On Friday I watched a Little Grebe busily finding food (mostly Mayflies) for the last of his chicks. Frustratingly, the little Little Grebe was spending most of his or her time on the far side of the pool. Eventually a closer approach was made and I managed to capture the food pass on camera a few times.

Little grebes are the smallest European grebes with a body length of about 25 cm (which also includes the great crested grebe). They are rather rare.

Crested Grebe with chicks.

If I remember correctly, when I was growing up, grebes in the Amsterdam canals would court, breed and raise their chicks in spring. Now I see them with chicks almost year round. I’m not sure if it’s climate change, or an adaptation to city life where food is abundant and predators are largely absent. Or perhaps it has always been like that and I misremember.

I’m not sure if this behavior is common in other bird species, but grooming grebes, like this Great Crested Grebe in Amsterdam, feed small loose feathers to their young. I’ve photographed Pied-Billed Grebes do the same in the US. In both species the young start begging for the feathers when they notice one of their parents is grooming.
