So, I helped Britt out with moving her instance to a new server provider this week.

While the people at toot.io were relatively helpful in our email chain (once she was finally able to get a hold of them in the first place anyways), the setup at toot.io was a bit strange and not optimized for an instance of her size. The actual server itself was well *over*powered for her to be seeing the slowdowns she was, and Mastodon & especially Postgres just weren’t using those resources to a full extent.

Honestly the biggest red flag 🚩🚩🚩 to me isn’t what toot.io is doing now necessarily, but that it was apparently sold(?) to completely new management without notice to customers. In a niche service industry like this, that seems like a big problem to me, to not even explain who’s taking over and why you should trust them.

The previous ownership is probably more at fault for this relatively speaking, but it’s probably a good opportunity for toot.io customers to reevaluate their hosting options… Even if you ultimately end up sticking with toot.io, you simply might not be fully aware of what’s going on over at your own hosting company anymore, and that’s always worth double-checking 👀

Dang, the #pixelfed instance I joined recently is shutting down at the end of next month. I was seemingly able to migrate my account to another instance, but that doesn't actually copy over any of my posts or anything. I haven't posted much but it'll be a hassle to manually re-make those posts...

Anyone using @mastohost to host their own instance on their own subdomain?

I've been giving zirk(.)us $5/month and MastoHost's solo plan is only $1 more, so it's a very tempting option vs. trying to find a new instance and hoping for the best.

NOTE: I don't have the technical ability nor interest in going full DIY, so no recommendations needed for that angle.

After taking a sabbatical, I returned to find witches.live inaccessible. Apparently, it's been down for about as long I've been gone, with no notice to its members, and no sign that it'll ever re-awaken. Lucky for me, I had little presence there. But for regulars, losing the ability to transfer their accounts must be devastating.

I'm here now... wearier of niche servers.

So... I'm wanting to move instances back to mastodon.gamedev.place
However, when I try to create an alias from there back to this account I get the error "could not be found".

I'm guessing this is some issue with the fork of calckey my current instance uses?

I'm a bit concerned that this issue will force me semi-start over.
What are my options? Are there any workarounds?

Migrated account to hachyderm.io.

First migration, pretty easy and it works well.

Only issue I’ve had is that lists can’t be imported/transferred …?

If so, it kinda tracks with lists not seeming like a mature feature yet. Which is a shame because it feels like it’d be a simple script to consume the exported lists CSV and apply it to a new account.

Similarly, followed hashtags are gone too …?

One key design flaw of Mastodon is that you cannot copy across posts from one instance to another when you migrate servers.

As such, I'm having to manually repost certain posts, so that they're not lost to the void when Mastodon.lol shuts down forever.

n00b Question Time:

I'm looking at my recently-migrated-to InfoSec.Exchange profile, and I feel like I'm missing something. I have successfully transferred most components of my profile, such as Bookmarks, Followers, etc.

But what I don't know how to transfer over are my Lists, where I had organized those I Follow into various interest-based categories.

Is there a way to manage this, without manually recategorizing and recreating all of my lists from scratch? I tried to the right thing when migrating: I downloaded a .csv of my lists from my old instance, but when I upload it in the Import interface of my new instance, my Lists here remain empty.

I have tried this a small handful of times now, and allowed time, days and days, in fact, in case it just needed to process; There was a message that appeared, saying that the information would be processed in due time, or something to that effect.
