I hope all my fellow #Blind, #DeafBlind, and #VisuallyImpaired people, along with their family, friends, and others have a great time at the #ACB and/or #NFB 2026 conventions. I am taking this time, and the increased activity on certain hashtags to do some shameless promotion of #OurBlind. OurBlind comprises the Discord, Lemmy, and Reddit communities operated by the staff of the r/Blind subreddit, as well as those who have joined since the creation of the Discord in 2022, and Lemmy in 2023. We have members from all over the world, and of all ages, hearing and vision levels, and are a safe space for Our LGBTQIA+ and neurodiverse friends. Our general community guidelines, and the links to reach our platforms can be found on our website.

I'm proud to announce the launch of Blind Productions.
Blind Productions is a showcase and community I built to celebrate blind creative professionals — musicians, DJs, actors, authors, podcasters, and content creators — and to give us one place to discover each other's work, collaborate, and connect.
Here's the honest part: this is the ground floor. The doors are open, the foundation is built, and now it's time to fill it up. I'm inviting you to help shape what this becomes — a living archive that future generations can search to discover the musicians and creators who came before them, and a moderated space where we create, support one another, and network as a community.
What's here today:
• A searchable directory of blind creatives, each profile with a bio, links to their work, audio to listen to, and video to watch.
• A moderated community forum for collaboration, support, opportunities, and networking.
• Accessibility built in from the ground up — screen-reader friendly, fully keyboard operable, with adjustable text, themes, and high contrast on every page.
So here's my ask: start submitting profile suggestions. Nominate yourself. Nominate the artists you admire. Bring the people who deserve to be found. Create a free account, join the conversation, and let's build something that lasts.
This is how a legacy gets started — together.
Explore and submit: https://blind.productions
You must be 18 or older to join.

The results regarding operating systems for blind or visually impaired people—multiple answers were allowed—are quite clear, even though only a few people in this group (10) voted.
I would like to thank everyone who participated. It helps me get my bearings. -
Moin, Fedi,
Hi, Fedi,
I’m looking for your help and advice:
Which operating system is best suited for blind or visually impaired people? Or does it not matter which operating system is used?
I ask that only people who are blind or visually impaired themselves, or who actively support such individuals, participate in this poll.
Requirements for the operating system: maximum independence for those affected.
Feel free to leave comments as well. -

The latest versions of @gnome (not from Debian Stable, as it will inevitably be years behind) are much better for accessibility for #visuallyimpaired users. I have a #blind buddy—who was very frustrated at how broken things were—and he's now very happy with #GNOME's progress lately, because it is now usable again for them on Wayland… it's reportedly 80-90% there, i.e. "good-enough" for them at least.I think GNOME (and maybe KDE?) are your only options for #a11y at the moment.

This was posted yesterday, I think. I'm adding it here to the end of this thread, since it didn't get placed there when it was originally posted. Woke this morning to over 120 notifications. My post regarding bansuri learning (see thread) has gotten far more reach than I expected it to. I've only gotten one possible lead and am still very much looking to connect with someone about this, but the boosts are really appreciated. thank you so much for the help so far!#Bansuri #BlindMusicians #Accessibility #MusicAccessibility #IndianClassicalMusic #Flute #IndianFlute #VisuallyImpaired #AskFedi

Update: See thread for origional topic. I have a lesson set up with a western flute instructor who, even though she doesn't have a lot of knowledge about the Bansuri, she's willing to do some research for me to help me confirm hand placement and flute angle. I have also, thanks to a friend of mine, connected with someone from India who is also #Blind and a self-taught #Musician who has given me permission to pick her brain when necessary. A lot of the rest will come with time. Thankfully, with there being so many videos out there and my ability to play by ear, I have plenty of options to learn new material. I'll be placing an order soon for a G bass from Labu Flutes and later switch to a larger flute, which I will happily pay the higher price at this point to get made custom. Anubodh, though expensive, has communicated with me in both a timely and informative fashion regarding what he can customize for me and what exactly each customization will do. Would I like to find a good teacher from which to learn? Absolutely. But at least I'm no longer feeling stuck and/or caged by a lack of options. The number of boosts I've received has been amazing. Thanks, guys. Boosts are still welcome. #Bansuri #BlindMusicians #Accessibility #MusicAccessibility #IndianClassicalMusic #Flute #IndianFlute #VisuallyImpaired #AskFedi

Hi all, I'll be part of an event tonight where people with disabilities will be sharing stories of empowerment through technology. Here's a link to the event page if anyone's interested, attendance is free and via Zoom. I'll be participating, and there will be several opportunities for those in the audience to come up and tell a story as well. https://disabledstoriescollective.org/virtually-abled-stories-of-disabled-tech-life/

Okay hive mind, here's one for you. Ready? I'm a Totally #blind #musician looking to learn bansuri. Are there any blind/visually impaired bansuri players or Indian classical flute players out there? I’d love to know how you learned hand position and flute angle, particularly for larger flutes, without relying on visual demonstration. I have played the western concert flute for over 25 years, so getting a sound is easy. I'm also seeking accessible teachers/courses or live online lessons with strong verbal description. Boosts very much appreciated!

#VisuallyImpaired #voters sue #NewHampshire over changes to #Absentee #BallotAccess
The plaintiffs say the new law will deter some voters with #disabilities from participating in the democratic process at all, even after they have registered to voteBy Steven Porter Globe Staff, Updated August 21, 2025, 9:30 a.m.
"Three people with visual impairments are suing New Hampshire officials to challenge the constitutionality of a law that will soon tighten #PhotoID requirements for voters seeking an #AbsenteeBallot.
"The plaintiffs — Adele Robertson of #ExeterNH, Daniel Frye of #ConcordNH, and Regina Wilson of #BrentwoodNH — allege the new law, known as #SenateBill287, will impose a significant burden on every #AbsenteeVoter statewide.
" 'And, in some cases, these burdens will entirely prevent voters from exercising their #RightToVote,' their lawsuit states.
Under the new rules imposed by #SB287, voters will be required to either bring a photo ID to their local election officials to request an absentee ballot in person, or submit a copy of their ID or a notarized signature along with their application.
While proponents said the legislation will better protect election integrity, critics said the changes will add barriers that disproportionately impact #seniors, voters with #disabilities, and those living in #rural parts of the state."Read more:

Hey everyone! I want to let you know that the #LondonDrugs store in Rutherford Mall in #Nanaimo has an amazing #AntiAbleist #inclusive manager. My friend, Tessie, is a #DisabledEmployee there. The manager, Warren, went out of his way to help her feel supported at work. He made her a shirt & a sign for her workstation 👏
If you're on #VancouverIsland in the Nanaimo area, please support this specific store. Please let them know that the public appreciates how they treat their disabled employees & thank Warren for being a stellar, inclusive & thoughtful store #manager 👍

More BME people will be there all week, but the engineering team will join the party on the 21th.
Come say hi, bitch at us because we don't have x feature (ok you can but please be nice about it), and have a good time with us all (I know I will).

Come join us on the #OurBlind Discord for our 2nd annual New Year's Eve function. Open to all #Blind, #DeafBlind, #LowVision, and #VisuallyImpaired persons, as well as friends, family, and those who work in #blindness services. @mastoblind
This year's theme is the same as last year, party like it's a late 90s mandatory office function held in the break room after hours because of course it's not like people have better things to do. It starts at 12:00 US Eastern on the 31st and runs until some point on the 1st, people are welcome to come and go throughout, honestly this is very informal.

As it is the start of a new year I thought I would post a short message to share https://ourblind.com/ for all my fellow #blind, #lowvision, and #visuallyimpaired people around #BlindFedi. For those that are not already familiar with #OurBlind it is the network of communities that originated on the r/blind #subreddit and has since spun out to also include a #discord server with over 850 members as of writing this, and a #lemmy instance. @mastoblind

Being a partially-sighted artist, I’m fascinated by how differently we all see the world.
Because of the angle of the sunlight, the shadows in this photo of a footprint appear on the lower edge of the imprint rather than the upper edge. Our brains expect light to come from above, so i see this as a footprint shape sticking up out of the sand rather than indented into it.
How do you see it?

Leckhampton Hill Walk is a recent pointillism-style watercolour painting. Unable to drive, I draw much inspiration from local spaces I can walk to.
This is a view from along the cross-country walk up towards the top of Leckhampton Hill.I love fallen trees and the wealth of microbial biodiversity that makes them their home as the wood slowly decays.
