Es dürfte kurz nach dem Kriege gewesen sein, daß man von dem englischen Bühnenexperiment »Hamlet im Frack« hörte. Man hat damals viel über diesen Versuch debattiert; vielleicht genügt es hier, das Paradoxon festzuhalten, das Stück sei zu modern, um modernisiert zu werden. Fraglos hat es Epochen gegeben, die Entsprechendes, ohne bewußte Zwecke damit zu verfolgen, unternehmen konnten; es ist bekannt, daß in den Mysterienspielen des Mittelalters genau wie auf den gleichzeitigen Bildern die Figuren in Kostümen der Zeit auftraten. Aber gewiß ist, daß dergleichen heute der genauesten künstlerischen Besinnung entstammen muß, um mehr zu sein als snobistischer Scherz.

Hold your position, make tactical retreats if necessary, but keep the core of truth alive.
The tide is moving against us, in so many dimensions. Covid brought upon us a new wave of eugenicism; the far right is on the rise everywhere; genAI threatens our mental autonomy. The US constitional arrangement disintegrates. Big Business has taken over the UK Labour government. The horrors of the Middle East.
All of these developments amplify each other. There is no way for us to succeed against this powerful confluence of developments just right now. Things will get worse still.
But the tide will turn, eventually.
Our task is to maintain islands of integrity, wherever we can. To maintain a living memory of what it means to speak the truth, to be kind, to be authentic, to recognise facts, to listen.
That will not always be possible, but try we must.

I will observe, but not comment further, on the ironic juxtaposition of #WalterBenjamin's name being right next to a private bank (any bank for that matter). That said, I was very happy to see #Benjamin's name several times while I had the good fortune to be in #Paris. Not only this street sign but in the #Museum of #Decorative #Arts, which had an exhibition about the birth of the #departmentstore, his words about #fetishism & the #flaneur were present.
