I remember Xenix back when I was in high school. I had a copy lying around but there was so much dev activity on DOS then Windows that it was relegated to the pile of ignored OSs.
✅ Microsoft's Xenix - by John Paul Wohlscheid

Turned out the patch might not be needed on my Xenix 1.00 disks. Tried stepping through install. Went as hoped (with a few glitches) until finally it asked to boot from the HDD. Then, oops. No /boot for me!
Well, I also stuffed up the time zone (I don't live in the US and messed up setting the "Other" timezone), so I get to blow away that massive 20 MB Type 2 HDD and try again with knowledge now earned and learned.

Playing around with Xenix. Managed to get 2.0 running in PCem, albeit now I need to do a bit of reading to learn how to configure it and use it.
I'd like to take a swing at Xenix 1.0, but looks like I need to patch Install and another disk before it will work in PCem. I have the patch, but it needs Python 2.x, so either I rewrite it for 3.x, or I revive my 10-years-dead 2.7.6 environment.
This one is part of my self-learning-how-to-Linux track.

It’s Xenix
While compiling Perl on the Cray I stumbled over the following lines...
Compiling Perl on UNICOS system
It's not Xenix...
Hmm... Looks kind of like an extended USG system, but we'll see...
Congratulations. You aren't running Eunice.
It's not Xenix...
Nor is it Venix...
Use which C compiler? [cc]Well Xe

I've seen a poll about operating systems lately and I think that people should learn one or two things before talking (writing).
Let me clarify you 1, 2 or 3 things:
- #Linux is not an operating system it's just a kernel. Maybe you mean GNU/Linux
- #Mac is not an operating system, it's a computer. Maybe you mean Mac OS or Mac OS X
- #Microsoft is not an operating system, it's a corporation. Maybe you mean #DOS, #Windows or even #Xenix
Ok folks, the class is over. See you next Monday 😎

BLAST!
This is a piece of software for every platform under the sun. The software is an alternative for Zmodem and Kermit for transferring files over a serial link.
Pictured here is the Xenix version I picked up at a thrift store yesterday.

Enjoy: https://fyyd.de/episode/12526958 #vintagecomputing #xenix #unix #podcast

@jbz
I actually had a copy of XENIX 286 at my old job ages ago.
Was a very nice system for what you got, the printed docs were very good. I wish I could have kept it, but I doubt it was Y2000 compliance. -

SCO UNIX 🐧 emerged as the heir to Santa Cruz Operation's adaptation of Microsoft Xenix, 🚀 blending UNIX System V Release 3.2 with Xenix's device drivers and utilities. 🛠️ Released in 1989, SCO UNIX System V/386 Release 3.2.0 marked the commercial evolution from SCO Xenix.

#Microsoft licensed #UNIX V7 from AT&T in 1978, and sold it under the name “XENIX” (AT&T wouldn't allow "Unix" to be used). Bill Gates' notepad held in the Museum of History and Industry (Seattle) shows the question on #XENIX for Steve Jobs. What was the question remains a mystery

Is #ELKS (8086 linux) still a thing? Would the #book8088 be a good machine for it?
I suspect the #XTCF BIOS wants a DOS4 style partition table so i dunno if the old 8086 UNIXes (#coherent, #xenix, #minix) would cooperate.
Then there's the whole issue of installing such a thing on a machine that doesn't support floppy drives... 😝

@swagpussc (...continued)
Often forgotten by people is the period in between. The people who cloned Linux and the (GNU) "shell" around it often worked from samizdat doco about 1970s Unix.In the 1980s and early 1990s, there were a whole bunch of commercial #Unix flavours: #Xenix, HP/UX, #AIX, #SunOS, #Ultrix, OSF/1, AT&T System 3, AT&T System 5, ...
#Illumos, which came from #Solaris, which came from SunOS, is actually still around.

Since you mention Xenix, here's a couple of interesting historical tidbits:
One of the ironies of history is that #MMDF, which SCO Xenix had instead of #Sendmail, would have been far more popular had it been around just a decade later.
It's also interesting that if one is writing stuff for a virtual terminal on FreeBSD, one still has traces of Xenix around. The keymap(5) file format is much the same as the #Xenix one.
