  1. Tech Bro simps still not figuring out Cyberpunk was a warning. Total surveillance society run by corporation has the same effect on normal life as any other form of totalitarian society.

  5. Auch heute ist wieder so ein Tag, an dem man sich unwillkürlich fragt:

Warum sitzt Jens Spahn noch nicht im Knast?

  7. The comments I made here;

    mastodon.nzoss.nz/@strypey/116

... about the intuitive appeal of libertarianism to teenagers, applies equally to anarchism.

This is a tricky claim. Because in leftish usage, 'anarchist' tends to mean 'anti-authoritarian socialist'. While 'libertarian' often means 'corporatist apologist'. Clearly these are wildly different things.

Bear with me though, I'm going somewhere with this. Hopefully somewhere useful ; )

  10. These findings may seem depressing but really the're a useful, concrete indicator of why coercive regulation with teeth is necessary. In order to manage some small percentage of bad apples, optimized cooperation needs to be formally codified with norms, actively responsive to the frailties of human nature.

Ammunition for discussions with dilletante starry-eyed #libertarians. We (and our regulations) don't have a perfect answer to "is this greed, or need?" but still we are reminded that a few people warped by circumstances including unfettered greed can degrade an entire population's experience and outcomes. Pretending otherwise is folly. "Let it be" isn't adequate.

"Human cooperation is dynamic and often declines even under favourable conditions1,2,3,4. Many prevailing theories explain the decrease of cooperation in terms of strategic behaviour or learning, framed as evidence of rational behaviour or progression towards rationality5,6,7,8,9. Here we show that a key source of long-term decline derives from deviations from rational behaviour that systematically vary over time. We analyse a natural social dilemma in the field—that is, group lending in Sierra Leone—tracking cooperative dynamics over a five-year period. Borrowers enter a joint-liability contract, structured so that if the group loan is not repaid in full, all members lose access to future credit10. This produces a threshold social dilemma with incentives to free-ride11,12. The dataset includes 47,931 group payments made by 7,108 borrowers, augmented with a two-stage cluster sample of semi-structured interviews. We find a statistically robust pattern of punctuated decline driven by behavioural mechanisms13. Cooperation rates start out high but gradually decline due to decreases in group members’ cooperative motivation and effort. Sharp rebounds occur when loans are restarted and clients resensitized to their cooperative responsibilities, even though the group membership and dilemma structure are largely unchanged. This pattern persists over the five-year observation window, but with each successive restart the subsequent decline is more rapid. The findings have direct implications for preventing behavioural decline in cooperative programmes and institutions."

  12. #Libertarians Took Control of This Small Town in #NewHampshire. It Didn’t End Well.

A new book shows the troubling consequences of #GraftonNH’s anti-government experiment.

"Today, we are all living in Grafton. Armies of rabid bears are wandering through our streets, clawing at our window screens, and gnashing their teeth at our children while the phone rings unanswered at the state department of fish and game. The old village church is erupting in flames, but someone has slashed the tires on our town’s lone fire truck, and the fire hydrants—unmaintained for a decade—have all run dry. Terrified, we beg our neighbors for help, only to be told that the Lord will protect us, or that the cataclysm in the streets is just punishment for our moral failures or our political misdeeds."

    by Elizabeth Austin
    August 30, 2020

Excerpt: "Certainly, the author is not alone in finding cause for amusement in Grafton’s funny little basket of deplorables. For years now, reporters and pundits have chosen to focus on the style, rather than the policy substance, of the growing #LibertarianRight. Again and again, we read stories of rural rubes clad head to toe in #MAGA swag, hunched over chipped cutlery in dingy diners, wielding biscuits to wipe the last of the sausage gravy from their oversized plates while vociferously proclaiming that taxation is theft and inveighing against the nanny state. In choosing to shoot these red, white, and blue fish in a barrel, Hongoltz-Hetling is in very good company.

"But had the author not chosen snark over substance, his book could have served as a peculiarly timely cautionary tale, because the conflicting philosophical principles that drive this story are central to understanding American politics today. The differences between the libertarian stumblebums who moved to Grafton and the staff of the #Koch-funded #CatoInstitute are mostly sartorial. And the sad outcomes of Grafton’s wacky social experiment are now being repeated in American communities every single day. "

  14. The few expressions of pushback that have emerged have largely been futile, & instigated by #Republicans who are set to #retire at the end of this congressional session or cut rare maverick streaks, such as Sen #RandPaul & Rep #ThomasMassie, both Kentucky #libertarians who posted Justice #Gorsuch’s words admiringly on social media.

    This video is brutal:

Includes clips of the athletes disavowing #DictatorDon, and a lengthy collection of him being booed at various events (his incredibly rude and insulting attack on #Libertarians AT the Libertarian Party Convention that invited him to speak to them was wildly offensive & clueless.)

  20. @thetnholler.bsky.social ALL libertarians should be gathered, dropped at some bare rock island in the middle of the ocean, and left there, without any water, food, medicine, to see what they think of cooperation and building upon what others built.

Then we talk. After, say, 6months.

If they can't talk after 6months there, I am ok with that, too. No loss.

They almost had it right, but it is a Republican president who is doing it. DEFUND ICE NOW!!! And impeach Kristi Noem.

  23. Insights into people, mostly men, who might have been ignored but for their activity in mass media, including that locus we thought was a place of democracy, the internet. Thanks to Elle Reeve who interviewed and researched these people and John Ganz for casting their conversation. A strange and unstable world.

  24. It's a good thing that #immigration and #ICE are receiving a lot of attention; the immigration system in the USA is poorly structured, and it should be overhauled completely.

Remember; both #democrat and #republican congresses and presidents have upheld this system; there's a reason then-president Obama was called "deporter in chief", with over 3 MILLION people deported over his tenure.

Is there a group that has long held that the system needs to be overhauled? Yes. The #libertarians.

  26. One particular difference between left #libertarians and right libertarians is very clear:

Left libertarians truly believe everyone has the right to #privacy.

Right libertarians also say everyone has the right to privacy, but in practice never mind compromising the privacy of others not in their in-group, as long as theirs is retained.

It’s not a difference in policy, but how the value of humans varies based on hierarchy.

… now extend this to ”everyone will benefit from #AI

  28. I have long criticised #libertarians for being willing to compromise #civilliberties for lower #taxes. But recent years suggest I was grossly underestimating the issue.

Turns out if a blatant fascist ran on a platform of ending all freedom, establishing a #dictatorship and doing a few genocides with a 10% tax rate, and an opponent ran on maintaining #democracy and civil liberties but with a 10.1% tax rate, every bloody libertarian will not only vote for but actively campaign for the fascist.

  30. One pattern that never fails to repeat is the undending fold of former anti-government #libertarians to pro-government repressive #authoritarians after they acquire power.

There is nothing that should surprise you about this. They have not changed how they think at all.

If you start from the question: ”Who should hold power?”, and answer:”People like me.” When you’re not in #power, you call for libertarianism because it gives you power. When you are in power, you work to remove everyone else’s

  31. U.S. LIBERTARIAN PATRI FRIEDMAN: If you're not into [non-democratic, network state for-profit cities] you shouldn't move there.
THE 99 PERCENT: If you're not into trying to have a healthy, sustainable planet for all, you shouldn't live here.

    #resist #libertarians #patrifriedman #networkstatecult

  32. It's not freedom itself that you want, but something that you want to do that's in conflict with what others want to do. And you're unable to go do that somewhere else because of other things you also want, provided in a way that can't/won't travel with you. You choose to not democratically argue for changing the rules like the rest of us, but demand entire systems be uprooted. And somehow this not happening (being treated like everyone else) means you're being unfairly oppressed. #libertarians
