  4. The results - the plain glaze is nice. The added ilmenite needs to be better suspended, and the manganese version is a tad dark. #pottery #ceramics #glaze

  5. 20120509 | raven-teapot

this was my first ever teapot that i made in ceramics in college and gosh do i miss throwing clay

i love having so many interests in my life; keeps it interesting and i learn a lot (i love learning in case you didn't know)

  6. I do, however actually buy physical books by glaze makers because it is often the only way I can show some concrete appreciation for their immense generosity in sharing their knowledge. #pottery #ceramics #glaze

  7. One of the most fantastic tools I have found online is the Glazy.org calculator that can compare between a successful glaze and one you are trying to reformulate.

This is very helpful when it comes to adjusting a glaze for local ingredients. #pottery #ceramics #glaze

  8. Today I am doing some glaze experiments using Mary Fox's beautiful Earthenware base glazy.org/recipes/798944

I have had to do a bit of improvising, changing the feldspar, adding a little silica and iron oxide, etc, and also done some tests with the addition of ilmenite and manganese dioxide.

But most of all, I want to see how the glaze interacts with a iron oxide stripe on the lips of the cups, both over and under. #pottery #ceramics #glaze

  9. I knew my mug handles were way off, but didn't know how to approach handle design. This fantastic breakdown of aesthetics and function gave me the basic understanding I needed to start refining them, from leverage and torque to friction and pressure: oldforgecreations.co.uk/blog/m

In the photo, left is before, right is after. It's night and day how they balance when you hold them.

(They also use the same glaze combo, just different amounts.)

The man with the pipe is made at Pottenbakkerij Gitmans end the other image is made at Pottenbakkerij Weduwe Paar.

  13. A few months ago Claire van Damme a student from @designacademy Eindhoven visited the pottery here in Steyl and she made these pictures. It's always nice to see the pottery from someone elses perspective.

  14. Herman Melville, writer of the epic novel 'Moby Dick' was born on this day in 1819.
The book about the chase of a mythical white whale is not just about whaling. The book is also about a multi cultural society and gender equallity, ecology and an energy crisis and a maniacal leader who is blinded by his own madness.

  18. It's not just acheologists that put shards together.
Until the end of the 20th C. the 'Topfflicker' or potmender was a regular tradesman on markets in Central-Europe.
Pots that were considered precious were put together using glue and clamps or put together with a knittwork of metal wire.

  19. Ochtrup, a pottery centre in the North of NRW, Germany, was famous for its ceramic water whistlle called 'Ochtrupper Nachtigal'.
The whistlle has become a symbol for the town. Their tiny ceramics museum in the former Eiling pottery is worth a visit. toepfereimuseum.ochtrup.de/

  20. To answer @leighleigh6 Not much research has been done yet on the technique of making these medieval pots.
But from the pots and shards that I own I can see that instead of turning the feet are pinched out of the botom part of the foot.
Because of the relative high firing pinched feet, like throwing rings on the outside of the pots make for less touching surface so there's less chance of pots melting together.

  22. Tiny clay guy 💜

I made myself an espresso cup that makes me smile in the morning (and that smiles back!). It stands with its tiny legs on a small tray with just enough space for a biscuit.

  24. A #ceramics challenge. A friend commissioned me to make 2 ramen bowls & 2 teacups that were roughly the same shape as a set she'd bought years ago.

Hers were mass produced and she wanted handmade work.

The difficulty was in scaling up the teacups because hers were smaller than she wanted.

So I took a bunch of photos & measurements & ended up with these.

    I hope she likes them.
