  10. TapType v1.1 is out. Big update.
Action mode. You can now move the cursor, select text, copy, cut, and paste — all without leaving TapType. Swipe left/right to move, swipe up/down to change granularity (character, word, sentence, line, document). Tap to toggle selection mode. Two-finger swipes for clipboard. Spaces, punctuation, and capitals are all announced properly when navigating by character.
Clipboard mode. Browse your clipboard history and paste from it. It only captures what's on the clipboard when the keyboard opens — no background listener, no spying.
Autocomplete. Word prediction no longer requires you to tap every letter. After a few taps it suggests longer words that match what you've typed so far. It also suggests shorter words in case you hit an extra key.
Spell-out. After announcing a word, TapType spells it out character by character — helpful for homophones like their/there/they're. Configurable delay, can be turned off.
Punctuation rework. Punctuation commits instantly now. Swipe up/down to cycle through options, swipe right again to chain them (!!!, ?!, etc.).
Other stuff: "I" is always capitalized, delete-by-word instead of character, full screen hide keyboard fix, and various bug fixes.

  11. TapType is out. It's a keyboard for blind Android users.
There are no visible keys. You tap where QWERTY keys would be from muscle memory, and a spatial prediction algorithm figures out what you meant. It scores nearby keys using a Gaussian proximity model and runs a beam search against an 80,000 word dictionary. You don't need to be precise. That's the whole point.
Swipe right to commit a word. Swipe down or up to cycle through suggestions. Swipe left to delete. It learns what words you use most and ranks them higher over time, and you can add your own words to a personal dictionary.
Every letter has its own unique sound, from Andre Louis's keyboard sound recordings, so you can learn to identify keys by ear without relying on speech. Each swipe direction has a distinct sound too. TTS is there when you want it, adjustable speed, and you can turn it off entirely if you prefer sounds only.
It has emoji search with skin tone selection and favourites, a number pad mode, an upper case mode, and full punctuation support with a customizable quick list. Two-finger gestures handle things like send, close keyboard, switch keyboard, and voice input.
Everything works with TalkBack. I built this because FlickType was a fantastic keyboard for blind iOS users and then it was gone. Nothing like it existed on Android, so I made one.
It's free, no ads, no tracking, no metrics. I'm not evil.

Edit: Now on 2.0 with multiple languages supported.

Phones now are good but could do better in some aspects, a few apps dont play nice when scaled.

  18. Re last boost, if you are making alt text, make it descriptive. You want visually impaired people to engage with your posts, be inclusive about it. You took the time to put alt text on your picture which obviously means you care in some fashion about accessibility. The truth of it is though, a simple sentence repeating the text of your post, isn't a description. Don't just tell us this is a bird, or this is a flower. Even if you identify the species, that does not give a blind viewer an idea of what is being shown, unless the person has felt the flower or had that flower or bird described to them.
Even if you don't use AI to help describe your picture, which we understand how controversial AI usage is, there are other ways to help improve your descriptions. Consider the color of the flower, the way the bird is moving, the way a cat's face looks or how your fluffy furball is positioned in the photo. Highlight those details, rather than reusing the vvague text of the post, and putting said vague text in the alt text box as a placeholder. Be respectful to those that need accessibility and desire inclusivity.

  19. Oh how I wish @F1 would put the car numbers on the halo so we can tell whose car we're on board with, also the number should be on the shark fin at the back, on the nose & on the rear end plate of the rear wing. Not everyone has 20/20 vision.

  20. Question for those who are familiar with Alternative Text for the blind and visually impaired:

When creating Alternative Text for an image of an informational sign such as for a hiking trail, how verbose should it be?

Be My Eyes does a good job with just images and/or a small amount of text, but for informational signs the text can be quite long. I am concerned if I trim too much then valuable information will be lost.

Welcome @[email protected] you seem to have an #Accessibility focus, and I think largely #blind, #visuallyImpaired. Feel free to let me know if I missed something, or am putting things that aren't right.

I'm wondering if you've been around long enough to have noticed a change to the alt tags on mastodon. I've noticed that as a sighted person who
does use them, on one instance they've become basically useless.

  29. Went to the Vista Center for Blind and Visually Impaired in Santa Cruz today. It was for a combination of personal and professional reasons: (1) I'm blind / low-vision and need local resources and community, and (2) I'm looking for local business connections for my new accessibility nonprofit, Brain Computer Enterprises, Cooperative Inc. ( @bce ). It was a very helpful and productive first visit on both fronts!

  30. @Tor Iver Wilhelmsen For starters, making it a hard technical requirement on the server side would exclude and discriminate against
    • actually blind or visually-impaired people who do post images regardless
    • neurodivergent people who, due to their disability, are incapable of turning images into words

Besides, what's "the platform"? Only Mastodon or the whole Fediverse?

Just in case you didn't know: The Fediverse server applications that can send posts with images and other media onto your timeline include, but aren't limited to:
    • Mastodon
    • Glitch
    • Hometown
    • Pleroma
    • Akkoma
    • Misskey
    • Calckey
    • Firefish
    • Iceshrimp-JS
    • Iceshrimp.NET
    • CherryPick
    • Sharkey
    • Meisskey
    • GoToSocial
    • snac
    • Hollo
    • Tootik
    • Mitra
    • micro.blog
    • Smithereen
    • Socialhome
    • Friendica
    • Hubzilla (that's what this comment came from)
    • (streams)
    • Forte
    • Pixelfed
    • Vernissage
    • PeerTube
    • Loops
    • Plume
    • WriteFreely (needs an external image host, but still)
    • WordPress
    • Ghost
    • nodeBB
    • Lemmy
    • /kbin
    • Mbin
    • PieFed

If "the platform" means something with one development team, it's only Mastodon. And everything else I've listed above, and then some, is free to keep alt-text optional.

If "the platform" means the whole Fediverse, this means that well over 100 Fediverse server applications, all being developed independently from another and especially from Mastodon, often working vastly differently from Mastodon, would have to make it impossible to post images without alt-text. This, by the way, is next to impossible to implement on at least some of them due to the way they handle images and therefore alt-text.

And you can be certain about one thing: If the Mastodon developers add something to Mastodon, it's very unlikely that Mario Vavti and Harald Eilertsen, the Hubzilla developers, and Mike Macgirvin, inventor of Friendica and Hubzilla and still developer of (streams) and Forte, will follow suit. Other server applications won't because they're dead in spite of still having running servers (Calckey, Firefish, /kbin etc.), they're in maintenance mode which means they won't get new features (Iceshrimp-JS), or their development is on hold (Plume).

  31. Sooooo... thinking about the possibility and feasibility of big life changes, namely studying opera seriously in Europe. Would love to connect with other #Blind language learners, especially those using #braille as a component of their learning. Currently learning #French. Am particularly interested in chatting with people who have taught themselves grade 2 French Braille as well as those who are either conversational or fluent and/or who have worked in or currently live in a #Francophone European country. If this is you or you're in any way adjacent to this world, please reach out. Would love to talk to you. Would also love to chat with people who use #MusicBraille / #BrailleMusic in Europe.

  32. OK, #ProTip time

you might have noticed that some of my toots have multiple blank lines so that I can create some space between the main body and (e.g.) a footnote…

“but itgrrl” you might ask yourself “how is such witchcraft possible, since most platforms render #UserGeneratedContent as sanitised #HTML & rarely convert multiple newlines into multiple line break or paragraph #HTML tags? 😲”

welp, I have a replacement text trigger for that too 😜 💁‍♀️

    trigger: //nb

expands to: (non-breaking space #unicode character)

for this one, I may need to apologise to to #blind & otherwise #VisuallyImpaired folks, as it would be annoying & / or confusing to have “non-breaking space” read out by your #ScreenReader software (I haven’t checked this across a bunch™ of screen readers)

from what I’ve read, most screen readers won’t / shouldn’t read out non-printable characters (either HTML or unicode) but some may – I’d love to get some real-world feedback on the range of different screen reader behaviours for this case
