  1. What does legacy mean when the world is at a tipping point? On John Scalzi’s blog, Wendy Waring shares her Big Idea, tracing the journey that transformed The Hunger of Those Who Built It into a novel of climate crisis, sisterhood, & the worlds we build for those who follow.

  2. Publication day is here! Wendy Waring’s THE HUNGER OF THOSE WHO BUILT IT is now available everywhere books are sold. Good Reading calls it “seductively spellbinding” and declares, “Debuts aren’t supposed to be this good.” We couldn’t agree more.

  6. I've just finished reading Voices in Time by Canadian author Hugh MacLennan. (Book cover image below) A synthesis of speculative and historical fiction published in 1980 and set in 2030 - after the destruction of Western civilization.
His story of the middle and late 20th century resonates eerily with events occurring today.
His characters are all too human.

  7. The City & The City posted their 2025 bestsellers and we love to see a Stelliform book on the list! Also of note: the book is on the list because it is great, yes, but also because The City & The City read and loved it and recommended it and made it a bookclub feature. Indie bookstores are THE BEST.

  8. ICE meets The Lost World. (with a Northern Ontario safe zone)
In Inversion, simultaneous volcanic eruptions unleash a global freeze—and creatures that haven't walked the Earth in millions of years.
The cold is just the beginning.

  9. From Sir Thomas Browne to Seamus Heaney, the quincunx has been both a device and a structure in the English literary tradition. More than this, it has mathematical, agricultural, and mystical meanings from which, I believe, the literary use sprang.

Andre Alexis' use of the quincunx in his series of the same name seems to encompass all this in a challenging non-trivial way. Having read only the first and second books, Pastorale and Fifteen Dogs, I'm intrigued to explore further into the depth of the series.

If only the Ottawa Public Library offered digital copies, I'd be doing that now.

  12. Rose Lemay has given Canadian indigenous allies a place to start when we ask the question "What can I do?". After working with allies in both the civil service and the private sector, she has a unique, insightful perspective on the issues and ways forward.

  13. Garry Gottfriedsen and Victoria Handford are Canadian heroes in the search for genuine truth and reconciliation. Their book Dangling in the Glimmer of Hope is already a Canadian classic. Buy the book, read it, and pass it on. Even better, buy more than one and share widely.

  14. Otoniya J. Okot Bitek and Iryn Tushabe in conversation about their first novels - We: the Kindling and Everything Is Fine. Novels by Canadian women set in Uganda. Novels I now must read even though I already have too many books on my To Read list. Damn you Ottawa International Writer's Festival.

  16. Today's #canadianbooks by #canadianauthors are by well known, if not to say beloved, cooking luminaries.
Jehane Benoit is the Julia Child of Canada; a chef with many books to her name, including The Encyclopedia of Canadian Cooking, and my favourite, My Secrets for Better Cooking box set with Bonus Recipe Cards.
Jean Pare created a series of popular booklets of quick and easy recipes. The very first, 150 Delicious Squares (what Canadians call bar cookies), published in 1981, was such a success that the company is still thriving today. With 6 kids in the house, 30-minute Weekday Meals was a go-to for my mom.

  17. We had a blast last night at the Earth Day Eve launch of Through the Portal and The Origins of Desire in Orchid Fens. Lynn Hutchinson Lee even brought spring peepers with her to set the swampy vibe.

Orchid is now available everywhere books are sold! Congrats Lynn!

  19. Another great book from Canadian author Adam Shoaltz. In his newest book “where the falcon flies” he canoed and hiked from Lake Erie to the Artic (North of Labrador)

All his books are quite good if you’re into adventure stories and all his trips are within Canada which makes it even more amazing.

  20. Today's #canadianbooks by #canadianauthors are:
A Book of Ecological Virtues: Living Well in the Anthropocene, edited by Heesoon Bai et al. Please reserve judgement on the word "virtues" in the title of this book, and focus on the words "living well". These writers offer welcome reminders of the peaceful wholeness of human life that exists and can be nurtured. True workable optimism is rare in our times; this collection offers it on every page.
    Murdered Midas by Charlotte Gray.
According to the Globe and Mail "In this “engrossing must-read” by “Canada’s most accomplished popular historian” (Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine), the glittering life and brutal murder of Sir Harry Oakes is newly investigated. Murdered Midas is “superior true-crime writing”.

  21. COMING UP! on Earth Day Eve, April 21:
Enjoy stories and poems for a hopeful dystopia for the launch of the THROUGH THE PORTAL anthology, then stick around for Lynn Hutchinson Lee's haunted fens and vengeful water spirits. A bit of a mixed vibe but Earth needs everything we can give her right now.

  22. Today's #canadianbooks by #canadianauthors are some of my favourites by #MargaretAtwood. The first book I ever read by her was The Edible Woman, in which there are scenes I'll never forget. The Robber Bride is an unassuming slice of life I very much enjoyed. Alias Grace is a retelling of the Lizzy Borden story that succeeds, I think, in humanizing the protagonist and illuminating the possibilities of her situation. Enjoy!

  23. If you like your literary fiction with gorgeous prose and more than a touch of horror, grab Lynn Hutchinson Lee's ORIGINS OF DESIRE IN ORCHID FENS. There are just 6 review copies left on Book Sirens!

The book is also currently on Netgalley, till the end of the month.

  24. @Lynnd @alan @vernilla @bookstodon

Great idea! I'll try to post once a week with #canadianwriters #canadianbooks I've enjoyed, starting with my most recent favourite VenCo by Cherie Dimaline. Magical realism that made me laugh out loud.

  25. @Lynnd @alan @vernilla @bookstodon Two of my favourite #CanadianWriters who have produced many wonderful #CanadianBooks are Wayne Johnston and Guy Vanderhaeghe. Both are prolific but Johnston's The Mystery of Right and Wrong is exceptional as is Vanderhaeghe's August Into Winter.

  26. Has a hashtag developed for Canadian Writers yet? Both #CanadianBooks and #CanadianWriters seem to have zero posts and my surveillance of Dark Side Social Media indicates that for some totally unknown reason, there's been a sudden upsurge of interest in Canadian books.

It seems to me that if we can get organized, this would be a great way to attract those people to the fediverse.

  28. Picked up a free copy of this wonderful book from a fellow local free library that's a few blocks from my home. It's in mint condition. One of several #books on my reading wishlist.

Theory of Crows by David A. Robinson.

[David A. Robertson is an author and graphic novelist based in Winnipeg. The multi-talented writer of Swampy Cree heritage has published several books across a variety of genres, including picture books On the Trapline and When We Were Alone, graphic novel Breakdown, and his memoir Black Water, which won two 2021 Manitoba Book Awards.

Robertson is the winner of the 2021 Freedom to Read Award. He was also the host of the CBC Edmonton podcast Kiwew.

Robertson curated a reading list about residential schools on Twitter, then adapted the list for CBC Books.]

  30. What's everyone reading coming up on this long weekend? I've got two books on the go as I often do! I'm enjoying both of these very much. Premee Mohamed's THE SIEGE OF BURNING GRASS just came out two weeks ago, and Sydney Hegele's debut novel BIRD SUIT comes in in May. Thanks to Invisible Publishing for the advance copy!
