"The plaintiffs — Adele Robertson of #ExeterNH, Daniel Frye of #ConcordNH, and Regina Wilson of #BrentwoodNH — allege the new law, known as #SenateBill287, will impose a significant burden on every #AbsenteeVoter statewide.

" 'And, in some cases, these burdens will entirely prevent voters from exercising their #RightToVote,' their lawsuit states.
Under the new rules imposed by #SB287, voters will be required to either bring a photo ID to their local election officials to request an absentee ballot in person, or submit a copy of their ID or a notarized signature along with their application.

@georgetakei A downside to mail voting: a controlling or abusive husband can insist on supervising his wife's vote, or even commit a felony by filling out her ballot himself.

There's a lot to be said for the comfort and convenience of voting by mail, as one graphic meme had it, "at your kitchen table, with a cat in your lap, and a big book of information about the candidates and ballot questions provided by the state."

There's also a lot to be said for the privacy of the voting booth.

I’ve been voting in elections for a very long time and there have been a few times where something happened that has stuck with me for years and made me feel concerned about voting with a mail or absentee ballot.

In one election, I went to the precinct on election day, marked my ballot and put it in the tabulator. The tabulator spit it back out. I must have made a mistake or there was a stray mark on the ballot or who knows. The machine didn’t accept it. Tried 3 times, it spit it out each time. A precinct worker took the ballot and put it in a “spoiled ballot” pile and gave me a new ballot. I marked that one and it went through fine.

But if the first ballot I’d marked had been something I mailed in or dropped off and an election worker was feeding it into the tabulator on election night, my vote wouldn’t have counted because I wouldn’t be there to have it spoiled and get a new one. It would just be put in the “bad ballot” pile.

I feel like this election in November 2024 is so important that I want to put the ballot in the tabulator myself when in person voting starts. I live in Michigan, the races are competitive and extremely close here. Not just with presidential candidates but with representative candidates both state and federal. It makes me way too nervous that there might be a mistake and the tabulator will kick my ballot out and my vote won’t count on election night.

To be clear, I completely trust our city clerk’s office to run a fair election, but if the tabulator spits out a ballot while the elector is not present, there’s nothing they can do to fix that. The ballot would have to be thrown out. It’s like the “hanging chad” of the modern day (in reference to the recount after the 2000 election) I feel in this election every vote is going to count, at least in Michigan and a few other states. I can’t afford to take the chance so I will be putting the ballot in the tabulator myself to make sure my ballot is counted.
