  4. The results - the plain glaze is nice. The added ilmenite needs to be better suspended, and the manganese version is a tad dark. #pottery #ceramics #glaze

this was my first ever teapot that i made in ceramics in college and gosh do i miss throwing clay

i love having so many interests in my life; keeps it interesting and i learn a lot (i love learning in case you didn't know)

  6. I do, however actually buy physical books by glaze makers because it is often the only way I can show some concrete appreciation for their immense generosity in sharing their knowledge. #pottery #ceramics #glaze

  7. One of the most fantastic tools I have found online is the Glazy.org calculator that can compare between a successful glaze and one you are trying to reformulate.

This is very helpful when it comes to adjusting a glaze for local ingredients. #pottery #ceramics #glaze

  8. Today I am doing some glaze experiments using Mary Fox's beautiful Earthenware base glazy.org/recipes/798944

I have had to do a bit of improvising, changing the feldspar, adding a little silica and iron oxide, etc, and also done some tests with the addition of ilmenite and manganese dioxide.

But most of all, I want to see how the glaze interacts with a iron oxide stripe on the lips of the cups, both over and under. #pottery #ceramics #glaze

  9. Received the 2 ft / 600 mm long ceramics tubes from the factory. They are amazing! The thinnest is 2 mm outer diameter and has two 0.25 mm channels for the thermocouple wire. Perfectly straight, if you look straight in the hole you can see the back table.

Used with type K or type C thermocouple wire to make some temperature sensors for the 2500 deg F to 3500 deg F range

  10. I did an interview with VoyageTampa that went live a couple of days ago. I talk about my journey with clay beginning in 2013 and included some hopeful tidbits for artists beginning their careers including how to access lessons for free and how to build a lasting base of collectors.

My apologies—the article is ad pop-up city. I use Kagi and it wouldn’t load so I had to view it in a different browser.

    Fingers crossed!

  12. No, I'm not refusing to believe summer is over, really. In my neck of the woods, the farmers market bounty still screams SUMMER!

Made a Japanese fusion salad with ripe tomato, peach and corn, with shiso leaves and slivers of ginger, plus good vinegar, EVOO, salt & pepper. Served in a stoneware bowl I made with three glazes in a pinwheel pattern - not that you can see much of it. 😜

  13. I hope that showing my test tiles—including those strange, unexpected, sometimes undesirable results—gives you a window into what it takes to produce a piece like this that turns out just as intended.

Each section of the surface began as a test tile that I may have had to tweak or troubleshoot. The form and details required evolution over time. And from here, the work continues to grow and change. I wonder what the pots I’ll be making in another decade will look like?

  14. @potterybyosa that black is *glorious* though! I have a little project of ceramic jewellery where I would've loved to have black terra sig - I think the black clay that we do have in Australia is just the usual with additions, not a natural color.
What caused the cracking, do you think? Application? Differences between clay + sig? What might you do differently?
I do have a copy of ceramic faults + their remedies kicking about - better read up!

  15. I knew my mug handles were way off, but didn't know how to approach handle design. This fantastic breakdown of aesthetics and function gave me the basic understanding I needed to start refining them, from leverage and torque to friction and pressure: oldforgecreations.co.uk/blog/m

In the photo, left is before, right is after. It's night and day how they balance when you hold them.

(They also use the same glaze combo, just different amounts.)

  24. I started with another Ringling College of Art student a couple of weeks ago. They don’t have a #ceramics program at their school so whenever a student approaches me with an interest in #clay, I provide a free 6 week studio intensive where they get the entire experience from beginning to end—forming pieces, making their own slips & glazes, and firing. #education #skillshare #communityed #communityeducation

  25. Visited with students and gave slide talks two days ago- and pulled tubes with some very talented students yesterday. Gonna give another demo for UW glassblowing students today.

It's like my birthday came early with the tubes. Gonna make a video at some point to share the glassblowing fun- but Amber Mans an Skye Xollo were SO helpful, with Amber having blown glass since they were very young, and learning to pull tubes from my favorite tube puller in Tacoma.

I saw wonderful undergrad and graduate student work, seen here are Amber's "two truths and a lie" tubes covered in black glass powder and resist sandblasted through (I pulled some of that black/ brown). A studio visit with Morgan, a third year grad student was very neat- their ceramic and neon sculptures playing with texture, dementia, memory, and structure- integrating the neon and clay quite nicely.

One of these cups cost more than my car.
