I am taking this time, and the increased activity on certain hashtags to do some shameless promotion of #OurBlind. OurBlind comprises the Discord, Lemmy, and Reddit communities operated by the staff of the r/Blind subreddit, as well as those who have joined since the creation of the Discord in 2022, and Lemmy in 2023. We have members from all over the world, and of all ages, hearing and vision levels, and are a safe space for Our LGBTQIA+ and neurodiverse friends. 14. I'm proud to announce the launch of Blind Productions.
Blind Productions is a showcase and community I built to celebrate blind creative professionals — musicians, DJs, actors, authors, podcasters, and content creators — and to give us one place to discover each other's work, collaborate, and connect.
Here's the honest part: this is the ground floor. The doors are open, the foundation is built, and now it's time to fill it up. I'm inviting you to help shape what this becomes — a living archive that future generations can search to discover the musicians and creators who came before them, and a moderated space where we create, support one another, and network as a community.
    What's here today:
    • A searchable directory of blind creatives, each profile with a bio, links to their work, audio to listen to, and video to watch.
    • A moderated community forum for collaboration, support, opportunities, and networking.
    • Accessibility built in from the ground up — screen-reader friendly, fully keyboard operable, with adjustable text, themes, and high contrast on every page.
So here's my ask: start submitting profile suggestions. Nominate yourself. Nominate the artists you admire. Bring the people who deserve to be found. Create a free account, join the conversation, and let's build something that lasts.
This is how a legacy gets started — together.
    Explore and submit: blind.productions
You must be 18 or older to join.

  16. Moin, Fedi,

    Hi, Fedi,
I’m looking for your help and advice:
Which operating system is best suited for blind or visually impaired people? Or does it not matter which operating system is used?
I ask that only people who are blind or visually impaired themselves, or who actively support such individuals, participate in this poll.
Requirements for the operating system: maximum independence for those affected.
Feel free to leave comments as well.

  17. @debacle
The latest versions of @gnome (not from Debian Stable, as it will inevitably be years behind) are much better for accessibility for #visuallyimpaired users. I have a #blind buddy—who was very frustrated at how broken things were—and he's now very happy with #GNOME's progress lately, because it is now usable again for them on Wayland… it's reportedly 80-90% there, i.e. "good-enough" for them at least.

I think GNOME (and maybe KDE?) are your only options for #a11y at the moment.

  19. This was posted yesterday, I think. I'm adding it here to the end of this thread, since it didn't get placed there when it was originally posted. Woke this morning to over 120 notifications. My post regarding bansuri learning (see thread) has gotten far more reach than I expected it to. I've only gotten one possible lead and am still very much looking to connect with someone about this, but the boosts are really appreciated. thank you so much for the help so far!#Bansuri #BlindMusicians #Accessibility #MusicAccessibility #IndianClassicalMusic #Flute #IndianFlute #VisuallyImpaired #AskFedi

  20. Update: See thread for origional topic. I have a lesson set up with a western flute instructor who, even though she doesn't have a lot of knowledge about the Bansuri, she's willing to do some research for me to help me confirm hand placement and flute angle. I have also, thanks to a friend of mine, connected with someone from India who is also #Blind and a self-taught #Musician who has given me permission to pick her brain when necessary. A lot of the rest will come with time. Thankfully, with there being so many videos out there and my ability to play by ear, I have plenty of options to learn new material. I'll be placing an order soon for a G bass from Labu Flutes and later switch to a larger flute, which I will happily pay the higher price at this point to get made custom. Anubodh, though expensive, has communicated with me in both a timely and informative fashion regarding what he can customize for me and what exactly each customization will do. Would I like to find a good teacher from which to learn? Absolutely. But at least I'm no longer feeling stuck and/or caged by a lack of options. The number of boosts I've received has been amazing. Thanks, guys. Boosts are still welcome. #Bansuri #BlindMusicians #Accessibility #MusicAccessibility #IndianClassicalMusic #Flute #IndianFlute #VisuallyImpaired #AskFedi

  21. Hi all, I'll be part of an event tonight where people with disabilities will be sharing stories of empowerment through technology. Here's a link to the event page if anyone's interested, attendance is free and via Zoom. I'll be participating, and there will be several opportunities for those in the audience to come up and tell a story as well. disabledstoriescollective.org/

  22. Okay hive mind, here's one for you. Ready? I'm a Totally #blind #musician looking to learn bansuri. Are there any blind/visually impaired bansuri players or Indian classical flute players out there? I’d love to know how you learned hand position and flute angle, particularly for larger flutes, without relying on visual demonstration. I have played the western concert flute for over 25 years, so getting a sound is easy. I'm also seeking accessible teachers/courses or live online lessons with strong verbal description. Boosts very much appreciated!

  25. @Tor Iver Wilhelmsen For starters, making it a hard technical requirement on the server side would exclude and discriminate against
    • actually blind or visually-impaired people who do post images regardless
    • neurodivergent people who, due to their disability, are incapable of turning images into words

Besides, what's "the platform"? Only Mastodon or the whole Fediverse?

Just in case you didn't know: The Fediverse server applications that can send posts with images and other media onto your timeline include, but aren't limited to:
    • Mastodon
    • Glitch
    • Hometown
    • Pleroma
    • Akkoma
    • Misskey
    • Calckey
    • Firefish
    • Iceshrimp-JS
    • Iceshrimp.NET
    • CherryPick
    • Sharkey
    • Meisskey
    • GoToSocial
    • snac
    • Hollo
    • Tootik
    • Mitra
    • micro.blog
    • Smithereen
    • Socialhome
    • Friendica
    • Hubzilla (that's what this comment came from)
    • (streams)
    • Forte
    • Pixelfed
    • Vernissage
    • PeerTube
    • Loops
    • Plume
    • WriteFreely (needs an external image host, but still)
    • WordPress
    • Ghost
    • nodeBB
    • Lemmy
    • /kbin
    • Mbin
    • PieFed

If "the platform" means something with one development team, it's only Mastodon. And everything else I've listed above, and then some, is free to keep alt-text optional.

If "the platform" means the whole Fediverse, this means that well over 100 Fediverse server applications, all being developed independently from another and especially from Mastodon, often working vastly differently from Mastodon, would have to make it impossible to post images without alt-text. This, by the way, is next to impossible to implement on at least some of them due to the way they handle images and therefore alt-text.

And you can be certain about one thing: If the Mastodon developers add something to Mastodon, it's very unlikely that Mario Vavti and Harald Eilertsen, the Hubzilla developers, and Mike Macgirvin, inventor of Friendica and Hubzilla and still developer of (streams) and Forte, will follow suit. Other server applications won't because they're dead in spite of still having running servers (Calckey, Firefish, /kbin etc.), they're in maintenance mode which means they won't get new features (Iceshrimp-JS), or their development is on hold (Plume).

  26. Sooooo... thinking about the possibility and feasibility of big life changes, namely studying opera seriously in Europe. Would love to connect with other #Blind language learners, especially those using #braille as a component of their learning. Currently learning #French. Am particularly interested in chatting with people who have taught themselves grade 2 French Braille as well as those who are either conversational or fluent and/or who have worked in or currently live in a #Francophone European country. If this is you or you're in any way adjacent to this world, please reach out. Would love to talk to you. Would also love to chat with people who use #MusicBraille / #BrailleMusic in Europe.

  27. As if Leith Walk pedestrians didn’t have enough fixed obstacles to contend with already, a pop-up market stall outside of Lola’s Bar occupies the whole pavement.

This means everyone has to walk on the dedicated cycle path to get around it.

When we challenged the market stall sellers they seemed unconcerned about the visually impaired or others who may not be able to navigate their way around them.
