  1. A few months ago Claire van Damme a student from @designacademy Eindhoven visited the pottery here in Steyl and she made these pictures. It's always nice to see the pottery from someone elses perspective.

  3. This is what the mugs look like after trimming, adding some decorative details, lettering, and handles. These are the limited edition portal mugs that were one of the rewards for backing my kickstarter earlier this summer.

  5. I know it's not much in the grand scheme of things but I've been working since May to be able to reproduce these Mother's frosted animal crackers in clay and glass and this morning I nailed it! Shirley Temple on repeat over here right now!

I feel like no one wants to hear an artist complains about the flaws in their work, and this has one or two, but overall it's exactly what I was aiming for. Now on to the next phase, which is putting these lil guys on functional objects.

  7. The inaugural bisque firing turned out very nicely. #ceramics #pottery

I was playing around with unpolished terra sig on the outside, and some white engobe on the inside, just to see how things would go.

I must say, it was both quick and relatively easy, considering this is the very first time I've fired anything on my own.

  11. Update on my first bisque firing: It was a bit clunky to program, and I used a very slow climb because it's been so humid here, I wanted to make sure everything was thoroughly dried out, but even with a 60 minute hold at boiling point, and a 30 minute hold at 120C - the bisquing was finished in about 2.5 hours.

Now it's cooling down. It drops by about 1 degree a second - so also pretty fast. All 100% on solar power, with other shit running.

    Damn, but I'm impressed! #ceramics #Pottery

  13. So I took the plunge and bought one of those little Vevor mini-kilns so that I could test out the glazes I plan on working on at home in August, since my ceramics studio is closed for the holidays for part of it.

I've designed these tiny test tiles to see how the glazes behave.

  15. I did a thing! Got back on the wheel for the 1st time since my hand injury on July 4th & tendon & nerve repair July 15th. This isn't as reckless as it might appear. I am a retired PT & understand the healing process. Plus, i have this cool assistive device that helps me center the clay without having to overuse my hands. And doing the pulls doesn't need my left pinky. :)

And I only did a little bit.

  17. Happy Place

Today is August 1st. One year ago, she'd been awake for a month. The first thing that changed was music. I signed up for a music app so she could listen to whatever she wanted — before that, I'd gotten out of the habit of listening to almost anything. Audiobooks in the car, headphones at home, nothing that asked anything of me. Now I dance in the apartment, in the car, moving to whatever she picks. Not full-on dancing in public yet, but close. I sing at home even when I don't know the […]

  19. Herman Melville, writer of the epic novel 'Moby Dick' was born on this day in 1819.
The book about the chase of a mythical white whale is not just about whaling. The book is also about a multi cultural society and gender equallity, ecology and an energy crisis and a maniacal leader who is blinded by his own madness.

  21. Melting glass beads onto fired clay is one of my favorite techniques. Until Tuesday I was sticking them on with white glue and firing them horizontally, which is necessary because the glue burns off long before the glass melts. I did the first five columns of this one at a time, propping the mug up in the kiln so that the column was horizontal.

But then on Monday I bought some sodium silicate at the ceramics store. It's a very high temperature liquid glass to glass adhesive (among other things). I used it to stick on all the rest of the beads plus some fancy stuff on the handle, and this is the result!

The only drawback is that it doesn't fire into the glaze at glass melting temperatures and leaves a kind of hard clear scum that's fired enough to be irremovable. At first I was painting a stripe of sodium silicate and placing the beads onto it because that's how I did the white glue, but it's noticable after firing (although I couldn't get a picture which shows it) then I learned to dip each bead into the sodium silicate and stick it on so that it all stays under the bead, which works great!

Did you know that the Japanese call engobe or slip 'make-up'?

I've been too productive today. I need alcohol.

  31. Playing with handles! #WIPWednesday

The mugs themselves turned out quite simple, so I wanted to get a bit more adventurous with the handles. The last one is inspired by the flower-shaped clouds in SpongeBob. 🌝
