The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) has published the updated proposal to restrict per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) under the EU’s chemicals regulation, REACH. The update has been prepared by the authorities from Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway and Sweden, who submitted the initial proposal in January 2023.

ECHA has added decamethyltetrasiloxane and heptamethyltrisiloxane for the list of substances of very high concern as these are very persistent and very bioaccumulative (vPvB). These substances are widely used in cosmetics for example, so please check INCI of your bottles.

It is totally insane to basically eliminate #NIOSH. It provided top quality data on how to maintain a #healthy (=productive!) workforce. It’s also worth noting that not only the 900 NIOSH staff were laid off. They also cut most external NIOSH programs. In total this brings several thousand highly qualified experts on the global job market.

Intentionally added #microplastics will be restricted within the EU in 20 days, with phased restrictions based on complexity to adapt. #Microbeads in cosmetics will be banned immediately, infill for sports pitches in 8 years, 4-12 years for other cosmetics.
