  1. #Libertarians Took Control of This Small Town in #NewHampshire. It Didn’t End Well.

A new book shows the troubling consequences of #GraftonNH’s anti-government experiment.

"Today, we are all living in Grafton. Armies of rabid bears are wandering through our streets, clawing at our window screens, and gnashing their teeth at our children while the phone rings unanswered at the state department of fish and game. The old village church is erupting in flames, but someone has slashed the tires on our town’s lone fire truck, and the fire hydrants—unmaintained for a decade—have all run dry. Terrified, we beg our neighbors for help, only to be told that the Lord will protect us, or that the cataclysm in the streets is just punishment for our moral failures or our political misdeeds."

Excerpt: "Certainly, the author is not alone in finding cause for amusement in Grafton’s funny little basket of deplorables. For years now, reporters and pundits have chosen to focus on the style, rather than the policy substance, of the growing #LibertarianRight. Again and again, we read stories of rural rubes clad head to toe in #MAGA swag, hunched over chipped cutlery in dingy diners, wielding biscuits to wipe the last of the sausage gravy from their oversized plates while vociferously proclaiming that taxation is theft and inveighing against the nanny state. In choosing to shoot these red, white, and blue fish in a barrel, Hongoltz-Hetling is in very good company.

"But had the author not chosen snark over substance, his book could have served as a peculiarly timely cautionary tale, because the conflicting philosophical principles that drive this story are central to understanding American politics today. The differences between the libertarian stumblebums who moved to Grafton and the staff of the #Koch-funded #CatoInstitute are mostly sartorial. And the sad outcomes of Grafton’s wacky social experiment are now being repeated in American communities every single day. "

With #NeoNazi rally in #ConcordNH, #extremism and #hate are on the rise in #NewHampshire

The demonstration in Concord was the group’s largest in almost a year. They’ve also rallied elsewhere, in places like Florida and Ohio.

The following year, Pohlhaus worked to build a #BloodTribe basecamp near the rural town of #SpringfieldME. He has since sold the land and moved away."

  4. Proposed #ICE facility in #NewHampshire won’t be built, governor says

The plan for a 500-bed processing center had drawn pushback from local and state officials.

by Drew Johnson, February 24, 2026

The Department of Homeland Security will not move forward with its plan to convert a warehouse in Merrimack, New Hampshire, into a 500-bed U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility, Gov. Kelly Ayotte announced Tuesday.

The proposal had drawn pushback from local and state officials in New Hampshire, while its proximity to Maine also generated rumors that it would be used to hold people detained here."

  7. #VisuallyImpaired #voters sue #NewHampshire over changes to #Absentee #BallotAccess

The plaintiffs say the new law will deter some voters with #disabilities from participating in the democratic process at all, even after they have registered to vote

By Steven Porter Globe Staff, Updated August 21, 2025, 9:30 a.m.

"Three people with visual impairments are suing New Hampshire officials to challenge the constitutionality of a law that will soon tighten #PhotoID requirements for voters seeking an #AbsenteeBallot.

"The plaintiffs — Adele Robertson of #ExeterNH, Daniel Frye of #ConcordNH, and Regina Wilson of #BrentwoodNH — allege the new law, known as #SenateBill287, will impose a significant burden on every #AbsenteeVoter statewide.

" 'And, in some cases, these burdens will entirely prevent voters from exercising their #RightToVote,' their lawsuit states.
Under the new rules imposed by #SB287, voters will be required to either bring a photo ID to their local election officials to request an absentee ballot in person, or submit a copy of their ID or a notarized signature along with their application.
While proponents said the legislation will better protect election integrity, critics said the changes will add barriers that disproportionately impact #seniors, voters with #disabilities, and those living in #rural parts of the state."
