ok. I found my #devonthink replacement for #linux. #paperless-ngx locally in a podman container on my desktop and laptop. #syncthing syncs the paperless folders and sqlite database.

...works great!

Mit NAPS2 lassen sich unter Linux sehr bequem analoge Dokumente direkt vom Scanner samt OCR Texterkennung als PDF erstellen.

In Kombination mit einem Tool wie Recoll kann man so alle Dokumente digital lokal verwalten und hat sämtliche Metadaten direkt in den Dateien, nicht in der DB eines komplexen Dokumentenmanagementsystems.

Vorteil: Kleiner Footprint, keinerlei Server, auch kein lokaler Server notwendig, kein Docker, kein Podman, keine Linux Shell im Einsatz.
Das Backup und Langzeitsicherung der digitalisierten Dokumente ist damit so simpel gehalten wie möglich und gleichzeitig durch das PDF Format mit eingebetteter, unsichtbarer Textebene auch maximal kompatibel mit allen Betriebssystemen.

Ugh. I‘ve been debugging my #Paperless install for ages. Most files would remain in queue forever, without any errors in the logs. Manually adding the files again took multiple approaches for the files to finally be processed. Turns out, Paperless doesn‘t like to share a #Redis service. So starting a second Redis docker container on my #Unraid server solely for Paperless finally solved the issue. The joys of #selfhosting 😖

Today is the day I start my own #AITeaParty. I am throwing that shit in the harbor and I invite you to do the same.

For reasons, I am documenting multiple generations of birth certificates. I have scanned some and been emailed some. I want them all together in a good place and I started to upload them to my #Paperless install in my docker. Then I thought "Is this fucking thing hooked up to any #AI anything? Will my family's birth certificates become part of a training set if I collect them in this place?"

The fact that I had to go and check before I put sensitive information in a tool under my full control was a wake-up call. I am disconnecting everything from everything because I don't want to ever think that thought again.

I have my #Karakeep hooked up to #OpenAI but I am disconnecting it today. I'd rather not have automatically generated tags than the history of what I find interesting in a training set. They are cute but not worth it.

Generalizing from there: is there any benefit I receive from any generative AI process worth the risks of touching it at all, or of it having any aspect of my data? Fuck no. Today's the day. I've been an indifferent but unmotivated critic. From this second on, I vow to remove it from anything under my control. If it is a third or fourth party risk because the product I use, I will work to extract myself and my data from those products. If your work product was generated in whole or in part with generative AI tools, I don't want it. If you think they are a good idea, I don't want you and your judgement affecting me.

Clearly this is an uphill climb because the percentage of commercial products and freelancers that use #OpenAI or #Gemini or #Grok or #HellscapeAI rounds to everything. It won't be perfect and it won't be easy but I have the time and energy and I'm fired up.

The latest releases of #FairScan have a nice feature to facilitate its ethical data-driven software development approach: there is now a built-in convenience action in the About dialog to allow you to email the raw photo of the latest scan to @pynicolas if you encounter examples of situations that cause the autodetection heuristics to fail. I've sent them a few samples today.

Has anyone ever gotten `services.webdav` to work on :nixos: #NixOS?

I have a very simple and probably very common task: Expose a directory (in my case `/var/lib/paperless/consume`) via #WebDAV so my scanner can upload their PDFs there. I'm pretty much doing this¹ here, but also this person has problems uploading. I can browse the folder via WebDAV (e.g. from #Thunar or via #curl), but anything upload/file creation gives permission denied or crashes clients
