This dream involved me testing the Mozilla Firefox web browser with the Ghostery Tracker & Ad Blocker web browser extension.

I tested them online against many advertisement (ad) filled websites, especially bootleg websites.

This was all done from my desktop computer using the Linux distribution (distro) Ubuntu LTS.

My goal was to compare the ad blocking abilities between both of them.

I wanted to see if there was a difference.

Was there a difference between using the Ghostery web browser extension and it being built into the web browser?

I also wanted to see if it was worth using instead of Brave Browser or Mozilla Firefox with Ghostery installed.

At some point, my computer crashed / froze.

I started to worry as I feared that a malicious ad or something had done this.

Then I wondered why I did this from my computer.

I questioned why I did not use a virtual machine or a live USB with Ubuntu instead.

I probably was not even using private mode.

Then I hoped that I was not a victim of a session hijacking attack.

I did not want all of my passwords, browser cookies, et cetera stolen / copied.

I woke up as I restarted my computer, hoping for the best.

The hope was that Linux, Ubuntu, would be more resistant if my fears were correct.

I also prepared for the worst while wondering why I did something so stupid.

One thing to mention is that Safari supports extensions; it is more limited than on Firefox, but it works. Ghostery also has a Safari extension for iOS:

If you wonder why the app has little history (and only three reviews): two weeks ago, we moved the remaining Ghostery Inc parts to Ghostery GmbH. In the Apple store, it was surprising not possible to update the company. Thus, we had to create a new developer account and start from scratch. All Ghostery users that installed the app are now stuck on the old version and need to manually install the new one.

@fatboy I think some #Firefox forks like #LibreWolf are still worth a look. #librewolf May still rely on #Firefox but I think could easily break away if/when needed. It's not actually a bad thing to be based on #Firefox technology as it is open source, it's what #Mozilla is doing that sucks. #LibreWolf, at least for now, eliminates all the sketchy things that #Mozilla promotes which is good enough for me, for now. #ghostery is decent and I'm also using #Startpage browser on my phone.

Ghostery 10 (Manifest V3) has just been released on Chrome.

That completes the Manifest V3 migration on all our supported Chromium platforms. Supporting MV3 was not easy: Ghostery 10 is a major rewrite, started around two years ago; except for the core of the adblocker engine, it is a complete new code base.

TITLE: When Your HIPAA BAA Subcontractor Most Likely Means Well

Therapists are going to have to make an effort to educate our own BAA subcontractors about privacy.

Amongst therapists, privacy has always been paramount.

On the Internet, tracking has gone through several understandings. First, early webmasters were excited to get free website use statistics from Google Analytics. Then followed several years of tactics to effectively market ads following client computers around the Internet. Now, there is an awareness of that data as valuable in-and-of-itself.

Recently there is a new awareness that data other than name, SSI, address, & diagnosis CAN be considered PHI (Protected Health Information) when it is specific enough to ID the patient. Also when a data aggregator (tracking the same client across the Net) can obtain & combine data from multiple websites to build a composite file on the client. Browser cookies, pixels, beacons, mobile application identifiers, Adobe Flash technology, and IP address geolocation data can all be used -- in conjunction with websites visited -- to figure out specific individuals. Also growing is an awareness that this data can be used for something other than just targeted advertising -- like in the recent Washington Post story in which the Planned Parenthood website was inadvertently sending data to Facebook and others -- which in theory could be used by hostile state governments to prosecute women for their medical choices. Therapists are going to have to make an effort to educate our own BAA subcontractors about privacy -- especially in cases where its not clear if HIPAA laws are being broken. Especially in cases where the subcontractors -- coming from the Internet world -- might not know better.

There are the more egregious cases (like BetterHelp sharing clear PHI data) -- situations in which therapists should walk or run away from the company. Then there are less clear cases where we need to change the mindset of our BAA subcontractors if possible.

Many of them may not understand the evolving definition of PHI. Their marketing/webdev teams may not talk with legal. They may just put together a required data consent policy with everything in it including the kitchen sink whether or not they actually collect it to "cover themselves". This needs tuning for their HIPAA clients. They may communicate with sites for legit use known to track (like fonts.google.com which provides fonts and is used by about every webmaster on earth).

If you want to see some of the URLs that your BAA subcontractors communicate with, You can double-check them by installing Ghostery and Privacy Badger in the Firefox browser (and maybe others) and checking which connections they warn you about or block when you go to those sites. This won't tell you WHAT data is communicated, only that SOME data is communicated (and if these services think they are a security risk). Knowing what data is actually sent would require someone with expertise in a packet sniffing software such as Wire Shark.
