@pluralistic
Im a little surprised to see you recommending #AdblockPlus here. I’ve been avoiding it for years because it has a very questionable reputation in my perception. Don’t they let advertisers pay them to let their ads through? I also seem to remember that they did a kind of hostile takeover of the original plugin.
Since those headlines I’ve been using #uBlockOrigin - happily. -

EasyList is planning to remove a large number of adservers at or around 6 AM European time Monday next week.
There have been concerns raised about if MV3 extensions can handle removing this many filters: https://github.com/w3c/webextensions/issues/319#issuecomment-4094568592
Both AdGuard and uBlock Origin have confirmed this should not be a problem for their extensions, as they bundle the rules with the extension rather than loading them dynamically.
The AdBlock Plus developers have requested EasyList remove the filters in chunks, due to concerns about issues. -

Hey #AdblockPlus, is this an "acceptable", or "nonintrusive" advert?

WTF?

I almost forgot an upcoming anniversary. 20 years ago I wrote this comment complaining about the state of the AdBlock extension: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=315754#c12. I’m trying to reconstruct from my emails what happened later (I didn’t archive IRC discussions unfortunately).
While the AdBlock devs claimed that everything was fine, on 2005-11-29 Mozilla was contacting everyone listed as an AdBlock contributor (myself included), trying to find someone who could update it for the Firefox 1.5 release. Mozilla already made the necessary adjustments on addons.mozilla.org but back then update manifests were self-hosted, and somebody had to modify the file on the AdBlock website. The only person with the necessary access was rue, the project maintainer at the time, everybody else could only stand by helplessly.
At some point over the next two weeks I convinced rue to let me improve code quality of AdBlock, with improved maintainability as one of the goals. I’m not sure when I started this work which turned into a complete rewrite (yes, the codebase was that bad) but on 2005-12-16 I was looking for people to help me test it, saying that the extension would be ready by tomorrow. It actually took one day longer, on 2005-12-18 I posted an almost finished version in a Russian-language web developers forum: https://web.archive.org/web/20061011145831/http://xpoint.ru/forums/programming/XUL/thread/34705.xhtml
That’s when rue got cold feet, they considered the changes too extensive. Things went quickly downhill from there, and I think one of the closing comments from them went along the lines of “developing a browser extension for millions of users takes more than a big mouth.” I don’t think AdBlock ever had millions of users.
On 2005-12-19 I was already trying to see where Mozilla stands on yet another AdBlock fork being published (a fork called Adblock Plus already existed, though it wasn’t listed on addons.mozilla.org). On 2005-12-21 I contacted the developers of Adblock Plus, asking them whether they would allow me to use the name of their project so that there aren’t two competing AdBlock forks around.
By 2006-01-10 I was done rewriting the rest of the code, and an allowlist functionality was added as well (originally I was prohibited from adding this feature, it being planned for AdBlock 0.6 which never got released). This is the changelog which I was sharing at that point: https://palant.info/temp/ABP_changelog.txt
On 2006-01-13 I got a permission from Adblock Plus devs to publish my code as Adblock Plus 0.6, sort of as an update to their project. At the same time rue seemed to have a change of heart once again, saying that I would be allowed to publish my rewrite as AdBlock 0.7. I didn’t quite trust this arrangement (rightfully so), so on 2006-01-14 I submitted an application for an Adblock Plus project page on mozdev.org.
Adblock Plus 0.6 has finally been published on 2006-01-17. The rest is history…

something is bringing me a lot of joy today - I'm catching up on one of my fav youtubers, and every 3 or 4 videos I get a little flash of a message that says "Adblockers are not allowed on YouTube"
But before I can read the whole message, my ad blocker gets rid of it 😁
Thank you #AdblockPlus

CW: Tale of the red giant and the little dwarves
Once upon a time, there was a red giant. It had a big white triangle nose, and really annoying behavior. It lived near a dwarf village and its hobby was to spy on the little dwarf villagers, and bully them by saying things like "Your suit is so ugly, you little astronaut guy!" and breaking the little red shields of the little dwarf soldiers. The little dwarf villagers often asked the annoying giant why it does this, but they didn't get any answer.
One day, the dwarf villagers had enough of this, they decided to fight the annoying red giant back. They picked up all knifes they found at home, then joined forces on the field next to the village. There were invidious dwarves with a knife juggler holding 4 knifes as their leader, Anime fan poking dwarves, piping dwarves who like to pipe commands in their tiny little penguin terminal, industrial worker dwarves who produce new pipes, cloud dwarves who like watching clouds on the sky when they're bored, blocker dwarves with red and green shields, some of them with white hand, others with U and B letters, white triangle, A and B and P letters or white checkmark painted on their shields. The astronaut dwarf also came to join the fight with its brave lion pet. Other pets also came to help their little owners, a whole army of octopuses came, holding knifes in their tentacles, riding elephants. Seeing the big crowd, the old dwarf whose snore is heard in the entire village as a loud rumble at nights, and the pilot dwarf who likes to chute from its plane a bit every day, also joined the crowd.
The army was ready to take the fight!
- For my librarian parents in heaven! - screamed the astronaut dwarf.
- For our Godfather Gorhill! - screamed the blocker dwarves.1/3

I know, I know, I use uBlock Origin, too!
Just asking, coz I remember reading something sus about them :blobcat3c:
Just want to confirm, as I can't find anything on the web! 😇

>> German #AxelSpringer.. is suing #Eyeo, makers of #AdblockPlus, on the grounds that changing HTML to block an ad creates a "derivative work" of Axel Springer's web-pages
INSERTING ads in other people’s work in web pages creates “derivative work” in the first place. The irony is rich.
