Catch of the Day: The Jurassic Park Workstation! 🦖🖥️

Hey Retro Fans!

Hold on to your UNIX manuals, because today our FrogFind radar detected an absolute Hollywood star in the frog pond. Between the usual handhelds and Windows PCs, this breathtaking identifier suddenly appeared:

Netscape Navigator 4.75C-SGI on SGI IRIX!

For those who weren't in IT in the 90s: SGI stands for Silicon Graphics Inc. and IRIX was their proprietary UNIX operating system. SGI workstations (like the legendary Indigo2 or O2) were incredibly expensive, highly specialized graphics monsters. It was on exactly these machines that the dinosaurs for Jurassic Park, the liquid Terminator in T2, and even the hardware architecture for the Nintendo 64 were developed!

The fact that these Hollywood heavyweights came with their own specially customized version of the Netscape Navigator (the "C-SGI" at the end) straight from the manufacturer was standard back then. The fact that today, over 25 years later, a retro enthusiast boots up one of these UNIX legends, loads the IRIX OS, and surfs through our frog pond using the original SGI Netscape is retro computing at the absolute highest level.

FWIW, I've mostly retracted from the #irix communit(y/ies) since nekoware went under, and haven't done that much in that area of late. But there's some folks active on the fediverse that do things a lot more interesting than anything I've done :) @flexion comes to mind.

In the 90's if you got a computer it would had been a PC-DOS or a home computer (Amiga or such), Unix outside some places like universities was rare to find.

And speaking of "dinosaurs"... the underlying system is truly Unix (or better, the Irix variant): what is seen it's a SGI workstation running the filesystem navigator FSN. ;)

Found an interesting story about the origin of the SGI logo while reading IRIS Universe, Spring 1987 issue..

Puzzle artist Scott Kim designed the Silicon Graphics logo entirely using JAM, a pre-PostScript language from Xerox. He started with a cube, looped a continuous tube around its vertices, rounded the corners, then rotated it so the 2D projection reads as both a hexagonal flower and a 3D object.

WipeOut finally starts and renders on #IRIX Had to eliminate shaders, fix some memory alignment and other big endian issues. No textures yet. Still WIP.

Another day, another 30 year old computer getting in on the IPv6 action. This time it's an SGI O2 running IRIX 6.5.

It only took me a few hours to setup a network installation server for the software and remember how to use inst and find the right systune but hey, now we're golden. :sgi:​

#plptools update!

Haiku

The #HaikuOS port is now mostly working, with caveats. Everything compiles except plpfuse, which might require migrating plpfuse to FUSE3. I've been able to send and receive files using plpftp, but RS232 DSR checking has to be disabled in the code. I don't want to speak too soon as it could very well be my mistake, but there might be a bug in Haiku's implementation of ioctl() for serial ports. Stay tuned...

FreeBSD

The #FreeBSD port currently has issues with linking to readline, but I'm sure that's fixable. However, a different issue has come up involving FreeBSD's implementation of the timezone global variable. This, in turn, might have uncovered some very old, slightly iffy code when working out timezone offsets.

Other platforms

The #macOS port is running fine at the moment, thanks to @captfab and @jbmorley's sterling work. If you're on macOS, check out Reconnect.

I'd like to resurrect the #NetBSD port for a few reasons, not least because you can still run the current release of NetBSD on a Series 5. I have no experience with NetBSD, so that's my challenge for this afternoon.

There are indications that plptools has at some point worked on #HPUX, #IRIX and #AIX. I personally feel that these ports probably don't need to be resurrected.

The code also mentions #Solaris - I'd certainly consider working on an #IllumOS port, if people were interested.

Interestingly, there's no mention of #OpenBSD, but again I would consider working on that if people are interested.

This is very much a *NIX/POSIX suite of tools. A Windows port isn't going to happen any time soon, unless someone wants to try building it using cygwin. I'm not saying it will never happen, but it's not a priority.

Misc

A couple of small bugs have been squashed by Reuben, including an issue where logging didn't go to stdout when using the --autoexit switch.
