Looks like I‘m running #OPNsense since 3.5 years now. Before that I was using #pfSense.
All running on the same #Protectli FW4B box, which replaced my FRITZ!box 5.5 years ago.

Well, 6 hours of hair tearing later and i have 4 tagged vlans and a host network working. With network isolation and, well, a way too complex network for what I need! But oh so satisfying to finally have it working!!

Hmm Pfsense(s) were showing update avialbble on it's dashboard for a few mins earlier. (2.9.0.b.20260806.1750)
They are all now showing 2.8.1 as current.. And 2.9 is available via the update menu? New version in the offing?

And the new ISP is up! We switched from #Centurylink to #QuantumFiber. No change in services really, since I already had symmetrical 1Gbps. Just lower price.
The tech swapped out the ONT for a Lumen Q1000K. After a few attempts, I was able to update my WAN config in #pfSense to get rid of the old PPPoE credentials Centurylink used. I had already looked up info about setting the Lumen device to transparent bridge mode to avoid a double NAT scenario.

The Promox node for my pfSense router has been screaming at me ("BACK UP DATA NOW!") for two and a half weeks. Finally had a chance to acquire a used Samsung SSD from a local eBay seller and get everything migrated over. The old SSD was at 90% wear level when the alerts started appearing, and 97% by the time it was retired today. I like to live on the edge!

I don't talk about it a lot, but I am a long time #overclocker (started in 1994) and computer builder. Just a hobby, not competitive. Just, very long time.
The hobby is not dead, at all. But it is radically changed by the #oligarchs trying to get compute behind a paywall as Moore's Law grinds down. (That is "#datacenter" and "#AI" to most of you.)

Question for all the other #selfhosting peeps: has anyone got any suggestions for setting up a #WAF in front of your services? Currently I’m relying on #haproxy on my #pfsense appliance, but a web application firewall would make me feel a bit safer.

As a networking noob I find OPNSense soooo much easier to use than pfSense.
I recently switched over to OPNSense and I was dreading having to recreate my DNS over TLS settings and ad blocking lists.
Turns out it was so easy and it didn't require any plugins. If settings in pfSense are sprinkled in 5 different sections, in OPNSense are grouped logically, making things so much easier to configure.

@moelassus I have done the migration when I moved from #pfsense to #opnsense . It was pretty easy. I work often in #json so converting custom config options wasn't an issue.
The biggest annoyance I find is there is no way to expire a single current lease without restarting kea dhcp daemon via the GUI.

Setting up remote access to Bambulab 3D printers that are on a different VLAN than yours is a pain in the ass.
Bambulab has chosen the wrong path. It might carve out a niche among users who aren't very tech-savvy when it comes to 3D printing (and who aren’t interested in learning either), but all of us nerds who have used their printers are going to tell them to go to hell.

@openwrt It feels reassuring to see an OpenWRT release a short time after the #dnsmasq security fix with release notes explicitly mentioning said fix.
#pfSense has been running incredibly stable for years on my home router but its update frequency feels questionable to me. I'm going to migrate to OpenWRT. After using it on some actual WiFi gear I am amazed how much OpenWRT has matured! 🤗

Wipe, install, then install #pfSense and flip the Proxmox to be secured behind pfSense, and add a #Ruckus smartzone controller and some other VMs
All without physical access to the machine. Takes me way back to remote #Sun #Sparc installs via a #RS232 #Spiderport :-p

Bueno, parece que los ataques de scraping estan cesando o por lo menos el bloqueo del firewall está siendo exitoso y permite más o menos respirar al servidor. Como últimas novedades, ayer terminé de migrar las listas de bloque de Alias y reglas manuales, a listas dinámicas automáticas, aparte de que agregué algunas más que estaban faltando. Las listas dinámicas corren en bajo nivel en el firewall y aprovechan el motor pf packet filter que hace famoso a pf-Sense. Eso quedó lujo y los tests que corrí muestran que el firewall ni se despeina filtrando unas 50k IPs. También en el proxy Nginx dejé corriendo CrowdSec junto con Fail2ban y ahora ambos alimentan de IPs maliciosas que detectan, al pf-Sense que las bloquea para toda la red. CrowdSec fue sugerencia de @j3j5 y luego de @ElenaMusk y valió la pena porque solo lo conocía de nombre, nunca lo había probado, muchas gracias por el apoyo y la ayuda. Pensé que era similar a Fail2ban pero se nota que es mucho más moderno y agarra IPs que Fail2ban no agarra, justamente por el análisis decomportamiento. Yo creo que estamos bastante bien ahora, con pfBlocker-NG, Suricata y DNSBL corriendo en pf-Sense y Fail2ban y CrowdSec corriendo en el proxy que a su vez retroalimenta a pf-Sense. #pfsense #crowdsec #dnsbl #suricata #seguridad #undernet #mastodon
