  1. Yesterday the weather was so nice so I decided to improve my 30m antenna. I put up a 3/8 wl. vertical made of aluminium tube and installed 16 radials.

    I haven’t had too much time to compare it to my other antennas yet but the first impression is that it performs very well.

  6. This is the antenna tower for the radio station WKXJ in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
    They have large satellite antennas around back, but those are down in a dip.
    I have no idea what I’m looking at here. It was just an eighth of a mile from a destination of mine up there, so I decided to swing by and take a look.

  7. For those following along with the open source conformal method of moments wire #antenna project Arcanum, the current status as of today is:

    Phase 1 complete and merged. Geometry discretization, junction semantics corrected, helix parse tests added.

    Phase 2 docs fully approved. All three math blockers resolved, near-singular quadrature derived, perpendicular frame construction proved, citations corrected.

  8. Because I never did learn to stop digging when I was in a hole, I’m giving serious thought to getting one of Ed Fong’s DBJ-2 roll up antennas. I thought about building one, but since I can order one at cost plus shipping that seems like the way to go.
    Is anybody familiar with this antenna?

    (144-148 MHz and 440-450 MHz)

  9. Extending the range of the gate remote was more complicated than i thought. They make aftermarket add on antennas for the liftmaster receiver. Unfortunately they operate at 433MHz. The liftmaster operates at 310, 340, and 390. Doesn’t help much. I considered making my own dipole, then i found a cool tunable antenna. Its larger (much) than the little add on ones, but tuned to 350 it works much better. #antenna #geek

  19. New #antenna was delivered late yesterday.

    It's in the style of an mfj 1899t, with a telescoping vertical element and a loading coil with a jumper.

    It sort of works.

    It's nearly impossible to get a reasonable SWR on by following the instructions, but I can get it kind of close and then finish it off with the ATU. Seems like it desperately needs a counterpoise, though, since just touching the body of the radio changes the tuning significantly. I was able to listen to a little SSB on 20 and 40m and decode some FT8, but trying to respond would reset my USB connection.

    So far, I'm not impressed, even for a compromise antenna. I'll try messing with it a bit more after work, though. Maybe it can be saved.
