One of the things that's cool about these early #Etruscan abecedaria (here's another one) is that they use both Ϻ (from North #Semitic 𐤑 ṣ) and Σ (from 𐤔 š). As far as I know, #Greek abecedaria pick one or the other and put it in between Ρ and Τ regardless of which one it is.

Most western linguistics scholars know that Hebrew is a #Semitic language just like #Arabic. But they analyze it as if it is an IndoEuropean language in which each word is a stack of roots and each root represents a simple concept. A word is a compound concept that is the combination of these single concepts.

However, a #Hebrew letter is really an action/event concept and represents the complete sound of the concept (consonant+vowel), like a Chinese character, originally being a pictograph.

In the answer to the question "When is someone a #Semitic person?", one can read "#settler" and "#colonist" in the answer. Why do you find these two words in the answer?

However, since the ethical values of the lawgiver rarely—if ever—surface in the text itself, it hasn't proven easy to grasp with traditional, #exegetical methods. This study offers a novel approach to mapping out the ethos of an ancient law text like #Leviticus 17–26.

Anyway, as you likely know, lunisolar calendars have to add an extra month every few years to keep them in sync with the sun. Sumerian and #Semitic calendars add the extra month at the same position whenever necessary, but the #ChineseCalendar is much more complicated (though in some ways it makes sense). Let me explain.

TIL that the Punic surname “Barca”, as in the Carthaginian general Hannibal Barca (as well as his father Hamilcar, and brothers Hasdrubal and Mago), is Phoenician for “lightning”. I don’t know how I never made the connection before, given that Phoenician is Semitic and I speak Hebrew (where the same √brq root is also used to mean “lightning”). I guess my brain is just in full on Latin Mode or something when I’m thinking of ancient Rome? Anyway - Hannibal “Lightning” Barca! ⚡️
