and this is roughly what he'd recommend for transporting sensitive fruit like peaches. They're put in terracotta shells glued together with a clay slurry and secured with string. The porous shell lets the fruit breathe and keeps them from getting bumps that can start rotting.

Wasn't feeling super well today and took wellness leave, which is just as well, because I spent half the day nursing a bad headache 🥴. If I had pushed through work, I wouldn't produce much and would prob be worse off.
Anyway I spent the day doing what semi sick people do: Bingeing on TV. Namely #StrangeTalesOfTangDynasty 2. I am at the final arc/mystery and am so sad. This is a GREAT #cdrama, even better than s1. The arcs in Yunding were so good! And so cool they filmed in real locations. -

All those years in the SCA when we combed through the internet globally, local fabric shops, and IKEA - yes _IKEA_ - for natural fibres and weave or print patterns that at least ressembled Medieval cloth...
...and here are C-drama costume designers seemingly sleepwalking into the right stuff All. The. Time.
(His shirt is probably POD printed, but the fabric of the coat is either from commercial cloth or made by traditional block printing.)

Bless Lu Lingfeng, he can be a huge träbock, and it's making this scene _painful_ to watch.
Träbock: while it translates to "wood ram" it has nothing to do with bed chambers. It's a Swedish term for stickler for rules. Can be used mildly derogatory, ie. the bus driver who denies you a ride because the fare is 6 and you only have 5.99 is a träbock. But it can also be used for aimiable people who Just Don't Notice the girl is into them.
