@davidruffner Friendship can be elusive wherever you look, and a network like this is pretty large and pretty public. I guess the closest I have to Fedi friends are largely people I met in person (for example at the events organized by my geographically focused instance) and/or where we had some other common interest/experience, such as having been on the #MastodonLOL server when that was around.

not sure if I got this right on the #mastodonlol saga but seems like the early shutdown and all its consequences (people needing to pack up and seek a new home, accounts not migrating on time and losing followers, network loss in the diaspora...) are a direct consequence of the great Twittermigration, giving some servers that kept registration open and didn't scale moderation teams a hug of death...

So, what exactly happens when an instance shuts down? Do other servers automatically delete their cache of this instance's data, after a certain period of time? And if so, how long would that typically take?

The server mastodon.lol seems to have shut down for good, about 5 days earlier than had been announced.

It won't be possible to migrate from old accounts with the server offline, but if you or somebody you know from the server would be a good fit for sunny.garden, registrations are open.

@mike Uh this is a good guide for moving servers in general but since mastodon.lol isn't up (and apparently won't be up again) the steps which refer to the old server won't work. But one thing which might work: use the #MastodonLOL hashtag to find people you used to follow or answer any questions you might have. A few of us are hanging out there trying to help as we are able.

Mastodon.lol might have gone down a few days early? It was due to shut its doors on the 9th of May, but it seems to be down for the count already.

Yet looking through our logs, there were still lots of active users on there...

@davidslifka @nova Admin burnout is definitely an issue. I'm more familiar with the #MastodonLOL case than this one which seems odd because Kris Nóva did set up a team but I guess that wasn't enough?

Damn, #mastodonlol is really closed now. This feels surreal (even though it was announced).

I better do a new #introduction as I'm new here on tech.lgbt. I'm part of the #mastodonlol diaspora, I was only there a couple of months but I really liked the vibe and I'm sad it didn't work out.

I'm a British front-end developer but my work isn't my main interest in life any more. People ask what happened at #MastodonLOL . I will try to summarize as I know it. This instance dates from 2020 or so and had about 2000 users until November 2022 when it shot up as high as 70,000. The admin, Nathan, ran it by himself (with the exception of some moderation help for a while he declined to form a team on the grounds that users had trusted him with their data, not others he might bring in). 1/3

@thelaughingmuse Fair, probably for the same reason I still follow the #MastodonLOL hashtag. I guess it is nostalgia or some sense of affinity with the rest of the mastodonlol diaspora or something, but no regrets.
