  1. If #MobyDick has taught me anything, it's that #sailors are #gay, #GayMarriage was always legal under #MaritimeLaw, and whaling ships are just big gay orgies, and that's why they don't want women there to tempt them into being straight.

This is simply a straightforward reading of the text. If you don't like it, maybe you don't like classic #American #Literature. 🇺🇸 📖 🫡

  6. A sea-monster movie borrowing the aesthetic of whaling epics inevitably sails into the shadow of Moby-Dick. The spectacle is fun, but the ideas feel smaller than the ocean they’re trying to cross. Big ships, bigger beasts… but the biggest stories are the ones with ideas deep enough to match the water.

  7. Well, I'm battened down as much as I can be, and since I'm flying solo this weekend, I might as well take advantage of the fireplace and settle into this week's book club reading.

  8. #Movies . . .

A good movie that I missed when it was released but just watched on #Prime Video.

    #InTheHeartOfTheOcean (2015) is directed by #RonHoward, who's filmography of films he has directed is almost as substantial as #Spielberg's with #Splash, #Cocoon, #GungHo, #Backdraft, #ThePaper, #Apollo13, #TheMissing, #CinderellaMan, the #DaVinci Code Trillogy,
#13Lives & this movie(among others) to his credit.

Heart of the Ocean is a prequel to #MobyDick in which #HermanMelville is told the reportedly true story of the whaling ship Essex which sank when attacked by a whale, which he uses to write his book.

    #ChrisHelmsworth stars in the movie & #CillianMurphy & #BrendanGleeson play supporting roles.

It's an excellent cast & a very good movie which I'd rate a 7 out of 10, even though it only was moderately successful financially & only given luke warm rating elsewhere.

  9. I've unwordled for the moment. My recent casual puzzle games have been basic nonograms (puzzle-nonograms.com), of which the 15x15 grid sort of hits the sweet spot for me -- not too long and drawn out, not too short and easy, and at night, for getting to sleep porpoises, OMBY (counterwavegames.com/omby), an app game in which portions of paragraphs of Moby Dick are scrambled so that if you finish the entire game, you will have solved over 10,000 puzzles, and read the whole book. I'm on around number 700, atm, so. A bit to go. Of course, I read Moby Dick years ago, but reading it in nanobites like this hits different. For one thing, I realize I've forgotten basically the whole beginning of the book, and for another, I didn't really remember how *gothic* it is (Ishmael has just spent a rather inordinate amount of time and purple prose contemplating The Dead). But humorous, too. For all your gothic humor needs in tiny cetacean gulps. 🐳
