  1. "We tend to think of the internet as permanent, but recent weeks have been a stark reminder of how fragile our digital record really is.

The Internet Archive releases its new book, Vanishing Culture: A Report on Our Fragile Cultural Record, as the headlines tell a parallel story.

    ▪ download the book for free at the Internet Archive: archive.org/details/vanishing-

    ▪ buy it at betterworldbooks.com/product/d or at your local bookstore. "

  3. My latest library book:
    Caryatids, by @bruces .

Not sure: is it #hopepunk? #solarpunk? Definitely #scifi. I'm just starting it.

Published in 2009, it feels very contemporary: when we're in constant conversation with advanced computers, what is "real"?

  4. @aki check out @susankayequinn 's excellent young adult books. Ex: the Mindjack series. I read them using the Libby app, and if your library has them too (they surely do) you might even get them for 'free'!

Also, @pluralistic 's Little Brother and Homeland (duology):
    Free online here: gutenberg.org/ebooks/30142

You may enjoy them too! I did :-)

  6. But, of course:
Florida school district bans book about banning books.

Ban This Book, by Alan Gratz
    en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ban_Th

It's the stoey of a 4th-grade girl who tries to check out a favourite book at her library, and is told she can't any more. So she runs a contraband library out of her locker …

"All the best for a cozy holiday season from everyone at Toronto Public Library.

This beautiful scarf was crafted by Christine, a librarian who contributes her talents to the Keep Calm and Carry Yarn circle at Toronto Reference Library. We offer knit and crochet circles citywide, where crafters of all experience levels can bond over patterns, tips and friendship."

  8. Education matters.
    Libraries matter.
    Dinner table conversation matters.
    Bedtime stories matter.

Developing empathetic young people who can interpret what they experience and talk about what they want … it happens one story, one cpnversation at a time.

    It's slow, *very* important work.

Model the vocabulary, the ideas, you want to see used in the world. 🙏

  10. … Toronto Public Libraries have also opened "three new Youth Hubs at Brentwood, Maryvale and Toronto Reference Library (downtown), providing more opportunities for teens to connect with friends, study, use technology or just hang out. And it doesn’t stop there!  Bridlewood is also launching a Youth Hub later this fall, bringing the total to 28 Youth Hubs citywide."

  14. Like good fiction?

I'm just finishing a 2nd reading of The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms (by N. K. Jemison) and it's quite amazing. Greek pantheon meets modern fantasy fiction.

Jemison is a master. I'm in awe.

"We've designed a world that's extremely prone to these 'avalanches' … a system that operates with optimisation & efficiency as its main priorities, … we have no slack in the system. … We're creating a world where the [resulting] 'avalanches' are more consequential & more likely to upend our social lives."

"The stability in our daily lives is happening as the world is changing faster & more profoundly than ever before …"

  16. Into chapter 3 of "Slow River" by Nicola Griffith @Nicolaz and quite enjoying its slightly impressionistic style. As to genre, I guess I'd call it cyberpunk?

    She's a new-to-me author, a good discovery. Have a look.
