On my not so WTF project, the failed glaze that began to look like Oribe ware to me, one has come out of the oven. There's a tiny bit of crawling, but I can rectify that because it needs to go back in with a final coat of food-safe glaze on top.

The recipe for Lana's Chun is here at glazy. https://glazy.org/recipes/525549 #pottery #ceramics

Meanwhile, I made up this recipe for Lana's Chun - a beautiful low fire recipe that seems interesting. In the recipe it is tinted with a small amount of copper carbonate, but I split the recipe in half, added the copper to half of it, and a tiny amount of cobalt oxide to the other, just to see what happens.
And also, I made some tiny little bowls with a few different colours of terra sig, to be bisqued, in preparation to see how they go with the glaze I just mixed up.

Continuing on with my WTF experimentation, inspired by Mary Fox's book. I forgot to take a picture of the orange terra sigillata tiny plate once it came out of the kiln after the oxide wash and the borax went onto it. The oxide was was nice... But I was too timid with the borax sprinkles. In any case, onwards. It how has a base transparent glaze applied (the white), and then I interfered with the leftovers of it, and added some stains to the glaze mix, and did shit. #pottery #ceramics

Volví al taller de cerámica con Gina que es la Argentina mejor Argentina del mundo 😅
Es una maravilla el barro, se me olvida lo gratificante que es hacer algo desde cero. Esta vez usé torno e hice dos platos, uno para cada gato 🥲

A Bronze Age kiln in the Saudi desert made bichrome pottery for over a millennium. New chemical and petrographic work traces its exports to Timna and Tell el-Kheleifeh, and asks if it counts as an early brand.

Mary Heilmann obituary
By Charles DarwentVisitors to Mary Heilmann’s show at the Whitechapel Gallery in 2016 were offered the novel experience of looking at art while scooting about on wheeled wooden chairs. These, too, turned out to be artworks. One, Sunny Chair for the Whitechapel, had been made by Heilmann for the occasion. Rough-hewn from plywood, backed in nylon webbing and painted bright yellow, it seemed happily untidy; as an object, but also as a type. This was true of all the works in Looking at Pictures, and was intentional.

Creating a brand. Genesis, transformation and diffusion of Qurayyah Painted Ware
"We argue that the combination of technological continuity, visual identity, and wide regional dissemination makes QPW 4 an early example of brand-making in ceramic production."

I have a Shimpo banding wheel. It was about 65 Euros. There are other brands, probably just as good, but do not buy a cheap one online without knowing how solid it is. You need a really heavy one. If you get a cheap one that only spins a few times before stopping, you'll be so frustrated. So when you go down to your pottery supply place to buy the clay, ask to feel the wheels. The good ones will last a lifetime. #pottery #ceramics 7/ https://potterycrafters.com/the-best-banding-wheels/
-
So what do you need? To begin with, a lot of what you need you can find in your kitchen.
1. Clay - I suggest white earthenware because it's cheap, easy to work with, and easy to recycle.
2. Sponge, string, trimming tools, an old credit card for smoothing. Old pillow case for rolling out. A rolling pin from your kitchen. Used plastic bags.
3. A banding wheel. This is really the only expensive purchase because you want a good, heavy one with really good centrifugal force. #pottery #ceramics 6/ -
If you are interested in getting into pottery, and find the whole prospect daunting, I heartily suggest hand-building. It is often looked down on by the ceramics community, but that is stupid. Some of the most beautiful ceramic objects in the world are hand-built. It's not that I disdain the electric potters wheel, but my experience with handbuilding gave me so much knowledge and know-how that I would go on to use on a potters wheel. #ceramics #pottery 6/

I still love pinch pots and coil building. It is the technique I use more than any other and most of my work - which you might think is thrown on a potters wheel - is actually made on a banding wheel.
I have the most amount of control. I am not driven by an inexorably turning wheel. I determine the speed, the amount of water, etc. (hand building uses far less clay and far less water). #pottery #ceramics 5/

When I moved onto the #pottery wheel, it was a steep, steep learning curve, and just getting my hands on it once a week meant that my progress was very slow. It's only after almost a year that I feel confident in slamming a ball of clay down on the wheel and knowing I can turn it into a fairly creditable pot. And still tend to throw things too thin for earthenware - which is what I work with. I still leave too much clay at the base. But yes, now, I can absolutely make you a vase. #ceramics 2/

I must have changed. There was a time in my life when I associated my opinion with the solidity of my identity. And as a knee-jerk reaction, I still probably do that too much. But time works on me differently now. Who I am and any given opinion I might hold are not the same thing. And it is friends like @elfkin who prompt me to reconsider my first response, think again, see with other eyes.
I used to think it made me weak. Now I know it makes me a better craftsperson. #pottery #ceramics.

The making 🌿
One ball of clay, one stamp, one press. Then again. And again. Thirty times until the canvas is full.
No wheel — just my hands and stamps and a rhythm you fall into somewhere around the tenth one. Every Beelipad gets its own pattern: ferns, dandelions, a dragonfly. No two alike, because that’s not how hands work.
They’ll go into a shallow dish of water so bees have a dry place to land and drink.

Anyway, it has set me off on a hunt for waste ingredients and detritus that could be used in ceramics. There's a lady in the market close to me who filets anchovies all day long. I am going to ask her for the fish bones. I am sure if I calcine them, I could use them as a kind of bone ash. Same with mussel and clam shells. I have a mortar. I can force these things into a use! Hahahahha. #pottery #ceramics

If I am totally honest, I have found a lot of the online world of pottery glazes, like everything else, awash with consumerism. There are whole channels where people boast about how many Mayco glazes they own, and layer on top of each other. And they are so expensive. It really kind of put me off.
I find myself retreating to very simple ingredients and what can be done with them.
Clay, rust, eggshells, washing powder, vinegar, wood ash, seaweed ash, etc.

In my ongoing feria of glaze experimentation in August, inspired by Mary Fox, I'm pursuing my little free hand project.
My little dish was brushed with a few coats of orange terra sig, and bisqued. Today I played around with a red iron oxide wash - a very simple material I am completely enamoured with. It settled nicely into the rough grooves I carved and I sponged some off around but not in the centre.
Then I brushed it with sticky CMC, and sprinkled on some borax. #pottery #ceramics
