I was recently thinking again in a post (https://quasselkopf.de/users/kranzkrone/statuses/116903442436234586) about shutting down my Mastodon instance and, as a result, logging out of the Fediverse. 🙄
Because using someone else’s instance just isn’t an option for me!After that, I gave it some more thought and once again came to the realization, and found the explanation, for why I still run my own Mastodon instance.
I’m particular about how I communicate, partly because I’ve often experienced exclusion in the past, and that happens even faster in the digital space than in real life.
That’s why I manage my hosting independently as much as possible, so that I can be as independent as possible with my projects (blog/Mastodon/etc.), in other words, so that I have digital sovereignty! ‼️

It’s disingenuous of you to bring in a non-sequitur (Epstein affair) into this conversation.If the purpose of someone who, for whatever reason, decides to stand up an #instance on the #fedi is to make it a financially viable enterprise, then good luck to them because they are likely to fail. There is no #BusinessCase to support this.
It is my observation that most, if not all, instances are stood up from the perspective of idealism. The ideal that an internet #Agora can and should flourish in order to put #Grifting and #Toxic platforms out of business (along with all other Fedi ideals I commented on earlier). It is entirely #voluntary, i.e. not remunerated.
The fedi will live or die by the good nature of its hosts and supporters.
ERGO: #Donate what you can, when you can, to you host instance folks. The #InternetAgora depends on it. If you cannot afford it, support the #Fediverse and praise its lofty goals in your loudest voice.

I moved our mastodon #instance to #ReliableSite and after one month of service they announced that they suddenly need to increase the cost of our dedicated server from $20 a month to $50. They claim the post of replacement parts has gone up so they must pass that cost on to others. I am beyond pissed. Now I have to find another dedicated server and migrate again for the third time in 3 months!
This is why #mastodon is not better embraced by people.

I'm starting to realise that the fediverse works best when you use diffrent instances for diffrent things, I now have Loops for video, and Bookwyrm for books and reading.
My question is what's the best instance for posting hiking photos, or just photos in general?

Public FediSuite instances can now register themselves directly from the admin panel into the official instance directory on fedisuite.com. Anyone running a self hosted instance who wants to open it up for new users can do so with just a few clicks. Listed are name, URL, user count and join date. Voluntary, transparent and removable at any time.
This way a real directory grows over time, where people can see where to sign up without having to set up Docker and run their own instance. The official instance and fedi.adminforge.de are leading the way.
If you want to be part of it, just update and register through the admin panel.

Fediverse Suggestions Required :
Apart from long text posts, I would like to share photos & videos. So far no issues with short / threaded text, & pictures, but with videos anything over 50 -60 mb seems to stall on upload (via an android phone)
Wondering if I need another instance. Or a separate tool for images & videos (pixelfed) & or use another type of fediverse instance.
+ how to ensure I stay connected with those who i follow, & those who follow me

Il paraît que pour bien profiter de Mastodon, il faut rejoindre une "instance". J'en ai cherché une sur https://instances.social/ : si possible une instance destinée aux amateurs d'arts et de musique ou aux artistes. Je n'ai rien trouvé qui m'inspire. Toute recommandation est la bienvenue.
