  1. CW: Bluesky, Fedi, and Community Building/Moderation

I'm still pretty upset that furries largely chose Bluesky over Fedi, and Bluesky's decision to start haphazardly banning babyfurs is the main reason why. Bluesky doesn't understand the intricacies of furries to moderate them, especially our various subcultures. The benefit of Mastodon et al. is that the servers are managed by people from your subculture.

A lot of my reservations about Bluesky being a Twitter 2.0 were hand-waved away because ATProto (the protocol Bluesky is built on) is federated like ActivityPub (the protocol the Fediverse/Mastodon is built on). ATProto is federated, yes, but it's not a protocol that promotes community-building like ActivityPub does. ATProto is a workbench for building out large monolithic social networks, instead of the tapestry of communities that make up the Fediverse. ATProto seems to focus on individual data sovereignty, while the Fediverse is focused on community sovereignty. Unfortunately, yes, that makes the Fediverse a little harder to use than ATProto AppViews, but ultimately I think it's worth it.

I dunno. I've rambled about this kind of thing a lot of times in the past, sorry I keep bringing it up. :soft_shrug: Just something I enjoy thinking about.

  6. CW: Mastodon STF Proposals

I'm really leery of the new blocklist sharing feature being proposed as part of Masotdon's Sovereign Tech Agency funding. While I'm excited Mastodon is receiving an STF grant, blocklist abuse has been a recurring issue and I'm not eager to see it codified in the admin interface.

For those that weren't here a few years back, Mastodon has a pretty ugly history with blocklists. They've been repeatedly used to block sex positivity, kink, and LGBTQ+ content. While I agree there are a lot of really bad servers on the Fediverse, I'm nervous that blocklist sharing will lead to the same kinds of censorship we saw a few years back. Plus, and no shade to the people who use it, but the Fediblock hashtag has a lot of posts from people who operate on little to no proof of their claims, or who just want to abuse it.

To be totally honest though, my hangup with blocklists comes from the fact that CubHub still has to deal with being suspended by a lot of servers from a bad blocklist. We were wrongfully flagged because someone didn't bother to check our About page that clearly states we do not allow porn of under-age characters, because stupid people think "cub" automatically means cub porn. :blobfoxdisapprove: It doesn't.

So yeah, I dunno. The other proposals look interesting, and, while I've never been one to think we really need E2EE on private messages and who thought it'd just introduce a lot of friction for users, I'm not opposed to it if they can get the UX of it working well.

  7. I really need to get off my lazy ass and write an acceptable upload policy with more robust content warning guidelines, but I'm not exactly sure how or where to post an AUP page on Mastodon. :blobfoxmeltsob: I don't want it to dominate the (already admittedly too long) About page.

  8. I complained about BlueSky a little so I'm gonna balance it out by saying that Mastodon's federation options suck and we need a way to boot remote servers off of our federated timeline and hashtag lookup without outright silencing every single person on that server. :neodog__w_:

  9. Fediverse is a bad name. I officially propose we call ourselves something cool like the Federation :crow_salute:

Make your own suggestions though. :blobcorgi_excited: I wanna see what the brilliant minds of the Federation propose.

  10. I like responding to people's Fedi posts so they feel like others are engaging since Fedi is definitely a lot smaller than, like, Twitter. I don't want them to think it's a ghost town here. Sometimes I wonder if I'm annoying though. :corgi_wtf1:

(Not to say I only do it because I want people to feel engaged with, I way prefer to use social media to talk to people instead of only thumbing up their posts. :blobfoxcute: )

  11. I think there needs to be a mastodon function that mutes news stuff you follow in the federated TL, but also one to mute news altogether.

I'm finding that as more news sources start to use the fedi, they flood everything for how often they post. I can barely see any actual people anymore

  12. CW: Fediverse Meta, Complaining about Mastodon Defed Options (Again)

So apparently Authorized Fetch does, in fact, work with user-level blocks. :blobfoxthinkgoogly: With that being the case, why doesn't Mastodon have a defederation option where users have an instance blocked by default, but can choose to opt back into federation?

It'd be a really good way to protect user privacy with services like Threads (which doesn't support Authorized Fetch anyway, but still), without it being an outright defederation. With all the bemoaning of Fedi blocking Threads, it seems like that would've been the proper solution instead of telling server admins to suck it up and fork over all of their users' data. Also, for the record, CubHub has Threads blocked, and even if they didn't, they'd block us anyway since we allow porn (and not cub porn ya knobs).

It'd also be a better mechanism for dealing with bridges between here and BlueSky or Nostr, instead of demanding that the creators of those bridges build in their own opt-in mechanism instead, which still feels incredibly unreasonable to me when that features should be built into Mastodon.

  18. Is the "Admins can read your DMs" thing seriously trending again? :corgi_wtf1: How many times is this gonna come up? The same way that Telegram, Twitter, FurAffinity, etc can all read your DMs, Fediverse admins can read your DMs if they go manually traverse the database for some insane reason. That warning when you start a DM isn't just there for show. I personally don't want to have a heavily limited and compromised social network that forces you to pass around encryption keys just to use it, so please just use a secure service like Signal or Matrix if you want to pass along sensitive messages.

  19. Since #Mastodon is planning to change the name of the #Unlisted #visibility into "Low-key public" and this will affect like a million #fediverse users out there, I'm curious what you currently think about the name of this visibility setting.

Do you think "Unlisted" is clear enough right now, and should it be changed (and if so, to what)?

  20. There’s an amazing plethora of apps that make using this platform amazing, and I am happy to have paid for quite a few.

I wonder if the next major frontier is interfacing with donations to the supporting the server and mastodons development. I have several friends who thought paying a subscription to an app meant they were also supporting their instance and masto API development… I hope app developers make that a reality someday!

Are there other iOS clients people like that are up to date on accessibility features?

  22. It needs to get easier to select the language you're posting in — and especially to remember to change it when you should!

I propose a feature to set multiple languages, and having a drop down on the Post button

Clicking the button directly sends the post in your default language, while clicking the drop down gives you options to post in your other languages. Clicking one of the options from the drop down posts in that language with no further action
