AROS: Experimental USB 3 support in Poseidon

In mid-December 2025, we reported that USB 3.0 support for the Poseidon USB stack was under development by Nick 'Kalamatee' Andrews, and that an initial experimental ISO was already available. Krzysztof 'deadwood' Śmiechowicz has now improved this approach to such an extent that AROS 64-bit can be booted from USB sticks on motherboards with USB 3 support.

I use my #smartphone as a router. The connection is not good for heavier traffic than #ping requests and responses. #lynx is okay.
So, I moved it from #usb2 to #usb3 The connection is by far better and with less disconnections.

Once the work is complete, this should enable the use of modern hardware (post-2015) on AROS systems, representing a significant technological leap forward for the system.

The 64 to 256 GB thumb drives that I work with, write at about 6 to 8 Mbps when they are in sync mode

In the beginning the drive seems to lie and shows speeds that are close to the absolute speed of the USB 3 Connection. In reality is not really a lie because the Linux Operating System loves to cache it's file systems, especially if they're native, like ext4

However the file system warns you never to remove the thumb drive until it's actually done writing. If you use something like Midnight Commander it will show you that the writing speed drops all the way down to six to eight megabytes a second!

That happens on both modern systems and on Old obsolete systems with just USB 2

Mmm… it seems that the newest #kernel on #Fedora, which is the first available in the 6.17 series, has broken the support for #USB3. It recognizes #USB 3 ports only as USB 2 and so doesn’t have all the functionality. For me, this means that my nice set up for multiple #displays no longer works correctly. Therefore, I have reverted to a 6.16 kernel until the problem’s fixed. Ho hum…

Un SSD #samsung da 256G dedicato a backup del blog, ISO varie ed eventuali: roba che se perdo poco importa.

Per #backup ho 1 #maxtor #usb3 che collego al bisogno.

Tutti con #luks + #ext4.

Il setup è ok, ma penso di mettere un disco meccanico da 4T in locale dedicato al backup incrementale ( #kup o #timeshift ) e poi questo lo copierò sul Maxtor esterno.

Its alive!!!
My 2TB portable #HDD that died earlier this week has now been repaired (by myself 😃 ).
The internal #SATA to #USB3 interface went ping.
I got a new, not like for like, replacement and with the help of a hacksaw, some snips and electrical tape it had been brought back to life.
The new SATA interface is a generic one that should work with any 2.5 internal HDD so I needed to cut a bit off the original portable HHD case.
Nice fix which only cost me £3.99 GBP and 15 minutes of my time.

Isn't the whole point of USB C that it's reversible? Yet when I plug my ereader into my PC one way, it doesn't charge or show up as attached. If I flip the connector, it does. Weird.

Looking for an USB hub that actually interfaces to the host (PC) with USB3.0 for USB2.0 client devices. All i can find are devices that have an USB3 and USB2 hub in one case. IOW: any usb2.0 client device is routed via USB2.0 pins to the host uplink.
(such an USB3 to USB2 bridge would be helpful to overcome the bandwidth limit when running multiple USB2.0 devices in parallel.) #usb #usb3
