Not necessarily, but +5°C would make human civilization extremely difficult and precarious in many regions. It wouldn't be an automatic extinction event, but it would create conditions of severe hardship, mass migration, resource scarcity, and potential civilizational collapse in some areas.

Erstmals seit 1973 ist 2025 die #Kohlestrom-Erzeugung in #China und #Indien gesunken.

Laut Analyse von #CarbonBrief ging sie in China um 1,6 Prozent, in Indien um drei Prozent zurück. Gleichzeitig wuchs der Ausbau von #Solar- und #Windkraft deutlich.

Da beide Länder zuletzt den Großteil des globalen Emissionsanstiegs prägten, könnte dies den #CO2-Peak näherbringen. Entscheidend bleibt, ob der Trend trotz neuer #Kohlekraftwerke anhält.

Etwa 95% der Länder haben es versäumt, bis zum 10. Februar neue Klimazusagen für 2035 bei den Vereinten Nationen einzureichen, zeigt eine Analyse von #CarbonBrief. Dazu gehören die #EU inkl. #Deutschland. Die Länder, die die Frist verpasst haben, repräsentieren 83% der globalen Emissionen und knapp 80% der Weltwirtschaft.

Nur 10 der 195 Vertragsparteien des Pariser Abkommens haben ihre neuen Emissionsminderungspläne, bekannt als "national festgelegte Beiträge" (Nationally Determined Contributions, #NDC​s), fristgerecht veröffentlicht. Einige vorgelegte Pläne wurden als unzureichend bewertet, darunter auch der der #USA unter der vorherigen Regierung von Joe Biden.

Im Rahmen des Abkommens haben sich Länder verpflichtet, alle fünf Jahre neue Pläne vorzulegen, in denen sie beschreiben, wie sie ihre #Emissionen reduzieren und sich an den #Klimawandel anpassen wollen. Die Länder haben außerdem zugestimmt, alle fünf Jahre eine "globale Bestandsaufnahme" durchzuführen, um ihren Fortschritt bei der Erreichung der Ziele von Paris zu bewerten und entsprechend ihre Bemühungen zu verstärken.

Dieser "Überprüfungs- und Verschärfungsschritt" (review and ratchet) ist entscheidend für die Erreichung der Ziele des Pariser Abkommens. Als das Abkommen vor 10 Jahren verabschiedet wurde, war klar, dass die Länder weit davon entfernt waren, ihre Ziele zu erreichen. Man hoffte, diese Lücke im Laufe der Zeit durch zukünftige politische Maßnahmen und Technologien schließen zu können. Daher erfordert der sogenannte "Verschärfungsmechanismus" (#ratchetmechanism), dass jede Runde der Zusagen weiter geht als die vorherige und die "höchstmögliche Ambition" der Länder widerspiegelt.

Die #COP30 in Brasilien im November wird als entscheidender Moment betrachtet, um die Bemühungen der Länder zur Erreichung der Ziele des Pariser Abkommens zu verstärken. Die ersten beiden Runden der NDCs fanden 2015 und 2020-21 statt. Der 10. Februar 2025 wurde als Deadline für die dritte Runde der NDCs bestätigt, neun Monate vor Beginn der COP30.

Gemäß dem neuesten UN-Emissionslückenbericht sind die Länder größtenteils nicht auf Kurs, die Ziele des Pariser Abkommens zu erreichen, und die Klimazusagen für 2035 müssen einen "quantensprungartigen" Anstieg in der Ambition zeigen, um die Erderwärmung auf 1,5°C zu begrenzen.
