Torino: riapre Meteorlab, il laboratorio sotterraneo del Monte dei Cappuccini per lo studio delle meteoriti

Inaugura oggi, mercoledì 24 settembre 2025, alle ore 11 presso l’Aula Blu del Palazzo del Rettorato di Torino (via Verdi 8/via Po 17) la mostra Le meteoriti e i segreti del Sistema Solare. Dallo spazio al Laboratorio sotto il Monte dei Cappuccini (METEORLAB), organizzata in occasione della riapertura del Laboratorio che verrà dedicato ai fisici Carlo Castagnoli e Giuliana Cini.
Nato negli anni Sessanta su iniziativa di Carlo Castagnoli e diretto fino al 2005 da Giuliana Cini con la collaborazione di Giuseppe Bonino e Alberto Romero, il Laboratorio dei Cappuccini (ora METEORLAB) è stato il primo centro di ricerca sotterraneo in Italia. Realizzato a 30 metri di profondità all’interno di un ex rifugio antiaereo ricavato nel 1943 sotto il Monte dei Cappuccini, ha ospitato esperimenti pionieristici di fisica cosmica ed è diventato un punto di riferimento internazionale per lo studio delle meteoriti e della paleoclimatologia.
L’inaugurazione si terrà alla presenza del Rettore dell’Università di Torino, Stefano Geuna, della responsabile scientifica del laboratorio Carla Taricco (Dipartimento di Fisica, Università di Torino) e del M° Giulio Castagnoli (Conservatorio “G. Verdi” di Torino).
La mostra costruisce un percorso che accompagna il visitatore alla scoperta delle varie interpretazioni storiche di queste ‘pietre cadute dal cielo’, delle caratteristiche che le differenziano dalle rocce terrestri, dei grandi impatti avvenuti, sottolineando il loro ruolo di testimoni del passato. Gli asteroidi, da cui le meteoriti provengono, conservano infatti memoria della composizione originaria del Sistema Solare e ciò li rende fonti di informazioni preziose e uniche sulla sua formazione e sull’origine della vita. Il percorso illustra inoltre le particolari ricerche condotte dal METEORLAB basate sulle meteoriti falls (viste cadere) che permettono di ottenere informazioni sull’attività del Sole nei secoli passati.
Presso il METEORLAB è allestito anche un percorso di visita che amplia gli argomenti trattati nella mostra in Rettorato e approfondisce la storia dei rifugi antiaerei di Torino, in particolare di quello dei Cappuccini illustrata con riproduzioni di foto e documenti d’epoca. Grazie al supporto dell’Università di Torino, della Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo e in collaborazione con Infini.to (Planetario di Torino e Museo dell’Astronomia e dello Spazio “Attilio Ferrari”) il percorso verrà aperto alle scuole primarie e secondarie a partire dall’anno scolastico in corso e, in giornate dedicate, anche al pubblico che si potrà iscrivere sul sito del METEORLAB.
Il 24 settembre, dopo l’inaugurazione, sarà inoltre possibile prenotare una visita guidata al Laboratorio e al rifugio antiaereo che si svolgerà a partire delle ore 14.

Allenare le descrizioni
Questo mese la mia coach di scrittura mi ha dato un compito.
Al mio lamentarmi che faccio fatica con le descrizioni mi ha chiesto: “Hai mai fatto l’esercizio di descrivere il mondo intorno a te?”. È dai tempi della psicoterapia che non lo faccio. Era un esercizio per allenare quella che oggi viene chiamata mindfulness, ma che la mia terapista chiamava essere presente. Si tratta di mettersi in un luogo e osservare attentamente tutto quello che ci circonda per poi trasporlo su carta. E ho scoperto che è un esercizio molto utile per allenare le descrizioni. Show, don’t tell: devi mostrare e quindi devi descrivere.
Come sempre, quando un tema mi prende poi trovo esempi e approfondimenti ovunque.
In queste settimane sono rimasta molto colpita dalle descrizioni nei racconti di Caitlín R. Kiernan, come per esempio:
Il vento frusta l’erba, la frusta in onde alte e la attraversa rapidamente allo stesso modo in cui frusta il mare, e Tara guarda la casa mentre la casa la guarda.

Oppure ancora:
Ma Frank non era scappato, e quando aveva premuto il viso sulla crepa nel muro, aveva visto i campi che si estendevano per chilometri e chilometri, prati cremisi sotto un cielo del colore giallo-verde come un vecchio livido. Gli alberi bianchi si contorcevano e frusciavano nella brezza soffocante e speziata, e molto molto lontano, l’enorme cosa nera camminava lentamente attraverso l’erba sulle gambe storte e lunghe come trampoli.

Ho trovato anche molto utile i concetti che Chuck Palahniuk dedica alle descrizioni. Come per esempio questo:
Invece di scrivere di un personaggio, scrivi dall’interno di quel personaggio. Ciò significa che il modo in cui descrive il mondo deve riflettere le sue esperienze. Io e te, nei nostri rispettivi ruoli, non entriamo mai nella stessa stanza. Ognuno di noi la vede attraverso la lente della propria vita. Un idraulico entra in una stanza molto diversa rispetto a un imbianchino.

Ma quindi, questo esercizio? L’ho fatto. Qui vi lascio le mie impressioni di una passeggiata nel bosco. Mi sono seduta su una panchina e mi sono fatta attraversare dalle sensazioni.
La primavera si sta avvicinando. Lo sento. Lo vedo. Tracce di colore tra il fogliame secco e smorto. Ciuffi di giallo e verde: le primule. Quello spruzzo di viola: vinche. E poi il canto degli uccelli che, dopo il silenzio dell’inverno, si fa assordante prima dell’alba.
Stare nel bosco: lontano il rombo del traffico. L’urlo di una motosega. I tronchi si ergono brulli, nudi. I rami grigi si stagliano contro il cielo di un azzurro troppo intenso per essere febbraio. Il vento fa vibrare le foglie delle palme nel sottobosco. Non ci dovrebbero nemmeno essere, le palme. Specie invasiva la chiamano.
Le ombre dei rami ondeggiano sul tetto diroccato della Cà del Pastour. Il trillo acuto di un uccello, mi dispiace non essere capace di riconoscerne la specie. Le piante le riconosco dalle foglie secche che sono cadute alla base dei loro tronchi. Quercia, castagno, pioppo, carpino. E poi agrifoglio e pungitopo sempreverdi punteggiano il sottobosco, oltre a qualche cespuglio di lauroceraso sfuggito dalle siepi dell’abitato. Ancora la motosega che urla lontana. Fa caldo, un caldo anomalo, ormai lo so, lo sappiamo. Qualche imenottero si fa ingannare ed esce alla ricerca di nettare.
Mentre invece l’altro giorno sono andata in biblioteca perché avevo bisogno di uno spazio neutro per riordinare alcuni miei pensieri.
L’ambiente, tutto calcestruzzo e linoleum color giallo uovo, fa rimbombare le voci. Lezioni di portoghese miste alle proteste dei bambini. Accanto a me due ragazzi: uno aiuta l’altro ad adattare il suo italiano alle usanze locali. I volontari al banco dei prestiti fanno capannello, il tono della conversazione sembra divertito. Il signore di fronte a me ha con sé un sacchetto di plastica pieno di cibo. Ha preso una pila di quotidiani e legge e mangia e legge e mangia. È un tortino agli spinaci quello? Ora ho fame anch’io. È passato alla pizzetta, di quelle da supermercato con il formaggio un po’ bruciato. Sento la vocina robotica del distributore di bevande calde, il rumore brusco dell’erogazione. Il signore di fronte è passato al dolce, una brioche con le gocce di cioccolato. Tifo per lui.
