  2. 【Brazil Re-Elects Lula for Historic Fourth Term, Bolsonaro Refuses to Concede】

    https://time.com/article/2026/10/26/brazil-lula-bolsonaro-presidential-election-trump/

Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has been re-elected to a historic fourth term as Brazil’s President after a tight race with far-right opponent, Flávio Bolsonaro, the son of former President and Donald Trump ally Jair Bolsonaro.Lula won with 51.8% of the vote to Bolsonaro’s 48.2%, Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court announced. Sunday’s vote was a rematch after neither reached an outright majority in the first round on Oct. 4. Lula had trailed then, becoming now the first presidential candidate since Brazil’s return to democracy in 1985 to finish second in the initial vote and win the run-off.
While Lula is hardly the super-leftist the media makes him out to be, his opponent Flavio is an obvious Trump puppet who would outright hand Brazil to the US, so this is a definite win for Brazil. Though we can't be complacent--it's very clear that the US has been willing to take by force what it can't take through deception.

    VOX-POP, Friday, November 20 at 03:30 PM GMT+1

CEDLA and Humanities Venture Lab host a film screening of Un Día Soleado: A documentary about a young woman’s fight against an 80-year political machine in Paraguay.

In the heart of South America, Un Día Soleado follows a woman vice-presidential candidate, Soledad Núñez, and her campaign team as they attempt to win Paraguay's 2023 election by breaking the conservative Colorado Party's near-80-year grip on power. The intimate, observational documentary captures a young generation's struggle to hold on to their faith in democracy while confronting corruption, sexism, populism, and the ghosts of South America's
    longest dictatorship.
The screening of the film will be followed by a Q&A with its director Pamela Kalkman, a
Dutch-Paraguayan documentary maker, researcher and journalist.

  5. Mike McCarthy says the Veterans are leading the way for the younger Steeler players: “I think our veterans have done a great job of giving back, and our young guys are responding. It's a challenge every year. You look at your veterans and your young players, and there's always a gap between them. Over time, you see that gap start to close, and that's important. You have to keep winning while it happens, too. Our young guys are playing meaningful snaps, and they're contributing. That's been a big part of what we're building.” #Steelers #NFL

  6. Mike McCarthy praises the Veteran Leadership with the Steelers: “Our young defensive linemen have played well. They're doing some really good things. Cam has done an excellent job with his leadership and the way he gives back. Veterans can offer so much in the little things, whether it's something they say during a one-on-one drill, a quick conversation in the weight room, or a point they make while watching film. It's a lot like parenting. You tell your kids something two or three times, but then if Aaron Rodgers, Cam Heyward, or T.J. Watt says the same thing, it's like they've never heard it before. That's just the reality of it.” #Steelers #NFL

  11. Until now the CV on my website (a PDF) was created and maintained simply in Pages. But it kinda sucked to have to make changes in Pages, export to PDF, use PDF Squeezer on it, commit it to my website's repo... It didn't use the same fonts, different colors, and keeping it in sync was a hassle.

From now on the source of truth is a Markdown file in my website, which gets rendered as a page on my site, plus as a downloadable PDF. One Markdown file to maintain, in my website, free from Apple's document format.

All handled by Saga, my static site generator (and weasyprint for the actual PDF generation).

I should probably write up an article with website details, how everything works. It's getting more and more interesting!

  12. I'm not sure whether something similar could work in France, or whether there's still enough time in Spain, but one interesting aspect of Lula's victory in Brazil was a WhatsApp channel led by congressman André Janones that grew to more than 10 million followers in just three weeks.

The channel gave supporters concrete tasks, encouraged them to take to the streets, and, perhaps most importantly, kept morale high by reinforcing the belief that victory was still possible.

The goal was to mobilize people to engage with undecided voters, as well as those who had abstained or cast blank or invalid ballots in the first round.

I think it's an interesting example of how online mobilization can translate into real-world political action, rather than simply generating likes and shares.

It also illustrates how political movements can become less dependent on Big Tech's algorithms, even while using one of their platforms.

  15. A major challenge of alternative #search engines seems to be that they have to be *reliable* in the sense that they should work, always.

Web search is an essential tool and if it's not available or quality noticeably degrades (hard to monitor!), that's a major headache for users.

One can argue that you can temporarily go to a different engine, but you have a preferred engine for good reasons (e.g. customizations, UI, etc.). When you have a car you like and used to you probably will struggle even with a very good replacement you got while yours is at the shop.

  17. Monday Monster: Haliborb

    for use with Dragonbane RPG.

    Description:
This bizarre floating creature seems as if it would be at home in another dimension entirely. It has the sleek, streamlined body of a halibut except its head has one large eyeball in the middle surrounded by smaller eyeballs on whisker-like tentacle stalks. The creature’s toothy mouth is situated below the massive center eye. The creature is only medium size, however. If it weren’t flying about and intelligent, one would almost dismiss it as a magical anomaly.

    Resistance:
Immune to illusion, charm, and mind control effects. The creature is surrounded with a magical field that gives it Armor 3. It also gives a Bane on any Missile or ranged spell attacks while the field is active. Disabling two or more eye stalks removes this field or when the creature reaches 10 hp or less.

Any creature seeing a Haliborb for the first time must make a WIL roll. Failure means the character must roll on the Fear table due to the creature’s reality-bending nature. After the initial encounter, characters need not ever make this roll again for the Haliborb.

This creature is highly intelligent and will negotiate, but its motives are often unfathomable and alien in nature.

    Ferocity: 3  Size: Medium.
Movement: 12 (Flying or Swimming) If somehow grounded, 2.  Armor: 3  HP: 24

    MONSTER ATTACKS

    D6 Attacks:

    1. Bend Reality: Being in the presence of this creature is enough to drive some characters mad. All creatures within 10 meters of the Haliborb must make a WIL roll or become Disheartened and lose 1d6 WP. If already Disheartened, choose or roll a different condition.
    2. Main Eye Beam: One target within 20 meters is seared with a ray of light hotter than the sun. If the target is struck with the beam it takes 2d10 burning damage. Any creature or character in a straight line between Haliborb
    3. Halihaboob: Haliborb sends out a wall of dust, debris, spores, and arcane energy in a line 10 meters wide, 4 meters deep, and 10 meters high that deals 1d10 damage and afflicts a hacking respiratory disease Virulence 10 (See Dragonbane Core Rules.) The haboob travels 60 meters before dissipating. Anything in the path of the wall takes a Bane on their Evade roll and this attack cannot be parried. Armor has no effect against this wall.
    4. Pew! The Haliborb’s smaller eyes fire beams of intense light that converge on one target within 20 meters that inflict 2d6 lightning damage. This attack can be parried as a missile weapon.
    5. Pew-pew Pew! The Haliborb fires its smaller eye stalks hitting every target within 16 meters for 1d8 fire damage. This attack can be parried as a missile weapon.
    6. Tail Slap! One target within 2 meters is slapped for 1d6 bludgeoning damage and knocked prone until the start of their turn.

SPECIAL: If Haliborb falls below 10 HP on its next turn it will abruptly give off a blinding flash accompanied with a loud POP as it leaves its current dimension and goes to one where it is safe. Anyone looking on the Haliborb when this happens must roll AGI to cover their eyes/avert their gaze or be blinded for 3 turns. Anyone within 4 meters must also make a CON roll to avoid being deafened for one Stretch.

  18. A UN inquiry finds that Israeli authorities and forces committed crimes against humanity in the West Bank, including extermination, torture, rape and other sexual violence. It also finds that Israel continues to commit genocide in Gaza.

Here are paragraphs 58 to 61 of the report’s conclusions, quoted in full, with the footnote marker omitted:

    III. Conclusions

    58. Since the 1947-48 war, Israel has continuously striven to expand territorially and displace Palestinians through violence. The intentional killing and harming of Palestinians have clear demographic and ethnic considerations that stem from Israel’s colonising policies: seizing maximum land while minimizing the Palestinian population in relation to size, autonomy and viability. Such policies originate in historical practices and patterns of action and have resulted in the excessive and discriminatory application of lethal force, displacing and killing Palestinians over several generations, causing life-long physical or mental harm and disabilities. The Commission has repeatedly called for an end to the occupation, which has been ruled unlawful under international law, and an end to the cycle of increasing violence. Palestinians must be able to realize their right of self-determination.

    59. Israeli state violence has accelerated since October 2023 and has, since the establishment of Israel, never claimed or impacted as many lives in the Occupied Palestinian Territory. Over 75,000 Palestinians across the Occupied Palestinian Territory have been killed since 7 October 2023, including at least 21,500 children, and 11,000 women. While Israeli authorities and security forces continue to commit genocide in Gaza, the situation in the West Bank has deteriorated drastically. Israeli military operations, complemented by sustained settler violence, form part of a widespread and systematic attack against the civilian population in the West Bank since 7 October 2023. Accordingly, the Commission concludes that the Israeli authorities and forces have committed the crimes against humanity of extermination, torture, rape and other forms of sexual violence in the West Bank, as well as persecution based on intersecting discriminatory grounds, with nationality, race and ethnicity at its core.

    60. Sexual violence as a tactic of war has been used to displace, subjugate and destabilize the Palestinian people by humiliating and punishing on individual and collective levels. It includes the gravest forms, such as rape, reproductive violence and other forms of sexual violence also amounting to torture. People of all genders, ages and sexual orientations have been targeted for being Palestinian or due to their perceived political affiliation and support for the rights of Palestinians. The prevalence of sexual violence has been and continues to be widely reported, and met with almost complete impunity, indicating a tacit support of such practices by the Israeli authorities. Impunity for gender-based crimes against Palestinians indicates unwillingness, rather than inability, to act, underscoring the systematic and structural nature of the discrimination against Palestinians. Those responsible need to be punished to dismantle the permissive policy currently in place to guarantee non-recurrence.

    61. Across the Occupied Palestinian Territory, Israeli forces deliberately killed and caused serious bodily and mental harm to Palestinian children on account of their status as Palestinian children. The Commission concludes that Israeli authorities and forces committed age-based persecution against Palestinian children in the West Bank, as they did in Gaza, which is a crime against humanity. The recurrence and widespread nature of attacks causing grave physical injuries and psychological harm demonstrate that the harm inflicted on children is not incidental or collateral to the broader violence affecting civilian population, but forms part of a pattern of intentional violence directed against Palestinian children. Notably, the absence of accountability has entrenched a discriminatory system in which violations and crimes against Palestinian children are repeatedly committed with impunity, normalized, and left without effective remedy or redress.”

  20. I have been meaning to revisit and expand the thing I wrote about how generative AI is fascist because it intrinsically de-contextualises and aestheticises¹. But then there is also the other part where people love chatbots for the same reason they talk too much at meetings, especially when showing up for the first time in left-y spaces: everyone feels so damn lonely and powerless. Having a space where you are heard is so rare.

It’s Benjamin’s: “Fascism attempts to organise the newly created proletarian masses without affecting the property structure which the masses strive to eliminate. Fascism sees its salvation in giving these masses not their right, but instead a chance to express themselves. The masses have a right to change property relations; Fascism seeks to give them an expression while preserving property. The logical result of Fascism is the introduction of aesthetics into political life.”

… but more atomic and more melancholic. The masses haven't dissolved but there is also something else.

Maybe writing out the first part will help me resolve the second part?

[1: And if that doesn't make sense … that's exactly why I have been meaning to revisit and expand the thing I wrote :blobcatfingerguns:]

  22. CW: harms of AI rant

But it's not that oh, maybe it really is alive and these people are being convinced by very reasonable arguments, because they're not. It *does shit to people* when they expose themselves to this third thing that is probably the closest we'll ever get to creating a "philosophical zombie."

Forced AI use is forced harm. It's like deliberately exposing people to a debilitating virus. That we're trying to inflict this upon children under the premise of "preparing them for the future" is appalling. It's straight-up child abuse, and it's no less abhorrent when applied against adults.

It seems dramatic to write, but I feel like future historians are going to see the rapid development and deployment of AI as a kind of foolish biological attack against the populace, a tech that superficially steals labour but also does something cognitively harmful that we don't fully understand.

Check all of EDRi's thread for a summary of the concerns with Europe's Digital Omnibus package [and why the Council is asking to be set on fire].

But this point REALLY is worth emphasizing.

Pretty much any business pushing (gen)AI —very much without exception business which you want to protect detour data from— can and will now use this as a excuse to expand their already toxic and extractive practices to ALL personal data [from EU citizens].

And every other who somehow isn't yet can (and also will) just add something “AI” and jump into the excuse.

I don't see how this could be different in effect from giving corporations blanket permissions over any and all personal data.
