Finally I got SLURP to work. I nice tool where you can import your old Mastodon posts to GoToSocial, and backdate them to there original post date. However, there is a lot limitations so only around 1/3 posts were imported.

Mastodon should develop something like that too, so it is possible to keep your old posts when you move your profile. BlueSky and GoToSocial can, so why not Mastodon?

For my birthday today… I deleted the Facebook account I created in September to access Marketplace. It served its purpose. I was going to sell other things but never got around to it. Then friends started requesting to be friends. It was awkward. I didn’t accept any requests and even made one post on my profile that I wouldn’t be friending anyone.. that it was only for Marketplace. People still requested…

Then a colleague/friend passed away and I missed an RSVP because someone sent me the message on FB rather than real life even though we weren’t FB connected and hadn’t communicated on there for years. This is what happens when people treat FB like the entirety of “the internet” and “communication”. I have a website with my name and phone! My address is not hard to search. Email!?

I was angry and sad about that. 😢

So ya… if I do the Marketplace thing again I’ll just make a temp account and delete it after use, like a single use plastic bag to pick up dog poop. 💩 🤣

In the meantime I’ll keep focusing on good people here on the #opensocialweb… and also connecting with people in real life.

Most of the 48 years I have spent on this earth have been without Facebook. I’ll manage :)

I just had an idea, I'd like to explore with you: We make campaigns with our walled garden friends where there's a list they can sign vouching that "If all the others on this list move to the Fediverse, then I will too". Every time a new person signs it, it can potentially be the small difference that makes another person sign it too, and so on. Each campaign is local to a community and has a deadline: "We move this date". You finish with a celebration. #fedimigration #mastodonmigration #fedi

A friend of mine is interested in getting a Fedi-account and I promised to send her server suggestions. The thing is that there a few things that a good server for her should provide:

- She has relatively serious aspirations to become a politician for the Dutch socialist party, so the server should probably not be super strict about banning campaigning for progressive political parties.
- Anti-electorialist servers are thus probably not really an option
- She has indicated that she might want to do some posting in Dutch, so ideally it should be possible to select the language of a post on a per-post basis (aka: As much as I love Sharkey, it doesn’t really offer that right now). Translation-support on the server would thus also be a plus, even though she is completely fluent in English.
- Knowing her, she might want to post NSFW-content, so the server should be fine with that, as long as it happens behind content-warnings.
- She is a member of various minority-groups (trans, poly, Sinti, and those are just some of the ones she is public about…) so firm moderation of hate-speech is kinda a must.
- She doesn’t really have any form of tech-background

Were it not for the last point (and my disagreement about the upcoming defederation from woem.men) I’d probably recommend tech.lgbt, because I’d prefer to point her somewhere reasonably large (1k users), which I might do anyways, but I’d be interested in other suggestions.

I'll probably also mention blahaj.zone, but the limited support of differing languages that Sharkey has right now, makes this not the greatest option and I’m also not sure how happy Ada would be with moderating Dutch posts…

If you add @Flipboard and sum it up wit #Mastodon (because #Fediverse 😉), then #Facebook ist not far.

My #Fediverse migration!

As mentioned in a previous post, I had created this account to move from my previous mastodon account. I'm done with the migration now.

Here are a couple of reasons for my migration.

1. My #mastodon instance was too restrictive with the character count (500 chars), I know that was a specific instance issue, but I wanted a place which allowed more characters, so that I could write a longish post without worrying about the char count (like this one!)
2. I found mastodon being a bit too restrictive from a feature perspective. Things like reactions, text formatting etc. are a need of the day for making your posts and reactions more meaningful.

I found #Iceshrimp supporting most these that I wanted, hence this move. However there are a couple of things that are still missing here.

1. The ability to auto-delete posts based on time.
2. The ability to follow #hashtags. I know there is an antenna feature, but haven't got to get it working properly.

As of the migration itself, it wasn't completely smooth. During my first attempt, while most of my followers got migrated I was stuck with a couple of dozen which didn't move on to the new instance. When I looked I found a few of those accounts or instances themselves didn't exist. I removed them and made another attempt to migrate, but that didn't help either. So here I'm without those missed out followers in this instance.

Other things like moving my follows, blocked and mute list etc.. was just as expected.

Anyway, hoping that another instance migration is not imminent and I'll hang around here for good amount of time.!

Any step one can make to move away from the domination of proprietary platforms, technologies and all kinds of billionaires and fascists, is a potentially good thing. Things might be confusing to you at first, as all change can be difficult. Things are definitely not perfect here either and the fediverse has its own set of problems, but there are many helpful and friendly communities here. I wish you that you find your people (and foxes, and cats etc)

I would also like to respectfully ask the people who moved here to refrain from calling yourself #TwitterRefugee or #RedditRefugee or anything like that. An alternative is simply saying that you left a certain platform, or moved away.
I would like to encourage you to learn more about what it is like to be a refugee, and if it is possible for you, consider donating to organizations that help refugees. One such example of an organization is: https://www.pah.org.pl/en/ukraine
Being a refugee is tied to a lot of harship and severe trauma, to put it mildly, and using this word to describe changing social media platforms is not adequate.

Saddened to find out today that apparently #Cohost, an indie nonprofit blogging site that was popular among artists, is shutting down. There was a lot of good content on there, and I know how it feels to see the place that you've been posting your thoughts and art for what could have been years suddenly evaporate, and for some people, I know it's just as they've been getting established there.

A shut down like this hurts everyone.

If anyone is coming over from co-host, or any other site that is going down, or a country like #Brasil / #Brazil that has banned your previous #SocialNetwork, or just needs help getting established on here in general, feel free to reach out to me. I am always an open volunteer for expanding the #Fediverse.

I also encourage anyone who has a Cohost account to go post on there to try and help the users find their way here.
