  1. Can #Science prove the absence of #God? 🧠🌌

If #neuroscientists can use an #MRI to pinpoint the exact moment when we sense something “divine”—is #God then just a chemical reaction in the temporal lobe? Or have we simply discovered the physical antenna for the #immaterial?

  5. “All is change”*…

If all of the parts of a ship are sequentially replaced over time, is the resulting ship the same ship as the original? (source)

The Wikipedia article on the Ship of Theseus has changed entirely since its inception.

A paradoxical thought experiment made meta: “The Same Boat,” from Greg Ross in his wonderful blog, Futility Closet.

    * Euripedes, Heracles (and others, e.g., Marcus Aurelius, echoing Heraclitus)

    ###

As we contemplate conundra, we might recall that it was on this date in 1971 that the mix was completed on David Bowie’s “Changes,” which had been recorded nine days earlier at Trident Studios in London. Co-produced by Bowie and Ken Scott, it featured Rick Wakeman on piano and the musicians who would later become known as the Spiders from MarsMick RonsonTrevor Bolder and Mick Woodmansey.

“Changes” is widely considered to be one of Bowie’s best songs and has appeared on many best-of lists. His biographers have suggested that the track is a manifesto of his entire career, predicting a constant change of musical styles: the first verse focuses on the compulsive nature of artistic reinvention and distancing oneself from the rock mainstream; the second verse concerns clashes between children and their parents, urging them to allow their children to be themselves as teenagers. Bowie frequently included the song in his live performances; it was the final song he performed on stage before his death in 2016.

    See Bowie perform it here.

You have one year from today before you die, forever and ever, no take-backs. There is indisputable proof that it’s true. You cannot be saved. You cannot escape your fate.

But… you’ll be perfectly healthy right up until the moment you die.

    First Question:

What are you going to do with your year?

I wonder if a sufficiently advanced Alien Civilization could make highly densely packed desired structures of neutrons & play with space-time & gravity.

They could wrap space-time as they want & could make an infinite number of massive structures in space, where gravity is just a toy.

  11. Dinner for Three

If you could have dinner with any fictional character, who would it be? By:SodakArtist There are countless fictional characters I could invite to dinner, but if I only had two empty chairs at the table, they'd belong to Gandalf and Morpheus. Now, before dinner even started, I think I'd already know how the evening was going to unfold. Morpheus would arrive first. Calm. Focused. Always observing. He'd probably scan the room before taking his seat, as if expecting Agents to burst through […]

  13. I recently watched a video of a debt-free, waste-free evovillage... and it really got me thinking: what if we (collectively) move to somewhere like Denmark or Netherlands and setup a ecovillage for Trans or enby critters! There would be no rent or mortgages for our houses. We grow our own food, make our own hormones and is entirely self-sufficent! We don't answer to the outside government.; we would have (optinal) meetings to discuss policies that will be fair to everyone!

  19. The return to the Moon marks more than a technological milestone—it represents a shift in how humanity approaches space.

What begins as exploration may grow into infrastructure, then into industry, and eventually into everyday life.

One hundred years from now, the Moon may no longer be a distant destination, but a place where people live, work, and even take a weekend vacation.

The Moon has always been part of our story.

  23. #ThoughtProvoker 🤔

Emergence. So fascinating, that. I came to some deep insight re: commons organization, a concept I call the Paradox of (commons based) Emergence. Hope to post a forum topic on it soon.

I told so often on the channels that I shouldn't explain so much about SX concepts. That it was a failure condition. And it is. It was also my method to reiterate to myself for testing and improving them against various statements. And to jog my bad memory.

#SX #ThoughtExperiment. #Emergence needs 2 ingredients: Simple building blocks and a set of rules. What if you were the first person to invent chess? For chess you can write them down in a heartbeat. Then though, this first designer / inventor of the game, who thinks it through..

Can they imagine at that time Magnus Carlson level complexity?

  26. While writing my second Beneath Still Stars book, I started thinking about the devices my characters would carry.

The first handheld mobile phone call was made in 1973, using a device that weighed over 2 kg. It wasn’t until the 1990s, with smaller phones and early handheld computers, that personal devices really took shape.

Today, smartphones, watches, and tablets are everywhere. In the near future, I don’t expect dramatic change—just steady improvements.

But looking further ahead, things may shift. Instead of carrying devices, we may wear them. A powerful smartwatch paired with smart glasses or contact lenses could replace the need for a phone entirely.

Imagine walking through a city in 2149, seeing information projected around you, and taking a call by tapping your wrist—no phone required. The future may not replace devices—it may simply make them disappear.

  28. As a 16-year-old baby Queer who didn’t fit in, I’d have been sorely tempted, but as I got older, the impulse would fade. Sitting where I am now, a 59-year-old #Queer who is sure of who I am and where I fit in the world, the magic button to normalcy seems almost cliché.

It’s a small home for my writing projects, including my science fiction novel Beneath Still Stars and my futurism blog In 100 Years, where I explore realistic possibilities for life a century from now.

The site will continue growing as new articles and ideas are added.
