To continue the story of my exploration of the #IBM #Power5 in a time before I got job working with it.
Installed Virtual I/O Server (#VOIS) which I felt then was way ahead of vmware during this time. Really nicely integrated software with hardware with the virtual terminals of each OS accessible from VIOS CLI
Installed #AIX v5 and later 6 and of course I also had to try out #Linux on #Power / #PowerPC even though it's the familiar stuff, but always fun to run it on more exotic hardware.

hey so. looking for a job (NZ or fully remote willing to hire a kiwi) in SRE, security, or linux/Unix system administration. 15 years experience administering Linux and Unix boxes, intermediate level of experience working with docker compose and containerisation and container security. No prior job experience unfortunately, all those 15 years were mostly personal projects and small-scale stuff for friends. I'm also 26, so I started when I was 11, explaining the no jobs so far. Currently running an entire multi-machine personal cloud infrastructure with a demonstration of all the services I have running at https://status.highenergymagic.net. Three machines, 72 docker containers. One running most of them, one running Mastodon+glitchsocial, one running the uptime monitor. encrypted root on ZFS, alpine linux, gVisor on supported containers, plan to move to Kata. Entirely willing to accept entry-level job placements, no expectation of being paid a lot or anything, just want to be doing something and move the needle a little on my current "being broke" status. […] Eccolo dunque, Nanni, organizzatore di cultura sovversiva, produttore di riviste politiche. Quelle cose, quelle macchine non erano mai «sue» ma appunto «dei compagni» che lui metteva al lavoro. La sua generosità era vincente, sempre, il suo lavoro quello di un’impresa comunista. Qualche tempo fa, lavorando su «Assemblea», e discutendo con Michael Hardt la figura di una nuova proposta teorica, quella dell’«imprenditore politico della moltitudine», mi sono venute in mente le esperienze di Nanni negli anni ’70. Come definire un imprenditore della moltitudine? Come un «meccanico» che assembla i pezzi di una macchina, meglio, per stare nella letteratura, come un autore che trasforma il «volgare» in lingua. Non è un inventore, ma qualcuno che recupera quanto fa parte dell’esperienza comune, in essa collaudato, e ne fa cosa praticabile, una nuova macchina. Ecco l’opera di Nanni messa in luce, questa sua capacità di far diventare «arte» il mettere insieme cose ed eventi, linguaggi ed emozioni politiche e di trasformare pallide avanguardie comuniste in macchine da guerra.
Nanni, il meccanico, non ha mai sognato orizzonti gloriosi nel comunismo realizzato. Nanni ha sempre vissuto la realtà quotidiana del lavoro militante. Disdegnava radicalmente l’utopia e vantava la propria amoralità comunista. Non pensava al futuro ma già viveva nell’avvenire. Ci ho pensato tanto a questa capacità di Nanni di farti sentire «naturale» nelle situazioni più avventurose e a confronto del pensiero critico. […]
Era così semplice stare assieme, fare le cose assieme. Io, Nanni, l’ho davvero amato. Mi ci ritrovavo, con lui, in quel suo «fare» senza troppo pensarci su, perché era più importante pensare facendo, costruendo. Il criterio, la misura stavano nel fare. La laicità di Nanni era tutta qui: una laicità sovversiva, un piacere della «superficie» in tumulto, alla Deleuze, alla Guattari (con i quali da vicino l’avrebbe poi condiviso), un’allegria della singolarità, dell’immanenza, senza il problema (o l’ossessione) di negare quel che non c’era o non valeva, come la trascendenza o l’autorità.Il nuovo Meccano
[…] Siamo stati bene, passando le notti a comporre «Potere operaio», o a discutere senza costrutto su come riempire «Compagni,». Abbiamo girato l’Italia per contattare amici intellettuali dispersi e mezz’Europa alla ricerca di un Osvaldo furioso, abbiamo lavorato insieme (un nuovo «meccano» balestriniano) a costruire Ae&a – una piattaforma logistica, oggi si direbbe, per le mille imprese editoriali della moltitudine autonoma. «alfabeta» nascerà anch’essa di lì. Calogero trasformò presto questa iniziativa in «associazione di malfattori», in delinquenza organizzata. Poi vennero Rebibbia, Fossombrone, Palmi, Trani, per me. Per Nanni, Parigi, e poi Aix-en-Provence. Che cosa avrebbe fatto, isolato da quel suo Heimat che aveva costruito? Ce lo chiedevamo, ritenendo che il poeta fosse più in difficoltà dei suoi rozzi compagni. E invece, con Giairo a lato, Nanni associò gli intellettuali attorno a Deleuze e a Faye in «trasversali» letterarie e politiche – «Change International» – che permisero alla sinistra sovversiva di togliere spazio e fortuna (comunque di resistere) all’ennesima invasione dei Rosacroce, all’irrazionalismo reazionario dei nouveaux philosophes.

[…] Una nuova primavera, questa, per Nanni, che nella fuga dalla repressione feroce dei Calogero, dei Dalla Chiesa, del «compromesso storico» ritrovava il senso del gioco e dell’avventura.
I collage cominciano allora. Un’incredibile agilità dell’epico e dell’ironico si combinano dentro questo nuovo meccano. Quei giornali che aveva organizzato, ora Nanni comincia (e lo farà tanto più rientrando in Italia alla fine degli ’80) a ritagliarli e a ricostruire figure e manifesti di un’avventura già repressa, ma sempre di nuovo risorgente e sempre più radicalmente sovversiva! Un insegnamento deleuziano: quanto rivoluzionari potevano essere, quanto potenti quei semplici frammenti di materia varia, in superficie danzanti.
In Italia intanto il potere e i letterati del «Corriere della Sera» puntavano sull’oblio di «Vogliamo tutto». Non c’è intervista fatta a Nanni in quei tempi nella quale, benevolmente e ipocritamente, non gli si chiedesse se non era pentito di aver scritto «Vogliamo tutto», quel capolavoro della letteratura operaista che resta, a oggi, uno dei più bei romanzi del Novecento. In 1988, I started using Unix at IBM (as AIX) on its RT workstations. In 1999, learned C programming on a #Sequent minicomputer. In 2001, I bought an iMac with OS X (BSD), and installed X windows to run OpenOffice.
I started experimenting with Linux when I still had to download and compile source code, and dabbled with #Fedora . (I recently noticed an old copy of Fedora 10.) I got into #Ubuntu around 2010. This year, I installed and already like the new #FedordaWorkstation39 , upon which I've been running #KiCAD (and a bunch of other stuff) with nice results.
It seems like there's always something new to learn about computers.

#plptools update!
Haiku
The #HaikuOS port is now mostly working, with caveats. Everything compiles except
plpfuse, which might require migratingplpfuseto FUSE3. I've been able to send and receive files usingplpftp, but RS232 DSR checking has to be disabled in the code. I don't want to speak too soon as it could very well be my mistake, but there might be a bug in Haiku's implementation ofioctl()for serial ports. Stay tuned...FreeBSD
The #FreeBSD port currently has issues with linking to readline, but I'm sure that's fixable. However, a different issue has come up involving FreeBSD's implementation of the
timezoneglobal variable. This, in turn, might have uncovered some very old, slightly iffy code when working out timezone offsets.Other platforms
The #macOS port is running fine at the moment, thanks to @captfab and @jbmorley's sterling work. If you're on macOS, check out Reconnect.
I'd like to resurrect the #NetBSD port for a few reasons, not least because you can still run the current release of NetBSD on a Series 5. I have no experience with NetBSD, so that's my challenge for this afternoon.
There are indications that plptools has at some point worked on #HPUX, #IRIX and #AIX. I personally feel that these ports probably don't need to be resurrected.
The code also mentions #Solaris - I'd certainly consider working on an #IllumOS port, if people were interested.
Interestingly, there's no mention of #OpenBSD, but again I would consider working on that if people are interested.
This is very much a *NIX/POSIX suite of tools. A Windows port isn't going to happen any time soon, unless someone wants to try building it using cygwin. I'm not saying it will never happen, but it's not a priority.
Misc
A couple of small bugs have been squashed by Reuben, including an issue where logging didn't go to
stdoutwhen using the--autoexitswitch. -
Some #Psion news! #plptools, the open source suite of programs for transferring files to and from #EPOC16 and #EPOC32 devices, has some additional maintainers: @captfab, @jbmorley ... and me!
We're looking into how we can take the project into the future. We do have some ideas, but we're taking a considered approach to future development.
plptools currently runs on Linux and macOS (and possibly FreeBSD, NetBSD, Solaris, AIX and HP-UX, although these haven't been tested in a while). I've started work on porting it to #HaikuOS.

Four New Publications at the Open Journal of Astrophysics
It’s Satuday morning once again so here’s another quick update of activity at the Open Journal of Astrophysics. Since the last update a week ago we have published four papers, which takes the count in Volume 7 (2024) up to 114 and the total published altogether by OJAp up to 229. If we publish just one more paper between now and the end of the year, we will have published as many papers in 2024 as we have in all previous years.
Anyway, in chronological order of publication, the four papers published this week, with their overlays, are as follows. You can click on the images of the overlays to make them larger should you wish to do so.
First one up is “Star formation beyond galaxies: widespread in-situ formation of intra-cluster stars” by Niusha Ahvazi & Laura V. Sales (UC Riverside, USA), Julio F. Navarro (U. Victoria, Canada), Andrew Benson (Carnegie Obs. USA), Alessandro Boselli (Aix Marseille U., France) and Richard D’Souza (Vatican Obs.). The paper, which is in the folder marked Astrophysics of Galaxies, The paper presents a simulation-based analysis of a diffuse star forming component in galaxy clusters extending for hundreds of kiloparsecs and tracing the distribution of neutral gas in the cluster host halo.

The second paper to announce, published on 10th December 2024 in the folder Cosmology and NonGalactic Astrophysics, is “Cosmological Constraints from Combining Photometric Galaxy Surveys and Gravitational Wave Observatories” by E.L. Gagnon, D. Anbajagane, J. Prat, C. Chang, and J. Frieman (all of U. Chicago, USA). This article quantifies the expected cosmological information gain from combining the forecast LSST 3x2pt analysis with the large-scale auto-correlation of GW sources from proposed next-generation GW experiments.

The third paper, also published on 10th December 2024, but in the folder marked Earth and Planetary Astrophysics, has the title “A potential exomoon from the predicted planet obliquity of β Pictoris b” and is written by Michael Poon, Hanno Rein, and Dang Pham all of the University of Toronto, Canada. It presents discussion, based on the β Pictoris system, of the idea that the presence of exomoons can excite misalignment between the spin and orbit axis (obliquity) in exoplanet systems

Last of this quartet, published on 11th December 2024, and in the folder Cosmology and NonGalactic Astrophysics is “Map-level baryonification: Efficient modelling of higher-order correlations in the weak lensing and thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich fields” and is by Dhayaa Anbajagane & Shivam Pandey (U. Chicago) and Chihway Chang (Columbia U.), all based in the USA.
The paper proposes an extension of the semi-analytic formalism to weak lensing and thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich (tSZ) fields directly on the full-sky, with an emphasis on higher-order correlations. The overlay is here:

The people who cloned Linux and the (GNU) "shell" around it often worked from samizdat doco about 1970s Unix.In the 1980s and early 1990s, there were a whole bunch of commercial #Unix flavours: #Xenix, HP/UX, #AIX, #SunOS, #Ultrix, OSF/1, AT&T System 3, AT&T System 5, ...
#Illumos, which came from #Solaris, which came from SunOS, is actually still around.
