@claudius @oldperl @evacide the kernel seems to be behind, yes. At least this is what I see in termux. I am not sure which abstractions it uses, though.

I am generally not a big fan of android and iOS, I am also considering trying #Sailfish or something else #Linux based (preferable with gnome). I'd use another phone for android / banking stuff then. If anyone knows a good source for #UX details where I could get some real impression of how good it would work, that would be awesome.

I'm in the market for a new phone (my current device is a pixel 5 and running well but physically falling apart) and looking for some advice.

Would love to not use #android and considering maybe #sailfish? Based in US with T-Mobile as carrier. What's the best new phone for me?

The one exception to this rosy picture was transferring my SMS store.

I used SSH to login to the #Sailfish device, installed sqlite, and did a dump of the database. I transferred the dump to my PC. I converted the dump from CSV to JSON. Finally, I zipped the file for use by "SMS Import / Export".

I was pleased with myself. Then I realised that the two devices stored the data in different ways. 🙄 For example, the LOS device needs a "thread_id". Bummer!

I might revisit this later.

Moving from #Sailfish back to #LineageOS was fairly pain free.

Installation of LOS was as seamless as ever. The docs are really superb. Motorola provide an online mechanism to unlock the bootloader, which makes life much easier.

Moving my data was straightforward, with one exception. My photos and music were transferred from my SD card. Nextcloud stuff was synced. I don't have my Contacts and Calendar in the Cloud. I make it a policy to use apps which support both import and export.

I sourced this 'phone last year in my frantic search for a device which could run #LineageOS and handle VoLTE on Three. Subsequently, I moved to EE, and got an Xperia to run #Sailfish. This 'phone has been sitting on a shelf ever since.

As the photo shows it is now running LOS. More about that later.

This is the first 'phone I've used that doesn't have a MicroSD slot. Half the 128GB has gone already. :blobsad: No notification LED, either. :blobsad:

Chapter 10 – picking up the ungoogled thread again with Sailfish OS

The screen has a subtle edge curve which helps with the #Jolla gestures. The screen was bright and colours saturated. Everything worked smooth and rapid, but then again the same could mostly be said about my old Sony Xperia 10ii running #Sailfish. I didn’t have the time to do in-depth tests with Android apps.

One thing I noticed was the lack of text prediction/correction. That’s apparently something being looked into (the Xperia build has it).

The new @jolla phone preorder has technically finished with 9837 sold, just short of 10K. However the ordering still seems to work so probably last moments to jump on board with a true alternative to the #smartphone duopoly (they run #Sailfish, a completely different OS developed in Finland).

Can 163 Mastodonians be found to push #Jolla over that huge milestone? :)

Tooting from native #Sailfish app #Tooterß👋 I have to say, I am very suprised. Even as Xperia 10 III is old phone and not top tier when it was published, #SFOS runs super smoothly! I have run to only two bugs, from where only one can be considered bad. 95% of android apps I have tried, work perfectly. Really mature enough to be daily drivable!

- No navigation with live traffic updates (I'll be late for things, but I don't want to install Google-owned Waze on it)
- No WhatsApp (You can't have it on multiple devices
- While I do have Facebook messenger installed, no other notifications from Facebook as it's only available in the browser
- No NFC payments ...
- Ropey GPS
(I don't use tiktok so despite the previous post that isn't a concern)

I was looking at Sailfish OS, which seems nice (and can run Android apps for those things that need it), but it runs on Jolla phones, and those don't ship to Canada. 🇨🇦
