Local AI detection, footage that never leaves your house, any camera, smart-home triggers — and no $120/yr. Frigate makes Ring look like a subscription trap, because it is one.

  12. I've tried #zoneminder and hated it because it's impossible to understand the settings so you get alerted about real stuff and not sun dapples.

I've tried #frigate and I hated it because it uses a lot of compute (i.e. power, fan noise, etc) to do an amazing job 80% of the time and completely miss things the rest of the time. Also, it took me weeks to get it working then it stopped after a year and I can't be arsed to figure out why.

What other **SELF HOSTED** #security #surveillance #opensource #software is out there?

I have lots of IP #camera that are pretty flexible.

  13. In the odd chance that you, like me, are an idiot running frigate on Asahi Linux on a Mac m1 using a Google Coral TPU, know this:

It will only recognize the TPU on reboot if it is plugged into a USB A slot, *not* USB C.

    Insane but true.

  14. Currently learning Frigate, a self-hosted open source security cam software with local ai object detection, and had some trouble figuring out a cheap camera to find and use for testing purposes - specially one without a cloud-portal, that doesn't contact home, and has open rtsp for streaming. The only option I had found initially was reolink.

But sure enough, a robust community exists and someone, "thingino", has come out with re-flashing hacks for older model cameras like wyze v3's with dead simple instructions. Some cameras require soldering specs but others, like this one, only need no-tool installers like you would use for raspberry pi sd flashing.

Now you can grab some $10 cameras off your local craigslist or marketplace, bypass vendor lock-in, and re-utilize cameras that were needlessly destined for a trash bin by way of planned obsolescence from a wasteful companies demands.

  15. Drogie #Fedi.

  16. Oh, interesting - #Wyze apparently can detect whether a garage door is open or closed. It’s an AI feature so requires a subscription. I was not impressed with their AI features a year ago, but surely a garage door is much simpler.

    (No, I still haven’t set up #Frigate.)

I was informed someone has been accidentally leaving it open, so here we are. Got a Zigbee tilt sensor from Third Reality on the way as well.

I’d rather not make the garage doors internet accessible in any way, but I guess we’ll see how much of a problem this is.

  17. Lately I haven't been taking anything #running with me except my iPod video and some headphones. For the longest time, I was trying to use a stopwatch while I was running to track my pace, but I kept accidentally stopping it in the middle of the run. Today I figured out that I could just use #frigate on my #homeassistant instance to see when I got back to the house and calculate my total time from that.

  18. @xabd I have read that you need substantial processing power to enable the object detection, ID and tracking in #Frigate . That makes sense, but it a means an RPi 4 is insufficient without a TPU co-processor. I’d like to use it but that is a showstopper for me due to cost, What is your experience with platform requirements for Frigate?
