  2. Okay, the discussions lately have convinced me that my thinking is a bit off.

On the one hand, rejecting Fedora Linux because it’s now owned by IBM via Red Hat - which is a U.S. Big Tech company -and on the other hand, installing Windows on a computer for that very reason... the anger over Trump and the omnipotence of U.S. tech companies (and Trump’s political abuse of them) really does make my brain short-circuit sometimes... So moving forward: less hyperventilating, more fresh air into the brain.

At the end of the day, it’s still a thousand times better to go with Fedora than with Microsoft. That’s why I’ll be using Fedora again - also because, with version 45, my 5G modem finally works in my ThinkPad, something that hadn’t worked on any Linux distribution before. And as a dual-boot system on my NUC 16 PRO, where Fedora is also the only Linux distribution that runs without any issues.

The other two mini-PCs will stick with Debian Testing, which works wonderfully on them given their age.

And then there’s also my ThinkPad P51 running FreeBSD.

If you've lost track of which system I'm currently using on which computer, you can check my website for details.

Even during my time away from Fedora, I always believed that Fedora is by far simply the best Linux distribution. No other distribution is quite as trouble-free and advanced - the perfect mix of up-to-date features and stability.

As a Red Hat Linux user since 1997 and then on board since Fedora Core 1, I regretted - from a technical standpoint - having to switch to another, non-U.S.-based system for political reasons.

  3. I've been hoping that FreeBSD will block LLM contributions given the substantial risk of harm they represent, and digging for information has been painful. It's unfortunate that the process is happening behind closed doors.

I found a chilling link on the forums:

    forums.freebsd.org/threads/a-d

The proposal linked there is deeply worrisome. See:

    >> 4.1. General Rule: Copyright Ownership <<

    >> As a general principle, if an AI service’s terms of service allow it, the copyright of generated code belongs to the user who prompted the model. However, each service has specific conditions that may restrict this ownership or limit how the generated code can be used. <<

This appears to be factually incorrect. For reasoning, we can lookat the United States Copyright Office paper on the topic, and specifically on the copyrightability of generated works:

    copyright.gov/ai/Copyright-and

Specifically, check out section IV, The Arguments for Legal Change, and in that, specifically paragraph three:

"Most commenters that opined on this issue, however, agreed with the Office’s view that the Copyright Clause requires human authorship. They supported the conclusion that AI-generated material can only be protected where there is sufficient human involvement or where AI is used as a tool to enhance human expression."

And again, from the OpenJDK Interim Policy:

    openjdk.org/legal/ai

...we read: "Whether a user of a generative AI tool has IP rights in content generated by the tool is the subject of active litigation."

On the other end of the question, it's worth remembering that AI training on copyrighted material has been ruled to not be fair use:

    courthousenews.com/ai-training

There are ethical and moral reasons to avoid LLMs and what's currently called generative AI, and it would be encouraging if more folks cared about them. But in the absense of ethics and morals, hopefully at least the legal hurdles will outweigh the vigorous support of the subset of FreeBSD developers captured by the siren's song of free mental labour.

  5. From <vivianvoss.net/blog/ubuntu-cor>:

"... On FreeBSD it costs what it has cost since 1994: one tree, one build, one release, and the rm that was tested beside the kernel it ships with. …"

    – no mention of bugs over the past three decades.

The preceding paragraph portrays the cost on Linux in a very different way.

    Sigh.

  6. I’m genuinely interested in the state of the rivalry between FreeBSD and NetBSD in 2026. I ask because:

    - I see much more about NetBSD on Mastodon these days

    - I just did initial installs of both for some testing I’m doing. FreeBSD’s install and initial package setup felt much more sensible and friendly than NetBSD’s.

The latter makes me wonder if there’s something I’m missing about the former.

  7. Resolution independence: the same desktop, rendered on a simulated 27" screen, in 4K and 720p. Plus a zoomed-in comparison shot showing the pixels up close and personal.

In Agora, more resolution means things get sharper, not smaller.

  9. NetBSD - a nuanced discussion about what to do with upstream slop, about not having the resources to fork the world & yet not wanting to ship unpatched bugs.

OpenBSD - a slop generated dick pic with LOLZ written across it in MS Paint.

    FreeBSD - a Netflix ad.

  10. is there a good Qubes alternative? I love Qubes but it doesn’t play well with my NVIDIA card, so I really need to pick something else

    current ideas include:

FreeBSD (can I run GUI apps in jails without hassle?)

One of those immutable distros like fedora silverblue

sinking a thousand years into cooking a gentoo install to my liking

  11. Tomorrow, Saturday, October 24, 2026, I'll be speaking at Linux Day in Modena, with a talk titled "Beyond Linux: A Journey Through the Open Source Ecosystem."

Will I talk about Linux? Of course. But I'll also talk about BSD, illumos, monocultures, and why we should never forget that there are always other paths worth exploring.

Linux proved that an alternative was possible. It would be a shame if that alternative became, in turn, a new imposition.

Because monocultures are a problem, even in the Open Source world. And because freedom isn't about everyone doing things the same way, but about being able to choose a different way.

Open Source and closed minds don't mix.

  13. ZDNet: GridCraft is the open-source Excel clone for Linux I’ve been waiting for. “You might be thinking that this is simply a rebranded MS Excel that runs on top of an interpretation or abstraction layer, but that is not the case. Like the other ArtCraft apps, GridCraft runs natively on whatever OS you are using (Linux, FreeBSD, MacOS, or Windows). And because these apps were written in Rust, […]

  15. Further on the f... up yesterday.
Assessing Microsoft's current app strategy "pest or cholera" may be a tad brutal, but I maintain that it IS accurate!
Microsoft have caught us right in the middle of two distinct design failures:

    1. Electron overhead. The so-called desktop apps may work and show documents "correctly", but they have sooo much overhead they swallow gigs of RAM, leak memory, and return "Not Responding" for long periods of time.
    2. Cloud-first (read lock-in). "Traditional" real apps held local state and sync'ed in the background. Now it seems that all the telemetry, licensing, and co-authoring stuff is just blocking everything. On top of that, the web-apps are not rendering documents to look like the way the do in the desktop apps - So while they're less "Not Responding", they look like shite.

Anyways... Let's support each others - and the companies around us - in getting off that shit. Will it be perfect? Certainly not, but at least it'll be a fresh start :)

  16. Back story: Have a deliverable that needs finished ASAP and MUST be done using Corp Asset based on Windows and MS365. And while I have made all the hard work on other platforms, the last mile consolidating this in word in a shared document has been more inefficient than me carving it in rocks and hauling it to the rest of the team.

It does, only if viewing a file (not a stream), and only temporarily, after pressing Ctrl-G.

OH WAIT! less -m causes it to be persistent! HUZZAH!

But it still doesn't work for streams. :/

I'd recommend buying an old (unlocked) Pixel phone on Swappa or ebay and trying out something like #IodéOS. It's pretty easy to install, as I recall. Holler at me if you need any tips, I've been livin' DAT de-googled #Android life for five years now. ;)

  22. @hyde @amin @eclecticpassions @nantucketlit @birming

I like #NoVIMber, even though it starts with a No.

It's kind of like when the transliteration for Persian New Year, "Noruz" got changed to "Nowruz," because people didn't like the fact that it started with a "no."
But then it reads like now-ruz (instead of nor-rooz)... which is terrible. XD

So, I guess we just gotta accept that NoVIMber starts with a "no." ;)

  23. I miss daily #blogging. My September Gratitude [series] was very enjoyable to write, very life-giving. Considering how much work it was, I only had four entries that were less than 100 words (i.o.w., only four "It's 23:50, I'm exhausted, and I have to post SOMETHING" entries). (And only 7 entries that were posted after 23:30 at all ;)

What are you guys queuing up for November/#WritingMonth?
