Moose don't use apps, 2026-04-28, 12:00
Enjoy the peaceful forest of Ångermanland and join us on a #thoughtexperiment: Imagine not having a smartphone. How would you communicate with your friends? How would you manage your finances? How would you pay your bus or parking ticket? How would you find your way? Would you survive three weeks offline?
Open for all, no registration needed. Bring a friend!

Emergence. So fascinating, that. I came to some deep insight re: commons organization, a concept I call the Paradox of (commons based) Emergence. Hope to post a forum topic on it soon.
I told so often on the channels that I shouldn't explain so much about SX concepts. That it was a failure condition. And it is. It was also my method to reiterate to myself for testing and improving them against various statements. And to jog my bad memory.
#SX #ThoughtExperiment. #Emergence needs 2 ingredients: Simple building blocks and a set of rules. What if you were the first person to invent chess? For chess you can write them down in a heartbeat. Then though, this first designer / inventor of the game, who thinks it through..
Can they imagine at that time Magnus Carlson level complexity?

While writing my second Beneath Still Stars book, I started thinking about the devices my characters would carry.
The first handheld mobile phone call was made in 1973, using a device that weighed over 2 kg. It wasn’t until the 1990s, with smaller phones and early handheld computers, that personal devices really took shape.
Today, smartphones, watches, and tablets are everywhere. In the near future, I don’t expect dramatic change—just steady improvements.
But looking further ahead, things may shift. Instead of carrying devices, we may wear them. A powerful smartwatch paired with smart glasses or contact lenses could replace the need for a phone entirely.
Imagine walking through a city in 2149, seeing information projected around you, and taking a call by tapping your wrist—no phone required. The future may not replace devices—it may simply make them disappear.

Ooooh...! I just came across this podcast [and many more...]!
#NoBorders, #NoBarriers - #DemandUtopia: A #SolarpunkPodcast
"On this episode of Demand Utopia, host Justine Norton-Kertson talks about the history and purpose of borders, then does a thought experiment imagining what a solarpunk future without borders—with freedom of movement—might look like."

So I had a silly thought.. Could you use a modern day CPU with no extra ram at all today? What about without a hard drive for an OS?
So at the start the OS was on a ROM chip, did that double at the equiv of a bios?
Modern CPUs have more cache than PC's needed of yesteryear. UEFI BIOS are massive in size, and with the existence of Coreboot and its ability to have nearly anything for a payload, linux, seabios, etc you could put a very small OS on there (by today's standards).
I'm sure someone's tried or done something along these lines right?
EDIT: I was thinking just x86_64 CPUs but my examples draw from things like C64/Atari/Amiga/ etc computers too. So any modern cpu today that could run a small OS that lets people just work on stuff. Like with no extra or minimal extra chips for some bare minimum IO

Relativity ...
I believe I understand the usual calculations for time dilation and length contraction using the concepts of an inertial frame of reference and watching a "clock" that consists of light bouncing between two mirrors.
I'm pretty sure I've got that.
So ... are there are similarly elegant thought experiments to show:
* why clocks run slower when they are in a gravity well?
* why clocks run slower when accelerating?
What should I be reading?
Assume I know nothing about tensors, but am happy with complex numbers, calculus, and matrices.

Do you know how fast the Speed of Light is? If there is a hypothetical Train that travels at the speed of light & runs around the Earth's circumference at the equator, then if you are waiting for that train on the platform, it will pass by that platform approximately 7 times in 1 second. 😲🤯

An Impossible Thought Experiment:
"Design a spaceship that carries Humans to a Neutron Star. Land on its surface safely. Drill through it to reach its core and come back safely to Earth. This is a reply to those people who literally say "Nothing is Impossible". Even a Type-VII Alien Civilization can never do it".

#ThoughtExperiment: Many #Worldlets?or in other words, fractions of #World, not the whole World. #TimeTraveler #theories often involve splitting or multiplying #universes … But if we think this through further, its scope might not be quite so universal as it is typically presented …

#WhatIf?: 8 #ThoughtProvoking #Books that Explore the #Possibilities
I’ve compiled a list of eight books — ranging from #novellas to #collections to #novels — that hone in on “what if” and tell a #story in a way that #hovers closely to this #particular #thoughtexperiment.

If the #EverGiven has shown us one thing, then it’s that today’s interconnectedness without buffers can be a huge weakness. It’s also not unthinkable that something like this could be done deliberately with trade wars on the rise. Let’s have #TheITCollapse as a #ThoughtExperiment. No new chips for several years. Your country starts chip production from scratch. But first they do dumpster diving for hardware. What would be your #bedrockOS? Something that scales well from embedded to datacenter!?
