  1. @joannaholman
    Great idea!
Now I’m picturing a series, where communities come to their local men’s shed* with a problem which is then solved - or not, but the really interesting thing is the process & dynamics.

    * (and by the way, some men’s sheds I know have transformed or evolved into ‘community sheds’ - even tho still dominated by males, who tend to have more of these woodworking, metalworking, machinery skills)

  3. Sasanian military helmets reveal advanced brass technology across the Persian Empire

Ancient Persian metalworkers worked with brass far earlier and in far more varied ways than researchers once thought. A new study of metal artifacts from the Sasanian Empire shows brass in jewelry, fittings, and military helmets between the 4th and 7th centuries CE...

  5. CW: chastity cages, custom urethra plugs, sex toys

Almost anyone in the scene knows chastity cages - the flats ones are especially popular. Most of them come with a (boring) urethra plug that can be screwed into the front plate.

But what if we could do more?
Custom-made, turned from medical-grade V4A stainless steel, polished and reamed (hah!) to a 3.1mm through-hole diameter.
I can produce any outer diameter <= 12mm (or I would need to order larger stock), and any length <= 100mm. The number of bumps is customizable, as well as the difference between the main diameter and the bump diameter.

And for even more fun: With a custom extended plug, any other toy can be attached to the front of the cage via an M6 thread. In this case a FunFactory silicon dildo into which I glued a captive M6 nut with silicon adhesive.

Want one? Ping me and we can discuss details

  6. Tried using this frame and some sun shade fabric on one of my raised beds and was pretty happy with how the design worked until some really heavy winds blew it over and bent up one of the legs late last season

Dragged it back to the shop this morning, sawed off the bent leg and welded on a new one. Good as new

My welding skills are such that I advise against driving over any bridges I may have worked on, but I can stick a couple pieces of rebar together just fine

  8. Carrot paint applied and homemade trailer hitch installed. I even found a cap for the ball in my collection of old farm junk.

This Rilak alkyd enamel paint is pretty decent, although better sprayed than brushed. But even in summer weather it takes days to dry and weeks to fully cure through.

  10. DIY flail mulcher build. Pretty well done! Shaft alignment didn't seem to happen though.

Didn't say how much it cost him, which would've been interesting. I wonder, because you can buy these for €900 (Mateng NEFL).

He still had to buy all the steel, four flange bearings, the gearbox, pulleys + taper fittings and the hammers, so I kinda doubt he saved much, if any.

    Fun to watch though! :-)

  12. Test drive successful, apart from a potato crate falling off the trailer and getting crushed while I was enthusiastically zooming around the yard with a huge trailer behind the little mownster 😖

Put some rust converting primer on over night and then it shall get orange paint so I can see it and because there's some left from the pallet fork project.

  14. Almost ready for testing. The critical part was a method of quickly attaching and removing the hitch.

I've changed from my original idea with the hooks a bit and made two welded bolt adapters that remain on the frame. The rod at the top gets seated in the grass collector bag arms, then is swung down for the tangs on the frame to meet the bolt adapters and secured with two wingnuts.

It's quite sturdy, I've stood on it to test 😁

As usual, all made from scrap metal found around the farm.

  16. Silly little details that take forever, but then who wants to leave the ends open for grass and dirt to get in.

  18. #SidequestSunday! Making a trailer hitch for the lawnmownster.

You can buy those, but they are made of cheese and have some weird hitch that only fits the matching cheese trailer and none of mine.

Getting to play with the new cold cut chop saw. It really doesn't like long flat cuts and you can't clamp the piece rotated when cutting mitres. The solution is to clamp it with a spacer so the workpiece ends up further out on the curved part of the blade.
