  1. I had a dead #Psion netBook.

I say "had." It is no longer dead.

There's a fuse on the mainboard of these machines that has a habit of blowing. Researching in conjunction with @heliopolitan, we found a potential replacement. They arrived today, and with my incredibly amateurish soldering skills (and nearly losing half the screws and a nut across the carpet), I now have a working netBook!

  2. Does the #psion5 have a rom version that included the installer program so you can install SIS files direct from CF?
Mine lacks the installer - I can add it via psiwin and serial but it's a pain!
I know the roms are on a daughterboard - are they flash or mask roms?

  7. TIL why no-one ever talks about the Philips smartphone that was an #EPOC32 (pre-Symbian) PDA that slid onto one of their GSM phones - they never actually shipped it.

Given that I had one on my desk when tweaking the web browser for it, I'd just assumed it had been released 🤣 (I was adding support for the new-fangled <frame> tag that had just arrived in HTML, after the Series 5 browser had shipped)

  8. Some #Psion news! #plptools, the open source suite of programs for transferring files to and from #EPOC16 and #EPOC32 devices, has some additional maintainers: @captfab, @jbmorley ... and me!

We're looking into how we can take the project into the future. We do have some ideas, but we're taking a considered approach to future development.

plptools currently runs on Linux and macOS (and possibly FreeBSD, NetBSD, Solaris, AIX and HP-UX, although these haven't been tested in a while). I've started work on porting it to #HaikuOS.

The repo has been moved to a new GitHub organisation, which you can find here. github.com/plptools/plptools

  13. I originally thought that it was just a hardware thing - solder on another chip, job done. After all, the pads were on the board, so why wouldn't #Psion have made #EPOC16 work with 4MB RAM?

But maybe a 4MB 3mx just wasn't a priority for Psion any more. #EPOC32 and the Series 5 were in full swing by the time the 3mx was released. The two Psions were drifting apart, too - Psion's hardware business ended up refocusing on Windows CE machines.

Psion had the ramdrive working with 2MB machines since the 3a2. The code probably hadn't been touched in ages, and it might have been too much hassle to update for the returns they thought they might get.

This is all speculation, of course. But it would make sense.

  18. @jbmorley FrotzS5 -- a z-machine interpreter for text-adventures / interactive fiction. The keyboard is excellent and there's many hundreds of games available and still being produced yearly

  19. Waah, my #scheme program is too big to run in the small model on #EPOC16!

    😭😭😭

So switching to (real mode) #MSDOS and the large memory model. Or #EPOC32?

  20. Spent a lot of time this morning looking for old #EPOC32 software.

Most of my #Psion time is spent in the #EPOC16 world, so it's been good to look around at what was done on the newer machines.

Highlights so far include #SimCity, Frotz (#Infocom emulator), Jumpy, #NetHack, a WAP browser, Imperium (Command & Conquer clone), Z80 (#ZXSpectrum emulator) and #Doom!

I need to dig my 5mx out, but I'll be giving these a go.

Hi, I have installed "Vim.SIS" on my Psion Series 5 and it works. I didn't do much, just created a small text file, saved it and quit.

  22. I knew that there was a version of #Vi (Elvis) for #EPOC16, but someone actually managed to port #Emacs to #EPOC32!

Unfortunately the download link is dead. Still, nice work!

  24. I finally released my little goodie for all #Psion #Epoc32 fans out there:
i took the WindRm code and modded it a little bit to get a version for desktop linux without hardcoded touch UI and saving state on close.
It's really alpha code but works nicely for demonstation. get it here (you need a working psion rom; sys$rom.bin):

  25. Some hacking on #WindEmu (#Epoc32 / #Psion 5 MX emulator, WindRm version) today to make it useable on normal linux tablets...
