  1. I've just finished reading Voices in Time by Canadian author Hugh MacLennan. (Book cover image below) A synthesis of speculative and historical fiction published in 1980 and set in 2030 - after the destruction of Western civilization.
His story of the middle and late 20th century resonates eerily with events occurring today.
His characters are all too human.

  13. From Sir Thomas Browne to Seamus Heaney, the quincunx has been both a device and a structure in the English literary tradition. More than this, it has mathematical, agricultural, and mystical meanings from which, I believe, the literary use sprang.

Andre Alexis' use of the quincunx in his series of the same name seems to encompass all this in a challenging non-trivial way. Having read only the first and second books, Pastorale and Fifteen Dogs, I'm intrigued to explore further into the depth of the series.

If only the Ottawa Public Library offered digital copies, I'd be doing that now.

  19. Another great book from Canadian author Adam Shoaltz. In his newest book “where the falcon flies” he canoed and hiked from Lake Erie to the Artic (North of Labrador)

All his books are quite good if you’re into adventure stories and all his trips are within Canada which makes it even more amazing.

  20. COMING UP! on Earth Day Eve, April 21:
Enjoy stories and poems for a hopeful dystopia for the launch of the THROUGH THE PORTAL anthology, then stick around for Lynn Hutchinson Lee's haunted fens and vengeful water spirits. A bit of a mixed vibe but Earth needs everything we can give her right now.

  21. My wife loves Louise Penny’s books. She’ll love this statement from Penny as well:

“With that in mind, I am so sorry to say that until things change, I cannot do in-person events in the United States. Which means, for the first time in 20 years, not touring the USA. Please understand this decision is not meant to punish Americans. This is about standing shoulder-to-shoulder with my fellow Canadians.”

Edit to add: she loves it.

  27. So You Want to Write a Memoir? (1/4)

I presented at #WordVancouver on Saturday with fellow CAA authors Rosemary Keevil and Patrick McLaren. Our panel was ‘So You Want to Write a Memoir,’ and the audience was full of would-be memoirists. (I got a strong show of hands when I asked.)

The presentation went beautifully with readings from Patrick McLaren and Rosemary Keevil.

  32. Last week I had the absolute pleasure and honor to be able to document the Ottawa launch of the book 'The Letters: Postmarked Prejudice in Black and White'

Author Sheila White delivers a detailed presentation about struggles faced by her parents, a biracial couple from Nova Scotia during the 1940s

Her book is a captivating novel about their life and adventures as they moved throughout their life from the maritimes to Toronto. Her father William 'Billy' White, a talented musician and activist, eventually receiving the order of Canada in the 1970s.

A poignant discussion history of racism and prejudice in Canada.

A novella for the weekend! #Historical + #BodyHorror (I mean it! a lot of it!). Also both about healthcare and caregiving & their overlaps. The point of view really made me believe everything, had that tone exactly right.

  39. @TheAuthorGuy I’m currently reading Laughing with that Trickster by Tomson Highway. I’ve thought about you twice. Once (obviously) about Coyote Blue. Next: Lamb. In comparing North American indigenous myths to others in the world he opines that for everything you can say positive about Jesus, Highway has never heard evidence that he laughed (unlike his parallel Trickster). Thought about suggesting he read Lamb. #CanadianAuthors
