  1. @argv_minus_one Ah, this attitude I find as the problem.

Taking care of the planet and people is part of our nature otherwise it leaves it too open into other people's hands (not your fault but #paradox of life is leaving it to others = #irresponsible).

So without big judgement, if you are not interested in saving the planet even 50% - then that is part of the overall problem.

This then goes back to Trumps Musks running riot because people leave it to others or write off "saving the planet".

  3. #Paradox - the last 500 years scientists have invented lenses to see bigger and smaller things like out into the #solar system and into a #cell. Say the path of lens invention continues, is it likely that scientists might develop even better lenses that reveal more about matter and space, and if this continued, we might see things infinitely tinier than the cell? At least bigger than the Milky Way though. We agree that space might not end anywhere. But what if it goes infinitely smaller as well?

  5. here’s a #paradox to consider: over the last 500 years or so humans have developed lenses that allowed them to see increasingly bigger and smaller things like out into the #solar system and into a #cell. I believe that #infinity exists in both directions. Out into space and into the cell. No lens will be enough to see the end of it or comprehend. no better lenses will be developed because humanity is about to die off. Also, it’s just a paradox.

  6. Ever notice how two things can seem like total opposites, yet both are completely true at the same time? Life loves a good paradox.

    A couple of classic examples:

Light is both a wave and a particle. In physics, depending on how you measure it, light behaves like continuous ripples in water and like tiny individual packets of energy. It threw scientists for a loop, but both are fundamentally true.

You can deeply love someone and also be incredibly annoyed by them. Human emotion isn't a zero-sum game. Holding space for gratitude and frustration simultaneously is just part of the messy human experience.

    Truth isn't always an "either/or"—a lot of the time, it's a "both/and."

  10. The Exhaustion of #Responsibility

    #Humanity suffers from a peculiar #paradox.

We largely agree on many of the world's biggest problems. We know that extreme inequality destabilizes societies. We know that women should live free from violence. We know that climate change threatens ecosystems, economies and ultimately human civilization itself.

Yet knowledge rarely translates into action.

The reason may be surprisingly simple: meaningful change demands effort. It requires people to question habits, surrender privileges, consume less, participate politically and critically examine their own behavior. These are cognitively and emotionally costly activities. Humans tend to avoid such costs whenever possible.

Instead, we prefer narratives that reassure us. We support leaders who promise that difficult problems have painless solutions or that no real changes are necessary at all. Shared self-deception becomes socially acceptable because it reduces feelings of guilt. It is easier to maintain comforting illusions when millions of others do the same.

This contradiction is deeply human. Most people value animal welfare while contributing to industries that harm animals. Most people support environmental protection while maintaining lifestyles that increase emissions. Most people favor democratic principles while investing little time in democratic participation.

The problem is therefore not hypocrisy in the moral sense. It is inertia.

Democracy, social justice and sustainability require continuous engagement. They depend on citizens who are willing to think, learn, vote, organize and sometimes accept personal inconvenience. Freedom itself imposes obligations, and obligations are tiring.

Powerful individuals and institutions possess influence, but their power ultimately depends on public consent, indifference or passivity. Societies are not shaped solely by elites. They are shaped by millions of ordinary decisions made every day.

Human beings are capable of remarkable achievements. We eradicate diseases, build scientific instruments that reach distant planets and create systems of unprecedented cooperation. We are equally capable of ignoring foreseeable risks.

The central question is therefore not whether humanity understands its challenges.

It is whether humanity is willing to accept the discomfort that comes with addressing them.

Knowing what is right has never been enough.

Civilizations are ultimately defined by what they are prepared to do, not by what they merely acknowledge.

  11. > Chinese: wǒ bú huì shuō zhōnɡ wén.
    > Japanese: nihongo ga dekimasen.
    > German: Ich spreche nicht Deutsch.
    > Spanish: No hablo español.

    — A curated list of examples of the liar's paradox adjacent sentence "I do not speak [this language]" by mathematician Joel David Hamkins

Chinese is SVO much like English, so wǒ, huì shuō, zhōnɡ wén are meant to stand for I, speak, Chinese with (不,bú) being the negation of “no/not.”

Indeed, 「我不會說中文。」is the output of Google Translate when you ask for a translation of “I do not speak Chinese.” Personally, I find 中文 easier to write than to communicate orally in isolation. Because Chinese is properly written with a brush, it is not the shape of the letters but the high-dimensional space of brush movements that connects the printed, semi-cursive, and full-cursive forms, so stroke order is vitally important.

Chinese is a pitched language which means the rising and falling of the tone of each syllable is vital to spoken communication. Mandarin here has four main syllabic pitches: high, falling, rising, and falling and then rising. Thus the markers on the vowels are pitch marks, not stress accents.

But there are a lot of different characters. So there are same-tone homophones like 財 (fortune, wealth, assets) and 才 (talents). The right side of the first character resembles the second — not a coincidence, but also not a reliable predictor of pronunciation.

Due to cultural norms, 我愛你。(wǒ ài nǐ, I love you), while a perfectly grammatical sentence is culturally unacceptable to speak aloud to someone in public. Thus in Chinese it is possible to speak something perfectly but also completely wrong. ⇒⇐

Therefore, Chinese does not exist. □

  13. The Paradox of Purpose-Driven Organizations

A lot of work gets redone. Organizations operate in silos, and somewhere along the way, especially the ones who’ve established themselves, they start playing a transactional game.

“What are you bringing to the table? Why should we partner with you?”

And then months later, you see those same organizations posting about the very problems you were trying to collaborate on. Speaking passionately about impact. Sharing why it urgently needs to be addressed. The mission did not change. The politics did.

Here is what I have come to believe after watching this pattern repeat itself. A significant portion of the energy in this space is not going toward solving problems. It is going toward sustaining structures. Keeping the money moving so salaries keep coming. Protecting brand equity. Quietly fighting for credit in rooms where collaboration should be the only agenda.

And I want to be clear, this is not always intentional. Most people in this space genuinely care. But good intentions do not automatically translate into good systems. Organizations, like people, develop survival instincts. And those instincts, left unchecked, can quietly replace the original mission.

This is why I think non-profits and ecosystem enablers need to hold themselves to a different standard. The north star should be to work yourself out of a job. To exist with the sole purpose of ceasing to exist. Success is not your organization growing bigger. Success is the problem going away.

If someone takes your model, your framework, your platform, and creates ten times the impact, that is not a loss. That is the whole point. That is what you should be celebrating.

The hardest part of mission-driven work is not the complexity of the problem you are trying to solve. It is being honest enough to ask whether the structure you have built is still serving the mission, or whether the mission has slowly started serving the structure.

That is a question worth sitting with.

Catholic, conservative, anti-LGBT (though both sell the world a supportive image), and also capitalist (all politicians here own multiple companies and deluxe properties).

  18. The most dangerous threat to a country isn't external.
It's when the majority chooses a comfortable lie
    over an uncomfortable truth.
    British people voted.
    Freely.
For the thing that broke them.
Democracy isn't a protection against bad decisions.
It's just the right to make them.
