Camina Drummer from the series. Originally, Chief of Security on Tycho Station. In series this character is merged with the Michio Pa character in the books, the captain of a commune ship. Michio Pa is my favourite character in the books.

Naomi Nagata from the books. She is one of the main characters and engineer of the spaceship Rocinante. Clever and rational. She has a good sense of ethics and not naive like the character in the series.

Har de aldrig set en zombie-film? Det er den type spørgsmål, der kan være lidt ødelæggende for en historie, og for at være ærlig var det et spørgsmål, der dukkede op i mit hoved flere gange, især i første halvdel af Adrian Tchaikovskys “Shroud”. Blot i en lidt tilpasset version: har de aldrig læst en science fiction-roman?

For “Shroud” er så tydeligt en science fiction-roman, at man forventer lidt selvbevidsthed fra hovedpersonerne, da de nødlander på titlens sære måne. Den er helt sort, tyngdekraften er stor, og den er generelt bare ikke et godt sted at være menneske. Men de indledende undersøgelser viser, at der er liv på Shroud, sært liv. Liv, der oversvømmer hele radiospektret med støj. Og snart er der også menneskeliv, to styks, der styrter ned og skal forsøge at overleve et umuligt sted.

Og gennem det meste at romanen nægter at overveje, at det fremmede livs handlinger kunne være udtryk for en form for intelligens, som blot er … fremmed.

Måske bliver det hele så meget tydeligere af, at det er Tchaikovsky, der er forfatteren, og han har en forkærlighed for at skrive ikkemenneskelige bevidstheder. Så til tider forlader han vore to helte for at besøge den og de intelligenser, der hersker på Shroud. Og det er godt, for Tchaikovsky er god til det, han gør. Han leverer en overlevelseshistorie krydret med god spekulation, der bygger op til en spændende afslutning.

Men for at være ærlig føles det også som en bog, der kunne have været skrevet på 200 sider og have været sylespids. På trods af alt det gode endte jeg med at traske igennem midterstykket – ligesom hovedpersonerne i deres sonde trasker hen over Shroud – for vi ved jo godt, hvor det skal hen. Vi har læst en science fiction-roman før, selv om hovedpersonerne åbenbart ikke har. Heldigvis er destinationen god.
