  10. System76 Meerkat mini Linux PC now available with up to Intel Core Ultra 7 255H Arrow Lake

Linux PC maker System76 has updated its Meerkat line of mini PCs for the second time this year. In January the company launched models powered by Intel Core Ultra Series 1 (Meteor Lake) processor options. Now those are gone. In their place are new Meerkat models with support for up to an Intel Core Ultra 7 255H Arrow Lake processor.

But while the top tier models get a significant speed […]

  11. @system76
I love #LLM, or as they're often called, #AI, especially when used locally. Local models are incredibly effective for enhancing daily tasks like proofreading, checking emails for spelling and grammatical errors, quickly creating image descriptions, transcribing audio to text, or even finding that one quote buried in tons of files that answers a recurring question.

However, if I wanted to be fully transparent to #bigtech, I would use Windows and Android with all the "big brotherly goodness" baked into them. That's why I hope these tools don't connect to third-party servers.

So, my question to you is: Do you propose a privacy-oriented and locally/self-hosted first LLM?

I'm not opposed to the general notion of using AI, and if done locally and open-source, I really think it could enhance the desktop experience. Even the terminal could use some AI integration, especially for spell-checking and syntax-checking those convoluted and long commands. I would love a self-hosted integration of some AI features. 🌟💻

  17. Lilbits: 8 years of updates for (some) Android phones, Dasung’s 60 Hz E Ink display is going global, and more

A handful of Android smartphone makers have committed to offering major OS and security updates for at least seven years after the launch of a new phone. Soon we could see phones with up to eight years of guaranteed updates.

Qualcomm has announced it’s partnered with Google to begin supporting flagship and upper mid-range processors for that long by delivering OS, kernel, and security […]

  18. System76 Meerkat goes Meteor Lake (Linux mini PC spec bump)

The System76 Meerkat is a mini PC that ships with either Ubuntu or Pop!_OS software pre-installed. It’s basically a rebranded version of an Intel or Asus NUC with the System76 logo on the lid, but it stands out from most mini PCs by shipping with a GNU/Linux distribution rather than Windows. The latest model also has a feature that you don’t typically find in a NUC: dual 2.5 GbE LAN […]

  23. System76 Pangolin Linux Laptop now available with Ryzen 9 8945HS and up to 96GB RAM

The System76 Pangolin is a thin, light, and powerful laptop with a big screen, an AMD processor, and a choice of GNU/Linux distributions including Ubuntu and Pop!_OS. Linux PC company System76 has been selling versions of the Pangolin laptop since 2020, and this week the company introduced a new model with an AMD Ryzen 9 8945HS Hawk Point processor and support for up to 96GB of RAM and up to 16TB of storage.

It’s available for purchase now with prices starting at $1299 for a 16GB/500GB configuration.

Earlier this year System76 released a version of the Pangolin laptop with a Ryzen 7 7840U processor, a 16.1 inch display, and 32GB of LPDDR5 memory.

The new model brings a number of improvements. It has a higher-power processor, a higher-resolution display with a faster refresh rate, user-upgradeable memory, a better camera, and a slightly lighter weight. But it’s also a downgrade in at least one area – the new model has a smaller battery than its predecessor. It also has a higher starting price.

Here’s how the latest Pangolin stacks up against its predecessor:

  26. System76 Meerkat Linux mini PC gets a spec bump, still ships with a 2-year-old Intel processor

The System76 Meerkat is a mini PC that’s basically a rebranded Intel/Asus NUC that ships with the System76 logo, comes with a number of memory, storage, and wireless configuration options and offers customers a choice of two Linux-based operating systems Ubuntu or Pop!_OS.

Linux PC company System76 has been selling Meerkat mini PCs since 2015, and the company recently updated the lineup with new models featuring 13th-gen Intel Core processors based on “Raptor Lake” architecture. Prices for the new model start at $549.

The starting price is for a model with an Intel Core i3-1315U processor, 16GB of DDR4-3200 RAM, and a 250GB PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD. But customers can pay more for up to a Core i7-1360P processor, 64GB of RAM, and up to 16TB of storage.

System76 offers a choice of “short” or “tall” models. The short versions has two M.2 slots: one for PCIe Gen 4 storage and another for PCIe Gen 3. Tall models also have a room for a 2.5 inch SATA SSD or hard drive.

The company also offers an option to “disable WiFi + Bluetooth,” but it’s worth noting that this doesn’t affect the price.

This year’s model is a modest spec bump over last year’s model, which came with 12th-gen Intel Core chips. But it still feels a little behind the times: Intel’s Raptor Lake chips first launched in early 2023 and the chip maker has launched two new generations of processors since then: Meteor Lake and Lunar Lake.

While Intel has highlighted the AI capabilities of those new chips, which are the company’s first to include neural processing units (NPU) for hardware-accelerated AI, the newer chips also bring CPU, graphics, and efficiency improvements that make it unusual to see a brand new mini PC in late 2024 that features a 13th-gen processor instead of one of the newer chips.

The mini PC’s other features include support for up to four displays (thanks to two HDMI 2.1 ports and two Thunderbolt 4 ports, a 2.5 GbE Ethernet port, support for WiFi 6E and Bluetooth, and three USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A ports and a headphone jack.

    Short models measure 117 x 112 x 37mm (4.6″ x 4.4″ x 1.5″), while the tall model is 54mm (2.1″) high.

  27. Battery life on my #System76 #lemurpro has gotten worse since I switched over to #bluefin -- I'm used to having a very similar time (~6-8 hours) with M1 Macbook Pro's but that isn't the case anymore. I know that with PopOS! but I was able to reach it with Fedora as well. Never used tools like TLP etc. Power Profiles Daemon's performance was very similar to system76's power management.

I'm not sure what's causing this. Battery goes from ~50% to ~10% very quickly.
