The "about me" for Carbon Brief
"Carbon Brief is a UK-based website covering the latest developments in climate science, climate policy and energy policy.
We specialise in clear, data-driven articles and graphics to help improve the understanding of climate change, both in terms of the science and the policy response.
We publish a wide range of content, including explainers, interviews, analysis and factchecks, as well as a range of popular email newsletters." -
"Google Threat Intelligence Group (GTIG) is tracking BRICKSTORM malware activity, which is being used to maintain persistent access to victim organizations in the United States. Since March 2025, Mandiant Consulting has responded to intrusions across a range of industry verticals, most notably legal services, Software as a Service (SaaS) providers, Business Process Outsourcers (BPOs), and Technology. The value of these targets extends beyond typical espionage missions, potentially providing data to feed development of zero-days and establishing pivot points for broader access to downstream victims.
We attribute this activity to UNC5221 and closely related, suspected China-nexus threat clusters that employ sophisticated capabilities, including the exploitation of zero-day vulnerabilities targeting network appliances. While UNC5221 has been used synonymously with the actor publicly reported as Silk Typhoon, GTIG does not currently consider the two clusters to be the same.
These intrusions are conducted with a particular focus on maintaining long-term stealthy access by deploying backdoors on appliances that do not support traditional endpoint detection and response (EDR) tools. The actor employs methods for lateral movement and data theft that generate minimal to no security telemetry. This, coupled with modifications to the BRICKSTORM backdoor, has enabled them to remain undetected in victim environments for 393 days, on average. Mandiant strongly encourages organizations to reevaluate their threat model for appliances and conduct hunt exercises for this highly evasive actor. We are sharing an updated threat actor lifecycle for BRICKSTORM associated intrusions, along with specific and actionable steps organizations should take to hunt for and protect themselves from this activity."

The biogeographic history of cacao is choc-full of human influence 🍫🌱
A recent study examined cacao’s historical distribution by analyzing published literature, over 15,000 GBIF-mediated occurrence records and remote sensing data with land-use profiles to distinguish native from introduced ranges. 🌎
Researchers found that human activity—not wildlife dispersal—was likely the main driver of cacao's range expansion.

The growing body of research we have been conducting on #TheGrackleProject is showing that #behavioral #flexibility enables birds to #adapt to #human #modified #habitats 🌆 , but plays a smaller role in expanding into new #geographic areas 🗺️
Moving to new towns likely involves more #persistence because we previously found that grackles on the edge of their range in northern California had similar levels of average flexibility (though higher variance), but were more persistent than grackles nearer the center of their range in Arizona https://peercommunityjournal.org/articles/10.24072/pcjournal.320/
This is also supported by the fact that the preliminary data we were able to collect on persistence in boat-tailed grackles (who are not rapidly expanding their geographic range) showed that they are less persistent than great-tailed grackles, while having similar levels of flexibility

Nearly everyone opposes Trump’s plan to kill space traffic control program – Ars Technica

Credit: Kaitlin Castillo / US Space ForceThe Trump administration’s plan to gut the Office of Space Commerce and cancel the government’s first civilian-run space traffic control program is gaining plenty of detractors.
Earlier this week, seven space industry trade groups representing more than 450 companies sent letters to House and Senate leaders urging them to counter the White House’s proposal. A spokesperson for the military’s Space Operations Command, which currently has overall responsibility for space traffic management, said it will “continue to advocate” for a civilian organization to take over the Space Force’s role as orbital traffic cop.
Giveth and taketh away
The White House’s budget request submitted to Congress for fiscal year 2026 would slash the Office of Space Commerce’s budget from $65 million to $10 million and eliminate funding for the Traffic Coordination System for Space (TraCSS). The TraCSS program was established in the Department of Commerce after Trump signed a policy directive in his first term as president to reform how the government supervises the movements of satellites and space debris in orbit.
The Office of Space Commerce, part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, has been around since the 1980s as a licensing agency for remote sensing and Earth observation satellites.
TraCSS is designed as a cloud-based system to serve as a nerve center for collecting satellite tracking data from spacecraft owners and a network of government and commercial telescopes and radars. The space traffic control network then uses the information to provide alerts of potential in-space collisions to satellite operators. This is becoming more important as thousands more satellites head to space each year.
Industry trade groups are lobbying Congress to reverse the Trump administration’s proposal and restore the Office of Space Commerce’s (OSC’s) budget to this year’s level of $65 million.
“One of OSC’s most important functions is to provide space traffic coordination support to US satellite operators, similar to the Federal Aviation Administration’s role in air traffic control for the US airline industry,” seven trade groups wrote in joint letters to Congress.
The trade organizations count the largest Western commercial satellite operators among their members: SpaceX, Amazon, Eutelsat OneWeb, Planet Labs, Iridium, SES, Intelsat, and Spire. These are the companies with the most at stake in the debate over the future of space traffic coordination. Industry sources told Ars that some companies are concerned a catastrophic collision in low-Earth orbit might trigger a wave of burdensome regulations, an outcome they would like to avoid.

Potentially daft question on #FPGA and #VIVADO
I'm trying to see the address that I'm writing to on the LEDs, but I don't.. I *do* see the data though, regardless of what address I write to (provided it is in the range assigned to the BRAM controller).
Do I need some kind of latch to be able to latch the address?

Scalable unsupervised feature selection via weight stability

Abstract: Unsupervised feature selection is critical for improving clustering performance in high-dimensional data, where irrelevant features can obscure meaningful structure. In this work, we introduce the Minkowski weighted $k$-means++, a novel initialisation strategy for the Minkowski Weighted $k$-means. Our initialisation selects centroids probabilistically using feature relevance estimates derived from the data itself. Building on this, we propose two new feature selection algorithms, FS-MWK++, which aggregates feature weights across a range of Minkowski exponents to identify stable and informative features, and SFS-MWK++, a scalable variant based on subsampling. We support our approach with a theoretical guarantee under mild assumptions and extensive experiments showing that our methods consistently outperform existing alternatives. -

The @w3c WebFonts working group now has a fully functional Demo of Incremental Font Transfer which compares IFT to normal font loading with Unicode-range static subsetting. Just click on "next text sample" to see the font being upgraded in real time to support more writing systems and more font variation axes. There is a running total of bytes transferred, you can see that IFT loads much less data.
Both CFF2 and glyf fonts are used in the demo.
