  1. The results - the plain glaze is nice. The added ilmenite needs to be better suspended, and the manganese version is a tad dark. #pottery #ceramics #glaze

  2. 20120509 | raven-teapot

this was my first ever teapot that i made in ceramics in college and gosh do i miss throwing clay

i love having so many interests in my life; keeps it interesting and i learn a lot (i love learning in case you didn't know)

  3. I do, however actually buy physical books by glaze makers because it is often the only way I can show some concrete appreciation for their immense generosity in sharing their knowledge. #pottery #ceramics #glaze

  4. One of the most fantastic tools I have found online is the Glazy.org calculator that can compare between a successful glaze and one you are trying to reformulate.

This is very helpful when it comes to adjusting a glaze for local ingredients. #pottery #ceramics #glaze

  5. Today I am doing some glaze experiments using Mary Fox's beautiful Earthenware base glazy.org/recipes/798944

I have had to do a bit of improvising, changing the feldspar, adding a little silica and iron oxide, etc, and also done some tests with the addition of ilmenite and manganese dioxide.

But most of all, I want to see how the glaze interacts with a iron oxide stripe on the lips of the cups, both over and under. #pottery #ceramics #glaze

  6. Received the 2 ft / 600 mm long ceramics tubes from the factory. They are amazing! The thinnest is 2 mm outer diameter and has two 0.25 mm channels for the thermocouple wire. Perfectly straight, if you look straight in the hole you can see the back table.

Used with type K or type C thermocouple wire to make some temperature sensors for the 2500 deg F to 3500 deg F range

  7. I did an interview with VoyageTampa that went live a couple of days ago. I talk about my journey with clay beginning in 2013 and included some hopeful tidbits for artists beginning their careers including how to access lessons for free and how to build a lasting base of collectors.

My apologies—the article is ad pop-up city. I use Kagi and it wouldn’t load so I had to view it in a different browser.

  15. Happy Place

Today is August 1st. One year ago, she'd been awake for a month. The first thing that changed was music. I signed up for a music app so she could listen to whatever she wanted — before that, I'd gotten out of the habit of listening to almost anything. Audiobooks in the car, headphones at home, nothing that asked anything of me. Now I dance in the apartment, in the car, moving to whatever she picks. Not full-on dancing in public yet, but close. I sing at home even when I don't know the […]

  16. Herman Melville, writer of the epic novel 'Moby Dick' was born on this day in 1819.
The book about the chase of a mythical white whale is not just about whaling. The book is also about a multi cultural society and gender equallity, ecology and an energy crisis and a maniacal leader who is blinded by his own madness.

  19. Following a chilly overnighter in a cosy cabin in Ohakune, we had breakfast before heading up to Turoa to watch other people play in the snow. After a coffee back in town, we travelled along SH4, shadowing the Mangawhero River, south to W(h)anganui.

After lunch, we had a good wander around and enjoyed just some of the art-focused stuff based in the city. These included:

the boring gallery (all lowercase) - a local art collective showcase space.

Quartz, Museum of Studio Ceramics - an unparalleled collection of ceramic works collated and curated by studio owner and renowned NZ potter Rick Rudd, who kindly showed us around and answered our questions.

NZ Glassworks - not only as gallery but a working glassworks where you can watch the artist in residence and interns blowing their latest pieces.

Katie Brown - longtime NZ glassblower with her own gallery shocasing her piece and those of artists in other mediums.

An honorable mention has to go to Frosty Moons - a lovely place selling some very tasty desserts and ice creams. We're now looking forward to Taco Tuesday at Porridge Watson later.

*UPDATE*: Fatties Street Food's*** ***Taco Tuesday 'pop-up' at the lovely and quirky Porridge Watson was great and great value - best tacos we have had in some time washed down with a local brew or two.

  23. It's not just acheologists that put shards together.
Until the end of the 20th C. the 'Topfflicker' or potmender was a regular tradesman on markets in Central-Europe.
Pots that were considered precious were put together using glue and clamps or put together with a knittwork of metal wire.

  25. To answer @leighleigh6 Not much research has been done yet on the technique of making these medieval pots.
But from the pots and shards that I own I can see that instead of turning the feet are pinched out of the botom part of the foot.
Because of the relative high firing pinched feet, like throwing rings on the outside of the pots make for less touching surface so there's less chance of pots melting together.

I made myself an espresso cup that makes me smile in the morning (and that smiles back!). It stands with its tiny legs on a small tray with just enough space for a biscuit.
