The Power Hour
When I have something that I need to do consistently, I break it into a small chunk and make sure that I do that thing every day first thing in the morning. Like...early early. Early enough that most people around me are sleeping. For me, that's 6AM. With some Canadian institutions implementing transphobic policies to appease the US, my worry is that the federal and provincial governments in provinces that haven't already been doing so will start doing this as well, especially if they think it will help with trade negotiations.

Wir hatten immer Probleme die Handys im VW T4 beim langen Stehen auf Stellplätzen zu laden.
Heute habe ich eine 12 Volt Steckdose und ein USB Ladegerät eingebaut, versteckt unten hinter dem Fahrersitz. Die Stromversorgung läuft über die Zweitbatterie (unter dem Fahrersitz). Um das System abzusichern, habe ich einen kleinen Sicherungskasten genommen. Die Steckdose ist dauerhaft mit 15 Ampere abgesichert. Das USB Ladegerät wird über einen eigenen Schalter bedient und ist separat mit 5 Ampere gesichert. Das Verlegen und Crimpen der Kabel war eine kleine Herausforderung, wenn man vorher nur PV-Anlagen gecrimpt hat - Fummelarbeit!
Nachdem der Stromkreis erfolgreich getestet war, habe ich die freiliegenden Kontakte am Sicherungskasten isoliert und den Kasten mit Kabelbindern fixiert. Einem Kurzschluss durch Vibrationen ist damit vorgebeugt.
Die nächste Reise kann kommen!

Parenting kids often requires tricky compromises. When his friends started getting gaming consoles, we wanted to give our son the same opportunity so he wouldn't feel left out. However, we have a small apartment, no TV, and I wasn't keen on buying hot, loud hardware or getting locked into walled gardens. Working in sustainability sciences, I also try to avoid unnecessary resource consumption. I wanted to see if I could build a viable alternative to buying a dedicated console.
I ended up buying a used 4U Supermicro server on eBay (I lucked out and broke even by selling the included Tesla V100S GPU) and installed a 24GB RTX 4000 Blackwell. This machine sits 130km away, running on remote PV-solar power. I set up a cloaked Windows 11 VM with GPU passthrough, streaming via Sunshine over a rock-solid IPsec (IKEv2) tunnel.
For his device, I rescued an old 2017 Galaxy Tab S3. I flashed a clean ROM, set up TimeLimit via F-Droid (allowing 30 mins/day, 2 hrs on weekends), and attached a GameSir G8 controller.
I also wanted him to be somewhat independent, so I created a simple Home Assistant dashboard. When he wants to play, he taps a single button that sends an IPMI Redfish command to boot the remote server. A minute later, he opens Moonlight and is playing Forza Horizon 5 fluidly. A 2024 game running flawlessly on a 9-year-old tablet!
The flexibility is absolutely great. Whether we are traveling with an old laptop, using my Pixel phone (greetings #Graphene), or visiting his grandmother's TV, the setup just works. Best of all, I only have one central OS to maintain. The Xeon CPU has 72 cores and barely hits 9% usage during gameplay, so I'm planning to add a second GPU to share the server with a friend's family.
I am aware that having the technical capacity to build this is a unique privilege. I still wanted to share this to show that alternatives to constant hardware consumption exist. By pooling resources and reusing old tech, we can escape walled gardens without sacrificing the experience.

We’re rethinking the conference #Hackathon format by launching a HaCLAthon (C=Collaborative, L=Long-term, A=Asynchronous) [1] for the #IOER 2026 conference. [2]
The goal is a living #JupyterBook that becomes a citable publication with a DOI. Here is the stack I built to make it actually work:
1. The Problem: Jupyter Notebooks are great for #DataScience, but a difficult for collaborative #Git diffs and non-technical domain experts. Solution: We use #Jupytext to maintain a bidirectional sync between .ipynb (for code) and .md (for text stories).
2. The Problem: Inviting external contributions usually means a security/privacy black box if you use 3rd-party CMS brokers to link into Github/Gitlabs. Solution: I deployed a self-hosted #Golang OAuth broker to handle the GitHub handshake on our servers as a microsservice. 100% #DSGVO compliant and sovereign. [3]
3. The Problem: We want domain experts to write, but we don't want to force them to learn Git. Solution: Integrated a browser-based visual editor (#DecapCMS/#SveltiaCMS). Edits enter a Kanban-style editorial workflow as PRs. We review/merge on Github, and our #GitLab CI/CD builds the book.
4. The Result: Developers get #Jupyter4NFDI or local #Docker environments. Writers get a WYSIWYG browser editor. Everyone gets listed as an author on a persistent scientific artifact.
Documentation is also about building inclusive pipelines!

La lune est un satellite de la Terre. L'attraction lunaire est plus faible que l'attraction terrestre, ce qui permet aux astronautes et aux lapins lunaire de bondir plus loin avec moins d'efforts.
Un jour, un terrien eu une idée fabuleuse pour exploiter cette attraction.--
- Lancer des satellites depuis la Terre, c'est trop contraignant. Il faut une masse de 780 tonnes pour envoyer en orbite un paquet d'une dizaine de tonnes. Le ratio est trop mauvais. Utilisons une catapulte sur la Lune pour les lancer avec beaucoup moins d'efforts. De plus, en l'absence d'atmosphère, pas de frottements.
Une décennie plus tard.
- Le lancement est fiable, et on a pu contruire une usine d'assemblage et de construction d'éléments satellites suite aux découvertes de gisements de métaux et terres rares. Envoyer les satellites construits sur Terre vers la Lune pour les mettre en orbite autour de la terre n'est plus nécessaire. Et vu que tout est confié aux IA, plus besoins d'humains sur la Lune. Les lapins seront tranquille, parce qu'il n'y aura plus de saison de chasse.
Quelques années plus tard, des satellites sont lancés un peu partout, dans toutes les directions. Les IA étant aux commandes et ne reçevant plus d'ordre des humains fonctionnaient en toute autonomie. Minage, extraction des ressources, fonte, assemblage… tout était automatisé par l'IA. Néanmoins, le remplissage en ergols était difficile, et un tirage au sort devait être fait systématiquement (avec perte d'une unité robotique une fois sur quatre).
Un satellite fut envoyé dans une certaine direction… et entra en collision avec un vaisseau croiseur venant de la constellation du Taureau.
Croyant en une attaque délibérée, le capitaine de ce vaisseau demanda l'analyse des vecteurs pour déterminer l'origine de l'attaque. La Lune fut rapidement désignée.
Voyant une activité robotique autonome, le capitaine eut peur, et croyant voir une unité de Répliquants s'étant déployés sur ce satellite naturel, ordonna sa destruction.
Quelques missiles à fusion nucléaire furent envoyés, et détonnèrent.
Et la Lune éclata !
Quel rapport avec Et la Terre Éclata ?
Et bien, rapidement, l'absence de l'attraction lunaire se fit sentir rapidement avec l'arrêt des marées. Mais c'est au bout d'une semaine où les fragments lunaires frappèrent la Terre.

I started watching Murderbot, the TV adaptation of Martha Wells' "The murderbot diaries". Well, the first season is all focused on the first novel, "All systems red" and I was extra skeptical, especially since the huge disappointment in the Silo TV show, but I must say that this show clicks all the right buttons
I've already seen the main actor in another role that I quite enjoyed but for the life of me I can't remember where and when.
Anyhoo, if you liked the books or if you're looking for a mid-light hearted show, this one is highly suggested

Coming back to this, yesterday we had a lot of fun mostly attaching Nobelisks to unaware people and blowing stuff up and building a new base of operation in the forest biome (we started in the grass area) but then we discovered a new bug from the experimental branch: deleting trains, punctually the locomotive, will crash your game.
Seems like it's something added in the latest update (see here for another report ) so I advise all of you fellow FICSIT properties to be wary of deleting locomotives for the time being.
Oh, and if you might be interested in playing with us in our dedicated server, give us a ping in TGT self-hosted Discourse instance, FICSIT is always interested in new workers joining their ranks!

Kudos to @galaxis. There is an option to disable timelines for non-authenticated users, which also disables remote hashtag access.
