working from my #SurfaceGo 1 with a Pentium Gold CPU running #Fedora44 and #niri today instead of the usual #MacbookAir M1. Gods, I love this little machine so much. I prefer the form factor of a Surface over a Macbook anyday. The keyboard of the first Surface Go is soooo nice. It feels soooo good. I don't care if it is an underpowered machine. It is a loving machine.
I posted about it SIX YEARS AGO when I was running it and happy with Windows 10:
https://andregarzia.com/2020/01/a-year-with-the-surface-go.html
Now that I am finally running Linux on it, it became even better. So happy with this little guy. Just wish the battery would last longer. -
I think I’ll update my #surfaceGo and #MacBookAir to the newest #Ubuntu release now.

Currently distro / DE hopping to find something that suits a Microsoft Surface Go (1).
10 inch 1800 X 1200 screen is nice.
8Gb of RAM is fine.
Pentium Gold processor is... meh at best.I really want to run XFCE but scaling is terrible.
Mint is ok, but cinamon is maybe just a hair too heavy.Anyone have suggestions for a DE / distro that is good with low powered laptops that need fractional scaling?

So it has been a few weeks since I got the Surface Go 2 and put linux onto it; I have been on-and-off setting the tablet up to my liking and now it's in a pretty good place. The last 2 jobs is to install the correct light sensor drivers (though I like to manually set the brightness), and install Signal
So I've nuked the Windows install and instead running Fedora 43 under the KDE Plasma Mobile environment as desktop is the most perfect to use on such a device and that has worked exactly as intended! This is true in general: it's been so much more reliable than the ThinkPad 13 with no freezes upon sleep and things like sound and the like just worked outa-the-box! Very pleased over the 1.5 weeks I've actually been using it.
In terms of the theming: I chose the iOS icons (the files one I'm still trying to find) as I really do prefer Apple's icons, and the background is a subtle trans background by naimapanda (I think) (https://wallpapercave.com/w/wp4842190).

hey #fediverse people using #mastodon on underpowered machines, what is your client of choice?
I'm on a #SurfaceGo with a Pentium Gold running #Fedora with #KDE and think that maybe someone here has a recommendation for something more lightweight than the default web client.

My last try to acclimate with a#MSWindows OS was years ago after I left IBM when I bought a #SurfaceGo tablet. It didn’t work. Even though I liked the hardware, I didn’t use it.
Now I’ve given it a second life. I set it up with #Ubuntu #Linux using the #SurfaceLinux project.Everything works fine but the pen. But Ian not sure if the pen still works at all.

A couple of years ago I picked up a Surface Go 2 tablet (with the detachable keyboard) so the family would have access to an ultra-portable Windows system. It's actually a really nice Windows 10 convertible!
It's also an annoyingly slow Windows 11 convertible, and I'm seriously considering "downgrading" it back to Windows 10 while it's still possible, then looking into the state of Linux drivers for it. I have been given an enthusiastic go-ahead for this plan by the rest of the household.

So this is my first drawing with my Surface Go 2.
Drawn in GIMP with my finger. I might get a Surface Pen later.Something just AMAZING about drawing with your own finger (or a stylus) over using a mouse.

#LinuxMobile #linuxtablet
