Further on the f... up yesterday.
Assessing Microsoft's current app strategy "pest or cholera" may be a tad brutal, but I maintain that it IS accurate!
Microsoft have caught us right in the middle of two distinct design failures:
- Electron overhead. The so-called desktop apps may work and show documents "correctly", but they have sooo much overhead they swallow gigs of RAM, leak memory, and return "Not Responding" for long periods of time.
- Cloud-first (read lock-in). "Traditional" real apps held local state and sync'ed in the background. Now it seems that all the telemetry, licensing, and co-authoring stuff is just blocking everything. On top of that, the web-apps are not rendering documents to look like the way the do in the desktop apps - So while they're less "Not Responding", they look like shite.
Anyways... Let's support each others - and the companies around us - in getting off that shit. Will it be perfect? Certainly not, but at least it'll be a fresh start :)
