Guys, it’s been a long time since I’ve been this happy with a computer purchase! Fedora recognized all my hardware perfectly right out of the box, and everything works great!
I’ve had very different experiences with my various mini-PCs made in Chinese factories using child labor, especially with the built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth cards...
Thunderbolt 4 is also recognized correctly, as are all devices connected to it. That didn’t work at all or only partially with the others (for example, the monitor only worked via the USB-C port on the monitor, but there was no image via the monitor’s Thunderbolt port; when the Logitech receiver was connected through the monitor, the mouse movements and keyboard inputs were choppy, etc.). But here: problem-free and fast via a single Thunderbolt 4 cable!
The installation was done in a few minutes - that’s Linux for you. A Windows installation takes many hours for this… and then you’re left with nothing but spyware and ads on your computer.
Conclusion: Asus NUC 16 Pro - highly recommended for every Linux user!

Looking for Mini PC recommendations for Home Server (low power)
I consider to replace gradually my Hetzner CPX32 VPS with a home infrastructure solution.
Requirements:
- Energy efficiency & low power at idle/load
- OS: openSUSE MicroOS
- Prefer x86 or ARM with solid Linux supportSeen N100 mini PCs, AceMagic S3A (Ryzen 7 8745HS), Beelink EQ13. What would you recommend?
Any pitfalls to watch out for? -

Change of plans: I didn’t end up waiting for the upcoming Minisforum MS-03 Workstation after all, but instead decided on the ASUS NUC16 PRO on a whim.
The reason was that Wendell from Level1Techs really praised this NUC in his latest video. He also highlighted the great Linux support from both Intel and ASUS. I’ve linked the video below.
And unlike many Chinese manufacturers, you can easily find all the drivers on their support pages (both Intel and ASUS)—including those for Linux! Plus, the download servers are fast, unlike with the Chinese manufacturers...
It has 32 GB of RAM, but unfortunately it’s soldered onto the motherboard on this model—though it does offer faster speeds.
I had to buy the NVMe drive separately; I opted for a 1 TB WD Black SN850X. Since I store everything on the NAS, I need virtually no storage space on the computer itself—just enough for the operating system; 256 GB would be more than enough. But a larger NVMe drive means more speed and a longer lifespan.
Other specs: Intel Core Ultra X7 358H, ASRock B390, 2x TB4, 2x 2.5-inch, 4x USB-A 10G, 1x USB-C 10G, 2x HDMI 2.1, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, two M.2 Gen5/Gen4 slots. It’s a breeze!
So, let’s install Linux on it! (To be on the safe side and to ensure the best possible support, it’ll be Fedora again...)

Anyone popped the case off to access fans, ram, or ssd on a Minisforum em780?
Mine's fans are making the dying hum to banshee scream. (using it as one of my homeservers) Trying to figure out how not seeing spots that really look like laptop pop points and only screws I saw when inside the "outer" case?

Usi: internet, email, lettura pdf, tanto emacs. Qualche video o podcast ecc.

Lilbits: Goodbye OnePlus, Hello Xteink X4 Pro and a Game Boy Advance lookalike from AYANEO
A year and a half after launch, the MeLE QuieterDL fanless mini PC is getting a modest processor spec bump… and a big price increase. More than a decade after entering the global smartphone market, OnePlus is pulling back. And at a time when most consumer electronics are seeing RAM & storage-related price hikes, Xteink has made a bit of a splash with its cheap, small, and honestly barely […]

Out of Office – with a twist. ☀️
Someone in the team has taken our promise of our XPC cube SB860R8 staying cool under pressure a bit too literally and sneaked it onto their beach holiday. 🌊
(Disclaimer: Please don’t actually rest your drinks on the chassis – condensation and high-performance electronics aren’t the best of friends, even in the summer heat! And we strongly advise keeping your rigs sand-free too.) ⚠️
Have a brilliant, cool summer! 🍦🌴

I have a spare machine - ThinkCentre M720q - that should be supported by the 'linux-libre' kernel (I don't need wifi).

A quick update on the MSI Cubi AI+: I returned the little box to the store the next day. Reason: an obvious motherboard defect.
Out of ten attempts to turn on the mini-PC, nine were unsuccessful. And even when it did finally turn on, most of the ports didn’t work; it wasn’t until I unplugged and replugged them several times that an image appeared on the monitor. The monitor is brand new, too, and works perfectly with my other computers, so that’s not the problem.
Bottom line: great specs, but basically crap. Something like this shouldn’t happen to a company like MSI.
And the unbelievably extensive pre-installed bloatware is also scandalous. Also: installing and setting up Windows 11 was an absolute nightmare, but that’s not MSI’s fault—it’s Microslop. It’s a shame I couldn’t install and try out Linux anymore, which was the original plan and intended use case.
Now I’m waiting for the upcoming Minisforum MS-03 Workstation, which also features a Panther Lake CPU.

Lilbits: Punkt MC03 Google-free Android phone now shipping, AYANEO Pocket Micro 2 goes up for pre-order (again)
Earlier this year, Punkt introduced a new smartphone with a privacy-focused, Google-free, Android-based operating system called AphyOS. Now it’s shipping.
And last month, AYANEO launched a pocket-sized handheld game console… which sold out almost immediately, apparently because the company only made about 100. Now they’re making… some more. At least enough for two more batches of […]

Wow, that was absolutely dreadful! From the moment I first turned it on until I had a fully functional setup with all the updates, settings, and necessary programs—and their configuration—it took over FIVE HOURS on Windows 11! With a short break for lunch.
On Linux, the same setup—including a completely fresh install and updates—takes me just over an hour, and it’s not nearly as annoying as it is on Windows 11.
Updates that take forever, an unbelievable amount of bloatware (good thing I don’t blame Microsoft alone, but also MSI), constant reboots, having to hunt down and download all the programs from all over the place instead of having everything in one place like on Linux, and so on.
On the other hand, it was “interesting” to go through this experience again and see what the setup process is like on Windows 11 these days. I haven’t done this in a very long time. With Windows 10 IoT LTSC—which I usually use alongside Linux—it’s significantly faster and less of a hassle...
Well, in any case, I now appreciate again what I have in Linux; sometimes you have to go through a bit of a rough patch to be able to appreciate the value of free, high-quality alternatives once more.

It’s actually unbelievable: just for fun, I decided to go through the entire Windows 11 installation process on my new MSI Cubi. Let’s see how it goes these days.
What can I say? Unbelievable! It took almost TWO HOURS just for the initial updates before I could even start setting it up! Are Microsoft’s servers that slow? The download took forever, not to mention the installations… And then the worst part: the pre-installed bloatware! Dozens of crappy third-party programs—and of course, they all want your data and a subscription… But Microsoft takes the cake: 22 (!!!) installations of Office 365 in the respective national languages! And each one is around 7 GB! That’s just 150 GB for a piece of junk software! And uninstalling each Office installation takes several minutes...
I’m going to stick with this crap anyway, just because I want to know how much of my life setting up Windows 11 with MSI’s bloatware is going to waste today. The day’s already gone to hell anyway.

My brand-new powerhouse: MSI Cubi NUC AI+ 3MG
Intel Core Ultra 9 386H processor, 32 GB RAM, 1 TB NVMe, and much more.
What a beast!
My first Intel-based PC in many, many years. But the new Panther Lake generation is currently superior to AMD. I couldn’t care less about the “Copilot” feature—who needs that crap? I certainly don’t. But I wanted a new, up-to-date, and powerful computer again for the next 5 or 6 years. And even though it wasn’t cheap, if I spread the purchase price of 1,500 EUR over 72 months, that’s 20 EUR per month, so the computer has actually paid for itself in even less time.
But I’m curious to see which Linux—or rather, which kernel version—will run smoothly on it, given all these very new components. My planned testing order: Debian Sid, Fedora with kernel 7.2-rc, and finally Arch. I don’t even need to think about FreeBSD right now, but maybe in the future.

We're all fucked.
The economy got broken by the money bags and the AI Bros.
Hope they all die slowly from cancer.
