AYANEO launches AM03 mini PC with retro console-like design for $399 and up
The AYANEO AM03 is a small desktop computer with a design inspired by classic game consoles, although unlike some of the company’s other models, the AM03 doesn’t look like a clone of 1980s-era PCs or consoles so much as it takes some of it design cues from that era.
Available in a black or cyan colors, the AM03 has a boxy design with a series of buttons on top of the chassis, along with an […]

SZBOX DS156 is the latest take on a 15.6 inch notebook with an integrated 7-inch tablet
SZBOX has started selling a new 15.6″ laptop on its AliExpress store. The most intriguing feature of the SZBOX DS156 is the 7-inch tablet situated to the right of its keyboard and touchpad.
This isn’t a new idea by any means. Lenovo offered a high-end 17.3″ ThinkPad with an 8-inch secondary screen back in 2022. Just last year Topton introduced a much more modest take on the concept with the […]

MeLE’s Overclock X5 is a compact computer with a 45 watt Intel Alder Lake processor
The MeLE Overclock line of computers are small systems with enhanced cooling that allow laptop-class processors to run at higher-than-typical power limits. Up until recently MeLE had mostly focused on releasing models with low-power chips in the 6 to 15 watt range, like the Intel Celeron N5095, Intel Processor N100, or Intel Core i3-N300. But now the company has launched the first model with a 45-watt processor.
MeLE’s new Overclock X5 mini PC features an Intel Core i5-12450H processor and features support for up to 64GB of RAM and up to two SSDs. It’s available from AliExpress for $385 and up.
The starting price is for a model with 16GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD, but no operating system. You can pay $15 more for a Windows 11 Pro license, or pay extra for configurations with up to 32GB of RAM and 1TB of storage.
At 180 x 103 x 31mm (7.1″ x 4.1″ x 1.2″), the Overclock X5 is a little larger than the Overclock 4C (178 x 94 x 21mm or 7″ x 3.7″ x 0.8″). But the extra room should help dissipate heat from the higher-power processor, and it also allowed MeLE to equip the new model with more features.
Instead of a single SODIMM slot for memory, there are now two. Instead of a single M.2 slot for storage, there are now two. And instead of a single Ethernet port, there are now two.
You can probably thank to the processor for some of those updates. While the Intel Core i5-12450H is a few years old at this point, it’s still a higher-performance processor than the Intel Core i3-N300, which was the most powerful chip available in a MeLE Overclock mini PC up until now.
While the Core i3-N300 is based on Alder Lake-N architecture, the Core i5-12450H is a full-fledged Alder Lake chip. So instead of topping out at 32GB of single-channel DDR4-3200 memory, it supports up to 64GB of dual-channel memory. And instead of 9 lanes of PCIe 3.0 it supports up to 28 lanes of PCIe 3.0/4.0.
Alder Lake-N chips also only have Efficiency cores. So while the Core i3-300 processor is a pretty decent performer thanks to its 8 CPU cores, the Core i5-12450H scores substantially higher in single-core and multi-core performance tests thanks to its mix of 4 Performance cores and 4 Efficiency cores.
The MeLE Overclock X5 has one M.2 2280 slot with support for PCIe 4.0 x4 storage and a second that can be used for a SATA SSD. The system also comes with an Intel AX201 wireless card with support for WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2, but MeLE notes that the computer is compatible with Intel’s BE200 card if you want to upgrade to WiFi 7.
Ports include:
- 1 x USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C (10 Gbps, DisplayPort 1.4, and power input)
- 1 x USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C (10 Gbps and DisplayPort 1.4)
- 2 x USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A (10 Gbps)
- 1 x USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A (5 Gbps)
- 2 x HDMI 2.0
- 1 x 2.5 Gb Ethernet (RTL8125B)
- 1 x Gigabit Ethernet (RTL8111H)
- 1 x 3.5mm audio
- 1 x microSD card reader
- 1 x DC power input (19V/6.32A)
MeLE says the system supports up to four displays, which could make it an option for digital signage. But with a processor designed for 2022-era mainstream laptops, it could also serve as a decent general-purpose computer.
It would have been nice to have seen a Thunderbolt port on this models – one of the other differences between Alder Lake and Alder Lake-N chips is that the former support Thunderbolt while the latter do not. But overall the Overclock X5 looks like a nice step up from other members of the OverClock family for those that need a little more power and are willing to put up with a slightly larger footprint to get it.

So, lately I have been tinkering with my home server set up. After a few years of using my old Lenovo Ivy Bridge era server as a home server, I decided it's finally time to upgrade it. While it was fun to use enterprise-grade equipment I got on the cheap, its power usage & restrictions started becoming a major issue.
In search of a cheaper home server build, I was inspired by a couple homelab YouTubers like @CraftComputing and looked into some Erying boards and ended up with a board with an Intel Core i5 12450H ES chip and boy was it an adventure.
Been having this board for over a week and the great news is that the chip performed very well, it's super snappy. Those 4P + 4E cores ran laps around the old 12x Ivy Bridge Xeon CPUs that the old Lenovo server had. Having the built in graphics for Intel QuickSync has been amazing for transcoding & serving media. The fact that I get modern I/O like NVMe & USB3.x is a godsend as the old Lenovo server only came with USB 2 & didn't like it when you plug in any uncertified PCIe cards.
Now, while the chip ran great, it wasn't without its faults, it is an ES chip after all and the board has its quirks too. The biggest issue of all was that for the past week, I was experiencing hard locks whenever I try to do large file transfers to NVMe SSDs or hard drives connected to an HBA plugged into any of the PCIe slots. After hours of troubleshooting, turns out something about the Debian 12's stock kernel made it constantly hard lock. Using a newer mainline kernel (6.7.7 as of writing) provided by Zabbly (@stgraber) solved the issue, machine is now very stable, haven't been able to recreate the hard crash issue.
While not a major issue, found it weird that the motherboard didn't like the 400W Corsair PSU that I originally wanted to use but worked fine with the 400W Cooler Master PSU, not sure why as both PSUs work perfectly fine on other systems.
Another quirk that I discovered is that in Windows 11, the E-cores are stuck at its full clock speed and can't downclock at idle. So the E-cores were all doing 2.7 GHz when there's no reason to do so. This is the likely reason why the system idled around 60-65W compared to about 30W in Linux.
All in all, this Erying board has been quite interesting, it performs well when it does and it was amazing to get an Alder Lake CPU + mobo for only US$99. I knew that ES chips came with its quirks & I've been troubleshooting computers most of my life but I wouldn't recommend it for anyone who is hosting anything mission critical or put it in a system for anyone who isn't tech savvy and/or loves to tinker/troubleshoot.
As a homelabber build, the idle isn't great at 30W, haven't been able to get it lower than that, probably need to tinker with it some more. If you don't need space for many hard drives, something like the HP EliteDesk 800 G3/G4 would be a better buy if you need low idle. However, if you live in an area where electricity isn't expensive, like something interesting, love to tinker and want something super cheap, this Erying board is hard to beat.
