Given that they've been around for a while now, what's the general verdict on quoots?
My timeline has been clean of people who deal in snarky remarks or cheap dunks for a while now, so my experience is heavily skewed. 😅

CW: masto meta post about BridgyFed, tech query
Anyone know why:
https://social.coop/search?q=%40da5nsy.bsky.social%40bsky.brid.gy+
doesn't work, but:
https://social.coop/search?q=%40da5nsy.bsky.social
does?

CW: Bluesky, Fedi, and Community Building/Moderation
I'm still pretty upset that furries largely chose Bluesky over Fedi, and Bluesky's decision to start haphazardly banning babyfurs is the main reason why. :drgn_thinking: Bluesky doesn't understand the intricacies of furries to moderate them, especially our various subcultures. The benefit of Mastodon et al. is that the servers are managed by people from your subculture.
A lot of my reservations about Bluesky being a Twitter 2.0 were hand-waved away because ATProto (the protocol Bluesky is built on) is federated like ActivityPub (the protocol the Fediverse/Mastodon is built on). ATProto is federated, yes, but it's not a protocol that promotes community-building like ActivityPub does. ATProto is a workbench for building out large monolithic social networks, instead of the tapestry of communities that make up the Fediverse. ATProto seems to focus on individual data sovereignty, while the Fediverse is focused on community sovereignty. Unfortunately, yes, that makes the Fediverse a little harder to use than ATProto AppViews, but ultimately I think it's worth it.
I dunno. I've rambled about this kind of thing a lot of times in the past, sorry I keep bringing it up. :soft_shrug: Just something I enjoy thinking about.

CW: Mastodon STF Proposals
I'm really leery of the new blocklist sharing feature being proposed as part of Masotdon's Sovereign Tech Agency funding. While I'm excited Mastodon is receiving an STF grant, blocklist abuse has been a recurring issue and I'm not eager to see it codified in the admin interface.
For those that weren't here a few years back, Mastodon has a pretty ugly history with blocklists. They've been repeatedly used to block sex positivity, kink, and LGBTQ+ content. While I agree there are a lot of really bad servers on the Fediverse, I'm nervous that blocklist sharing will lead to the same kinds of censorship we saw a few years back. Plus, and no shade to the people who use it, but the Fediblock hashtag has a lot of posts from people who operate on little to no proof of their claims, or who just want to abuse it.
To be totally honest though, my hangup with blocklists comes from the fact that CubHub still has to deal with being suspended by a lot of servers from a bad blocklist. We were wrongfully flagged because someone didn't bother to check our About page that clearly states we do not allow porn of under-age characters, because stupid people think "cub" automatically means cub porn. :blobfoxdisapprove: It doesn't.
So yeah, I dunno. The other proposals look interesting, and, while I've never been one to think we really need E2EE on private messages and who thought it'd just introduce a lot of friction for users, I'm not opposed to it if they can get the UX of it working well.

So if you pop onto Mastodon and catch up some, how do you do it?
Boost for reach, if you would - I'm actually curious about this. I've been reordering toot chains when boosting for ages based on something I don't even know is true.
-
I really need to get off my lazy ass and write an acceptable upload policy with more robust content warning guidelines, but I'm not exactly sure how or where to post an AUP page on Mastodon. :blobfoxmeltsob: I don't want it to dominate the (already admittedly too long) About page.

Mastodon feature request:
Filters should work on trending article headlines
https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/37816
Filters automatically hide posts from Mastodon users that contain the words you're filtering for.
This feature should work on articles on the /explore/links page, too.
If you agree, please click through to Github using the link above and add your 👍 at the bottom of the first post. You'll need a Github account, so if you don't have/want one, please boost instead.
-
My top tip for getting into Mastodon is:
1) Make a post that says "hi, I'm interested in..." followed by like 10 hashtags about your interests.
2) Click and follow all the hashtags in your post.
3) People will boost your post and it'll go further because of the hashtags, due to the nature of the fediverse. Follow all the people who boost you; you can unfollow later if it's too many people.

What happens if you boost a toot from a Mastodon server that has gone offline (perhaps forever)? Does it work as normal, unless you try to visit the original website? Or do weird things break?
Below I will link to the test toot (that is currently unreachable). Next I will boost it.

@alberto_cottica It's one of many such recommender systems introduced in Mastodon v4, see https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/18128 #FediMeta #MastoMeta

Today I had to unfollow someone because they posted a link to an article and a word I had filtered was in the article preview (but not the post text or the link URL), which was frustrating and sad.
Here is a feature request/bug report on the Mastodon Github issue list asking that filters also be applied to preview cards of links in posts:
https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/32940
Add a thumbs-up or a comment to the Github issue if you also want this to be fixed! :) (If you don't have an account but still want it to be fixed, maybe a boooost? 🚀)

I'm migrating the Gender Census account from @[email protected] to @[email protected] and I have to say, it is going much smoother than last time I tried to migrate accounts on Mastodon. :)
Nice one, developers!

Just did a quick and dirty spreadsheet to find out what percentage of instances and users are on Mastodon 4.4 (pre-quote-posts) and 4.5 (quote-posts), and it's like this:
4.4 (pre-quote-posts): 29.7% of instances, 9.1% of users.
4.5 (quote-posts, but not yet): 1.2% of instances, 11.0% of users.Source data: https://instances.social/list/old

Wish I could subscribe to a thread – like get a notification when the OP of a thread adds to it, just like you can choose to get notifications on an account or a hashtag.

Aperiodic reminder that on the Fediverse, we are the algorithm. Different people use it for different purposes!
Readers can hide posts based on content, but the content need to be there on the poster's side. Here's what I ask of you:
- Speaking about a contentious or heated topic? Hashtag it.
- Speaking about a specific individual? Mention them if they're here, or use the common name for public figures. Do not exclusively use pet names or derogatories. You can use those too if you want, just make sure you have the actual name somewhere in the post.
- Heck, just always over-hashtag!
Please continue posting what you care about, I'm only asking you keep the options open for me. 😃 I can mute accounts that only post about topics I don't want, but that's unfair for people who mix it up.

Anyone got recommendations for #mastodon/ #fediverse servers which focus on #FOSS but recognise it as inherently political and celebrate the way it intersects with other activist communities?
Context: lots of folks seem to be feeling like #fosstodon has shown it doesn't align with their values, but I don't know where to recommend as an alternative.

If your list of filtered keywords is very long, this Mastodon feature request may interest you:
Move "Add keyword" and save button in "Edit filter" above keywords

Oh hey instance admins, if you have rules against misinformation and/or spam - would you consider adding AI slop to your definitions thereof?
Edit: I am not using "AI slop" to refer to anything generated by AI. I'm using the definition that's described by its Wikipedia page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AI_slop
Low quality, often nonsense, used as clickbait or to sell dross or to make money from advertising, etc. You know, spam or misinformation but made by an LLM or image diffusion thing to make money for lazy humans with no morals.
-
Mastodon also gives you the ability to hide boosts from any account, so that if someone you enjoy following starts boosting un-CW'd politics into your feed, you don't need to go all the way to unfollowing them.
Oh, and CamelCase your hashtags so that screen readers read them properly.
-
Which style of filter appearance do you prefer from the screenshots in the previous post?

I complained about BlueSky a little so I'm gonna balance it out by saying that Mastodon's federation options suck and we need a way to boot remote servers off of our federated timeline and hashtag lookup without outright silencing every single person on that server. :neodog__w_:

Fediverse is a bad name. I officially propose we call ourselves something cool like the Federation :crow_salute:
Make your own suggestions though. :blobcorgi_excited: I wanna see what the brilliant minds of the Federation propose.

Closing in on 2 years on Mastodon!
Thanks for the connections, the conversations, and being a decent person.
Hope to meet more of you soon!

#TIL about https://fediverse.info/explore/people, a directory of #Fedi users. It's super quick and easy to add yourself, just add #fedi22 hashtag and any other topic hashtags you want to your bio and then click the "Add Account" button to opt in to the directory. No login required.

I like responding to people's Fedi posts so they feel like others are engaging since Fedi is definitely a lot smaller than, like, Twitter. I don't want them to think it's a ghost town here. Sometimes I wonder if I'm annoying though. :corgi_wtf1:
(Not to say I only do it because I want people to feel engaged with, I way prefer to use social media to talk to people instead of only thumbing up their posts. :blobfoxcute: )

There's a lot to say about the new #Mastodon version but the most impactful change for me so far is the new boost icon. It now visibly changes when pressed, while previously it would barely change colour/thickness, a difference often too subtle to notice on screens with low constrast/brightness.

@HeavenlyPossum Maybe they come from the Mastodon explore page/suggestions to follow popular accounts? Interesting to see how that changes with the new release (if you saw it happen more often with mastodon.social and mastodon.online accounts until yesterday, it might be because they were on 4.3 months earlier).
