  2. Feeling rather chuffed with myself. I’ve set up a #RaspberryPi to act as an RSS aggregator, a read it later service and a podcast catcher all in the one.

Reason: so I can use open source apps on both iOS and Android devices AND keep everything in sync.

  3. @marcoarment I’m a subscriber of Overcast to support. However, for some time now I use audiobookshelf to maintain my podcast library. And Overcast and ABS don’t play along nice. But I’ll keep my subscription :)

Could/would you add support for ABS? The current RSS feed described by ABS is just to much of a hassle :)

Nutzt jemand PinePod? #DID #diday #dut #podcast #selfhosting #heimserver #audiobookshelf @_DigitalWriter_

  5. Die CDs sind jetzt als #Opus-Dateien in meiner #Audiobookshelf im Keller angekommen. \o/

Wer braucht schon Audible, wenn man seine Hörbücher viel geiler im Keller selbst hosten kann? ;-)

  6. I am looking for #iOS users that have a #AudioBookShelf server themselves and want to test out my app #Oudy

It is a small, native iOS app that connects to your ABS server and offers playing, downloading and more.

Send me your Apple account email and first and second name, and I will add you to the #ExternalTesters group.

  8. 📝 Turning my reading list into podcasts #Development #Webdev #Audiobookshelf #Linkding

linkding is one of my favorite applications that I self-host and the place where I save everything I want to read later. The catch being that what little time I can dedicate to actually reading is spent on books. What I do have is time where I can listen to things while doing chores around the house, out on walks or otherwise engaged...

  9. Since I had a lot of paperwork to do today I managed to procrastinate by moving my partner's audiobook collection offline (with the added benefit of being able to share the content with chosen family members). This should've been a technical blog post but I am too lazy to have a blog, tried a few times.

Step 1: get your stuff off the audible (which is the content provider for said partner).
In order to do that, we get a program called "Libation": github.com/rmcrackan/Libation (huge thanks to @neil for sharing it earlier!).
This program runs on every OS I could find at home (but in my case runs on Debian), its UI is ugly and clunky like something ugly and clunky (the author gives a fair warning about that and I am not the one complaining - I am grateful it works! I am not an UI designer myself, can blame the other person) and does the job exactly as promised. No hiccups, fair amount of various y useful options and it takes a moment to choose the right ones. One can feel it has been done by someone who knows their onions, design aspects aside it is a very nice piece of smoothly working code.
I might help the author later redoing the user interface a bit, once I have some free time, but will not touch anything else. IT WORKS.

    Step 2: storage.
Obviously we can store our files on the local computer but that's not the point, innit. I have a QNAP NAS holding a vast collection of our old audiobooks from many different sources, many of them very old digitised tapes first released in Poland many years ago. So I point Libation to merge fresh content with the existing folder structure on NAS. IT WORKS.

Step 3: how to get all that on my partner's phone now?
A tricky one, since on premises that's not a problem but outside our WiFi? Library is too large to simply chuck in on ones phone.
The convergent wisdom of the Internet (that part of it that I tend to lurk in anyway) rightly suggests the AudiobookShelf audiobookshelf.org/ - at the first glance it IS the thing that I want. But how do I run it on NAS? A bit of a search later I find that it is present on the 3rd party app repository I use anyway: myqnap.org/
Word of advice: it requires ffmpeg from the same store, as I found out the hard way.
Documentation for this method of installation is next to non-existent, I spent a very frustrating hour trying to figure out what port it runs on, which interface it binds to (my NAS has more than one), etc. And there seem to no obvious way of altering the configuration of the network! Granted, I didn't try to SSH into the NAS and dig there, it's just the UI that doesn't allow. Which is disappointing.
Anyway, in case you follow my steps: interface is the one you defaulted your non-admin WWW traffic to, port is the same as you are pointed to in the browser UI.
To get that out into the world you need to forward said port to the said interface and having a static IP on it helps, of course. Static or unchanching, whatever floats your goat.
If you have non-static IP with your provider, as majority has, QNAP offers you nicely working DDNS service via their cloud ID thing. Your device address would be <your-qnap-device-name>.myqnap.cloud or similar pattern. You can find it in the details of your device on their cloud service. It's free.
What is not free is the SSL certificate. You can pay up for the privilege, or you can use http. Audiobookshelf doesn't care.
One last thing you probably would like to do with AudiobookShelf is to setup unprivleged users for evey person you intent to allow to connect to your server. That's done in browser UI itself, is very straightforward with a few auth options available. I didn't try 3rd party authentication so do your homework, I just did user/password pairs, restricted them from doing changes, enabled explicit content for adults and disabled that for minors. IT WORKS.

    Step 4: mobile app.
I detest Android almost as much as I detest "everything needs to be in browser" mindset, so can't tell how AudiobookShelf's beta own app works. Their Apple Store beta is full and can't be accessed too.
So I went with another 3rd party free app, a thing called "Plappa" plappa.me/ - the author will receive donation as this thing is exactly what one might need. It connected to my own server over the internet, itself it's simple no-nonsense thing that does one job and does it well. AudiobookShelf also recommends it as one of the 3rd party apps for use with their server as "audiobookshelf enabled". Rightly so. Check their recommendation list, seems to be worth it. More importantly: IT WORKS

And now I am going back at looking at Libation's progress at liberating a few hundred audiobooks. And will consider if I want to chip in with import from Audioteka, which I always did using Python...

  10. I set up #Navidrome (music) and #Audiobookshelf (audiobooks & podcasts) as audio streaming servers this weekend and both have been a very painless experience. As iOS frontends I‘m currently testing #Amperfy and #plappa, which has also been a smooth experience so far.
I’ve had tracks disappearing from playlists on streaming services, which I find annoying, so I want similar convenience and better control. I own quite a bit of music, it’s just been less convenient to listen to. #selfhosting

  15. I just successfully finished installing and setting up from scratch: #omv7, #nextcloud, #audiobookshelf and the #arrs. It took me about a month of trial and error. This was my first dive into anything like this and I'm feeling pretty snazy about it. Shout out to the helpful people over at #servarr discord!

  16. @thechrisdantes mine's an old PC that I've salvaged. Got rid of #windows10 since its eol is coming up and slapped #openmediavault on it. So far I've successfully gotten #nextcloud and #audiobookshelf to work. Still working on my #arrs.

  17. Testing out audiobookshelf. Uploaded my Audible audiobooks, and transferred all my podcasts from overcast with an opml file. So far so good. Currently using ShelfPlayer to access my server.

  18. @calcifer Tall ask. As far as I know, #Audible is one of the very few places to get #audiobooks. And it’s the simplest to get books from as well.

I buy them from the #Audible website and have #Libation running on a server to auto download to home storage and strip the DRM off. For playback I use #Audiobookshelf which has both streaming and local download capabilities. The #iOS app is in TestFlight though.

  19.  Christopher wrote the following post Fri, 30 Aug 2024 07:07:23 -0700 Success!  🎉🎉🎉 All of my services, including this instance, have successfully migrated to my new (new to me) server. I use @YunoHost. It's a great way to run server apps without being a complete expert, but allows (sometimes requires) the use of the command line. A great way to learn.
You don't even need fancy equipment. All of this can be run on an old desktop or laptop. Most of this can even run on a Raspberry Pi.
So, what am I running on my server?
    • #Streams - Social Media via Fediverse and federates with Flipboard, Threads, and millions of other sites.
    • #Nextcloud - Google Photos & Drive alternative, complete with object, landmark, facial, & location recognition & in-browser document editing. Includes tasks,  calendars, RSS Feed reader, Forms, Map location history, Notes, Music & Podcast player.
    • #Syncthing - Device to device file sync. No cloud needed. I mostly use to sync my Bible pdf markups & notes in Obsidian.
    • #Calibre Web - Ebook website that syncs books to you Kobo ereader.
    • #Audiobookshelf - website for audiobooks, podcasts, & ebooks.
    • #Actual - Home Budget Software.
    • #Peertube - Video sharing site similar to YouTube.
    • Matrix via Synapse - Encrypted Chat which should be the replacement of all other chat services due to its flexibility.
    • #Vikunja - A to do app with kanban & collaboration.
    • #WordPress site - Website hosting for multiple sites,  including our family website, my personal website, Tales of My Life website and a few others.

I'd be glad to help anyone wanting to learn how to get started. If you're looking to own your own data, this is the path to digital personal sovereignty. You do not own your posts or photos in Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram, TikTok, or Twitter. You don't own your files or photos in iCloud, Google, Onedrive, or Dropbox. All these companies have to do is close your account for any reason (or no reason) and you've lost it all. Can you imagine losing all of your photos stored on Facebook or Google? 😱

  21. I like #Audible, but I also prefer to have my audiobooks on my own storage. Luckily there is #OpenAudible that can download my legally purchased titles, and #AudiobookShelf that can help me organize and listen to them - even when I'm on the road. Recently I've discovered that OpenAudible comes in a #containerized version, which is right up my alley - I could run it on my Synology NAS, access it from anywhere and not worry about files filling up my laptop or desktop system. Now here's the amusing part: sure the OpenAudible guys have provided a "containerized" version, but it's done in all the wrong ways: it's still running their Java application, but wrapped in an HTTP-enabled remote desktop client that accesses a Linux desktop, which is also running in the container. There's even an SSH server running there. Guys, while your application is most excellent, you have many things to learn about containers - full fat VM-like containers is not how you do it.

  22. I have achieved functionality and convenience for my #audiobooks #video #videogames #music and #comics.

I guess my favorite game of evaluating software and hardware has ended for a while and I have to start *sigh* actually playing games and consuming media.

What a horrible problem to have. 😭

    #Audiobookshelf, #emby, #rogally, #komga, #calibreserver

  23. For anyone who wants to break free of the annoying shackles of the #audible app: #Libation syncs with your account and automatically strips off the DRM. In my case it saves it straight into the content folder of #audiobookshelf (running on a NAS), which serves and streams the freed audiobooks to the entire family, each with their own account and saved progress. And while you're at it, maybe quit Audible for libro.fm - takes the Amazon out of Audiobooks. Feels really good! #audiobooks #lifetips

  24. #BigBearTechWorld have added #Gluetun to their CasaOS repo. I haven't tried it yet, but this does give me hope

I installed some Jellyfin apps on my OSMC pi, and it can now see my files. Videos run at about a frame every few minutes or so... Maybe that old pi3 just isn't up to the task.
    Still using my Chromecast.

Looking for an #AudioBook server, #AudioBookShelf looks like a very likely candidate.

Also got #Calibre-web running but it's a bit painful to use with an e-ink device.
