The EU reaches tentative deal on simpler AI rules.
European Union member nations and European Parliament lawmakers have reached a provisional deal on watered-down landmark artificial intelligence rules as part of European Commission’s so-called digital omnibus package.
The deal agrees a ban on the use of AI for creating pornographic deepfakes and sexualised imagery.

Digital Omnibus on AI: provisional agreement reached early on 7 May 2026 — nine days after the failed 28 April trilogue.
Application dates confirmed (Dec 2027 / Aug 2028 / Dec 2026 watermarking), machinery products to sectoral discipline + equivalence clause, new Art. 5 ban on nudifiers and AI-generated CSAM.
Until formal adoption, the original AI Act remains in effect.

Der Trilog zum Digital Omnibus ist nach langen Verhandlungen ohne politische Einigung beendet worden.
Die ursprüngliche Frist des AI Act, 02.08.2026, gilt weiter. Die Pflichten für Hochrisiko-KI treten am ursprünglich geplanten Tag in Kraft. Nicht wie es im Omnibus vorgesehen war, im Dezember 2027 oder August 2028.
Folge-Trilog ist für den 13.05.2026 angesetzt.

"On 19 November 2025, the European Commission published its Digital Omnibus package, a legislative proposal to amend the AI Act, the GDPR, the ePrivacy Directive, the Data Act, and several cybersecurity frameworks in a single stroke. The word “simplification” appeared 23 times in the accompanying press release.
Six days earlier, a coalition of 127 civil society organisations had already published an open letter warning that the package would amount to, in their words, the biggest rollback of digital fundamental rights in EU history.
The Commission chose the word “simplification” carefully. Nobody opposes simplification. Simplification sounds like tidying a desk.
What the Omnibus actually proposes is something altogether more consequential: delaying the AI Act’s core obligations for high-risk systems by up to 16 months, creating a new legitimate interest basis under the GDPR for companies training AI models on personal data, narrowing the definition of personal data itself, and removing the obligation for AI providers and deployers to ensure staff AI literacy."
